Xplore Engineering camp participant Charlotte Rockwell measures the energy needed to counteract the weight of a heavy object on an arm during the Use the Force! Workshop.
At the Use the Force! Workshop camp participants learn that even the simplest everyday actions require your body to generate surprisingly large forces. They explore how biomedical engineers capture data about how our bodies move and what forces they generate – and see how this information helps us to understand and treat different diseases and disabilities of the musculoskeletal system.
Xplore Engineering summer camp is designed for Michigan Engineering alumni and the children in their life entering the 4th through 7th grade. Through a series of experiential workshops, participants get hands-on experience in a variety of engineering disciplines. Participants can choose to participate in 6 out of 18 workshops ranging from nanotechnology to rocketry.

Earlier today, the Guardian's data store released a list showing how much different countries and organizations have pledged to the Haiti eathquake aid effort.
I built a visualization tool to turn these numbers into something real - first, I asked how much money was being spent per citizen of these countries. Then I took that figure and converted it to Avatar minutes: how many minutes of Avatar would this earthquake aid pay for?
Sweden gives up the most Avatar minutes (37 - almost a quarter of the film) while Canada donates just 3 minutes of Avatar time per citizen (which probably wouldn't even make it through the credits).
These images are a screenshot from a tool which allows you to explore the data in detail.

The Millennium Bridge, from the bank of the river Thames.
Despite the EXIF data, this probably wasn't taken with the 24-50mm zoom set to 26mm. The camera and this zoom seem to ignore the actual zoom settings more often than not.
This is one dangerous exposure setting. Manually metered, and pushed about a bit in Adobe Lightroom to bring out just about everything at once. The contrast was flattened out unbelievably, and the shadows brought up a touch, to compensate. The highlight curve linearity was flattened, and the saturation was pushed way up (unusual for me, I usually desaturate almost every shot I take). Lots of other parametric tweaks occurred in Lightroom, too. Don't try this at home (unless you have the river Thames, the Millennium Bridge and the Tate Modern in your living room).

The villa is located in a residential area north of the town of Bernareggio, in the province of Milan, in a typical suburban setting with single family houses. It was designed as the northern header for a series of row houses, also designed by Botta, located on Via Cristoforo Colombo, and the villa rises to height of three stories. On the ground floor, in addition to the entrance, the entire space is completely open onto the garden and it features an indoor swimming pool and connected utilities. The large living room, the kitchen and the master bedroom are on the first floor, and the library, two other bedrooms and bathrooms are located on the second floor. The east facade of the house, set parallel to the street, has a massive appearance with double walls faced with terracotta bricks, designed to keep out noise. This facade features external stairs connecting the garden with the library on the second floor. The convex west facade, which faces the park-garden, curves to form an arc that ends at the northern tip. It is a particularly complex facade, with recessed areas in relation to the eaves, thus creating a broad portico on three floors and deep loggias on the second storey. Two massive binate columns mark the south-west coner of the entrance, alluding to the archtiecture typical of Lombard farmhouses, and they create an indoor-outdoor transition area between the rooms in the villa and park. The use of terracotta brickwork for the entire exterior masonry lends a sense of unity to the architectural form, which is embellished with windows and openings in different shapes: arches, arrows and rectangles.
