the acknowledgments page for a talk by Stephanie Forrest, Santa Fe Institute Research Professor. It included the notion of a negative database, listing the (usually magnitudes-times larger) database of everything *not* in the target db. If you can figure out a way to compress and represent that efficiently, you have an excellent way to allow queries for certain kinds of security information without revealing what you know..... interesting implications.

Artprice puts the Etienne Perrone documentary online: “Artprice or the art market revolution”
This 23-minute documentary in HD format describes the extraordinary human adventure of the birth in France of the world leader in art market information, Artprice, which grew out of a twenty year search for perfection in a global quest to make an Alexandrian library available to the world on Internet. Today Artprice owns 360,000 books, documents and art manuscripts dating back to the 17th century. Referring to the documentary, Thierry Ehrmann said "Film-maker Etienne Perrone has captured the real added-value that Artprice has contributed to Art history. No other company in the world has given itself the objective of standardising the art market". This documentary shows the hundreds of thousands of work-hours by historians and scientists who year after year enrich the largest art market database in the world. Artprice, according to its founder, “is only at 10% of its history”. The film was made in collaboration with the managers and personnel that have constituted Artprice and Groupe Serveur every day since 1987".

georgiamuseum.org/gmoa_blog/russian-art-now-on-view-in-th...
Although the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia has been building a strong collection of Russian art over the past few years, it didn’t have a permanent place to display those works. But in late November 2020, the museum finished reinstalling its Martha Thompson Dinos Gallery to create a lasting space for Russian art. The display consists primarily of objects from the Parker Collection and the Belosselsky-Belozersky Collection, together spanning nearly three centuries of art. It includes portraits, silver, decorative arts, statuettes, icons, medals, coins and more.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPgLPMncvgk
In 2016, now-Parker Curator of Russian Art Dr. Asen Kirin organized an exhibition of works from the Parker Collection titled “Gifts and Prayers: The Romanovs and Their Subjects.” The exhibition focused on the exchange of gifts between the Russian rulers and their subjects as a means of maintaining power. The success of this exhibition attracted the attention of Russian Princess Marina Belosselsky-Belozersky Kasarda. As a result, the exhibition “One Heart, One Way: The Journey of a Princely Art Collection,” which focused on her family’s collection, a donation to the museum, was displayed in 2018 and announced the survival of portraits that had been thought lost as well as the existence of other highly significant works of art.
Despite the absence of a focus on Russian work in previous decades, such projects earned the Georgia Museum of Art a place among the nation’s major centers for Russian art. Each of the collections tells its own story, but Kirin says they unite here to “illustrate how a past society accomplished a certain level of cohesion regardless of dramatic class distinctions.”
Among the most notable objects on display are small items such as military medals and orders. Although miniature in size, they tell audiences a great deal about the shared values of the common people and the aristocracy in Imperial Russia. “The display is by no means an invitation to embrace royalism, but rather an opportunity to examine cultural values. The desire to excel and contribute to the society in which you belong is ultimately a way of overcoming the limitations of mortal existence, as these objects were meant to survive their owners,” said Kirin.
The size and significance of these small objects called for casing that accurately captured their relevance, not a simple task for preparators. They require a case that allows for the secure display of multiple small objects as well as proper lighting, but such a case was not in the museum’s possession. As a solution, the staff thought it best to place a custom vitrine order suited to their needs. Thanks to a generous grant from the Fraser-Parker Foundation of Atlanta, visitors can now find the custom case in the exhibit. To see the small objects, visitors can open three six-foot-wide drawers with motioned activated lighting as well automatic closure upon release.

The Georgia Museum of Art, on the campus of the University of Georgia, in Athens, is both an academic museum and, since 1982, the official art museum of the state of Georgia. The permanent collection consists of American paintings, primarily 19th- and 20th-century; American, European and Asian works on paper; the Samuel H. Kress Study Collection of Italian Renaissance paintings; and growing collections of southern decorative arts and Asian art.
From the time it was opened to the public in 1948 in the basement of the old library on the university’s historic North Campus, the museum has grown consistently both in the size of its collection and in the size of its facilities. Today the museum occupies a contemporary building in the Performing and Visual Arts Complex on the university’s burgeoning east campus. There, 79,000 square feet house nearly 17,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection—a dramatic leap from the core of 100 paintings donated by the museum’s founder, Alfred Heber Holbrook.
Much of the museum’s collection of American paintings was donated by Holbrook in memory of his first wife, Eva Underhill Holbrook. Included in this collection are works by such luminaries as Frank Weston Benson, William Merritt Chase, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Georgia O’Keeffe, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Jacob Lawrence and Theodore Robinson.
In 2011, the museum opened an expanded contemporary building, with additions and renovations designed by Gluckman Mayner Architects, in the Performing and Visual Arts Complex on the university’s burgeoning East Campus. New galleries house the permanent collection, and visitors enjoy an outdoor sculpture garden and expanded lobby. In 2012, Brenda and Larry Thompson donated 100 works of art by African American artists to the collection, mirroring Holbrook’s original gift. They also established an endowment to fund the position of Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art. The Thompsons have continued to give to the museum (their gifts can be found in the collections database), and their gift has had a transformative effect, strongly privileging an expansion of the traditional art historical canon. They received the Patron of the Year award from the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries in 2019.
The museum continues to balance its dual designation as an academic museum with its role as the official state art museum of Georgia. Its schedule is a reflection of the academic study of the history of art and a broader array of popular exhibitions that appeal to all audiences. From the time Alfred Holbrook first loaded works from his art collection in the trunk of his car to share with Georgia’s schoolchildren until today, when the museum staff crisscrosses the state of Georgia to present a variety of educational programs, the Georgia Museum of Art has made the state a richer and more culturally viable place to live.
