Nature's Chaos …
This is from a recent fall trip to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. I always like to keep my eyes open for both wide views, and some intimate portraits of nature, like here, a cross between real and abstract.
Later on the computer, the photo reminded me of my post from last winter about Nature's Chaos, and a book with photographs by Eliot Porter I enjoyed very much:

Road Trip 2013 - Day 3 - June 13 - Iowa
There are many iconic roads in the United States that all experienced a similar sequence of events from the initial efforts to build them through a period of high popularity and fame to an Interstate induced decline. Roads like Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway come to mind. However, these national highways are just the tip of the iceberg. There are other roads with state significance and the White Pole Road is certainly one of them in the state of Iowa ...

This was a very cold morning, right around 0°F. From the previous photo, we're getting really close to sunrise in this one. More clouds filled up the sky, a welcome sight raising the excitement. Will the clouds nicely help or will too many block the horizon? It worked out this time and the sky did not get fully overcast until about an hour after sunrise.

I've seen these on various photo sharing sites, blogs, and other internet places. However, I've never tried to get one of my own, that is until now. Somehow, Bryan Peterson's video finally pushed me over to get the set up ready and do it!
I've pretty much followed what you can see in the video. I have not used a macro lens but rather a 50 mm prime on a 24 mm Kenko extension tube. I also changed my lighting set up. Instead of two flash units from the front left and right I used cross lighting with one from front right and one from back left. I was not sure how it would work with water but under other circumstances I like how the backlight creates a nice rim light around the subject. Here, I was hoping it would highlight the transparent quality of the water droplet.
I also tried both flashes from the back, but that did not provide enough light on the background and the colors were too dark and without saturation, so I moved the right flash back to the front.
I did not use two bowls ... Indoor Photo Project - Water Gone Wild, Vividly and Colorfully Wild

I promised some nature so here's one photo back from June 11, the first day of our 2013 road trip. We managed to get tp Indiana Dunes State Park and Mt. Baldy just in time for sunset, which was a very nice treat after a long first day of driving. We tried to get some miles behind us from the get go to make the days to come easier.

A variation on the previous post for DWH284. What do you think David? And before you ask, no, I do not have one where the post would be right between the ship and the tug, but will have that option stuck in my head for next time :-)
Also, since that may not be apparent, this photo is chronologically before the one posted yesterday even though the ship is more "forward" because it's being pulled backwards but the Washington tug.

Buffalo City Hall is one of those architectural wonders that calls me back often. At sunrise, it's illuminated by the warm rays of the rising sun. However, those rays also cast shadows across the building's face. While that makes the texture of the building stand out, the left wing also casts a shadow across the center of the building. This particular morning there was no sun and no rays. The overcast sky kept the light diffuse, allowing me to capture the building differently, literally in different light.
One thing to note though, even on a day like this the diffused light is still directional ...

Let's change things up a little bit and follow the colorless post with something with plenty of color, something warm. Deceivingly cold in this instance since even that morning, temperatures were far from warm. In this post #4 from that morning, the sun finally found its way through the clouds on the horizon and I really liked the glow on the snow on the frozen lake.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 4 - June 14 - Nebraska
Finally continuing the Road Trip 2013 series and moving on to Day 4 that took us from Iowa to Nebraska.
The road trip has taken us another state westward. Just about half way across Nebraska, in Kearney, this was a wonderful stop to rest and learn something new at the same time. Despite the millions of travelers passing underneath the archway every year, this wonderful museum enjoys only about 50,000 visitors each year. We're all in such a hurry! Don't be like most, slow down, get off the highway, and learn something new. You can rest and eat at the same time and be fresh for the next several hundred miles ahead of you. In my opinion, well worth the stop!

A quick post today, returning to having fun with refractography and playing more with colors. This time, a special Year 2000 champagne glass provided the refractive tool. It really is pretty cool to make these patterns solely out of rays of light right in front of you in a dark room. It's kind of like the old-fashioned photography when images showed up on paper in a darkroom. Only here, no paper and no chemicals.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 5 - June 15 - Colorado
Saturday marked a major milestone on our road trip. After five days on the road we were to make it to our Colorado base near Mesa, CO where we would stay for a week and do trips within its area before starting the return leg of our trip. The Mesa, Colorado base would split our trip into three separate phases: 1) Buffalo, New York to Mesa, Colorado 2) Colorado and Utah exploration 3) Return to Buffalo through a southern route via New Mexico and Texas.
We started the final approach near Denver and quickly found our way to the Rocky Mountains via I-70. We did not want to just jet all the way to Mesa though and had plenty of ideas, too many as it turned out (and that was the common theme each day - there is just so much more to see no matter where you are). Our first stop was in a nice little historic town of Georgetown ... Road Trip: The Continental Divide at Loveland Pass, Colorado.

Is the winter getting too long? I hope not, it's only January and we have two to three more months of it in the hopper. Either way, my mind wandered again today, this time to a warm seaside location.
At times, I get a little frustrated with the number of photographs that are just laying on my hard drive without being printed or even shared online. What's a photo like that good for? Other times, like tonight, this archive provides a great opportunity to visit the places again and pull out one more photograph.
This method has its advantages and that is the test of time. Today, I reviewed my photos from the Coral Cove Park on Juniper Island in Florida and searched for one not previously shown. This one stood out for me thirteen months after capturing it. And you know what, I really would not mind being there right now … Hawaiian Sunrise in Florida.

An early pre-dawn view of the Green Mountains of Vermont. Up the hill of Sterling Mountain, not far from its top, and not far from the more famous Smuggler's Notch. A beautiful morning vista offering a distant view of the layered peaks, peaks disappearing in distance. A view further enhanced by nature's foggy veil filling the valleys.
This one is from archives, a trip still waiting to be processed. Why posting this one now?
The whole train of thought started while watching The Sound of Music, a DVD borrowed from the local library. The original musical that is, the one from 1965 with Julie Andrews, not the recent live version with Carrie Underwoods. Not sure that matters much, but it may. Going back to the roots is what may have started this whole thought. But then again, I am not sure what made us watch the musical again. So in fact, the remake may truly have started this wild wondering of mind.
So anyway, watching the musical and seeing the beautiful landscape scenes from Austrian Alps and knowing a little bit about where the wind took the von Trapp family, made me remember our 2012 visit to the Green Mountains of Vermont and stopping ...

Recycling at its best and getting your heat for free. With a paper log briquette maker and a shredder you can turn your junk mail into a paper briquette that you can burn in your fireplace. FInally some benefit to getting all of that junk. It's not perfect in today's world where most of the paper is fire proof but it works.
It can also be fun. This photograph is a close up of the side of a freshly made paper briquette, still wet keeping the paper bright white. After it dries it turns more yellow and grey. I enjoyed capturing several versions where letters, colors, and shapes caught my eye.

This was the night of the October 2014 partial solar eclipse. I originally wanted to give it a sense of place despite realizing the exposure difference between the sun and the landscape underneath would be huge. I was hoping for silhouette of something recognizable.
That did not work and I had to shoot the eclipse separately. You can reference the album this photo is in. Then, when the sun disappeared behind the horizon along with the moon, I continued to enjoy the marina, Buffalo River, and the sight of Buffalo Main Light across it. This was my last photo of the night. After that, colors and any signs of light quickly faded.

One of my favorite trips to a local beach. Yes, in winter! Isn't that the best time to go anyways? Nobody there and yet the views are out of this world! This evening I visited Woodlawn Beach. It's got a bad reputation for being rather dirty but who cares in winter? It's not like I went for a swim.
Some years, the lake is frozen flat here. This year, it seems winds worked their magic even here, as they usually do at Hamburg Beach and Sturgeon Point. There were my favorite snow volcanoes at the edge of the beach I had to get over to get a view of the lake, the sunset, and the colors later on. It was hard to tell how far to go. Where does the beach end and open lake start?
There was also an unusual amount of drift wood sticking up through the ice and snow. The whole scene looked like a spooky desolate graveyard. Remember Lion King? Elephant Graveyard came to mind.
I usually prefer to go more subtle but here, went for the look you see.

Canyon Lake on the Apache Trail in Arizona. Going back to 2011 in this photo. I must admit I was quite fond of this photo and wanted to include it in full size on my web site but with a two year gap between the original processing and now felt it was not quite right. I guess my taste changed. I chose to go with a stronger red filter now for the B&W conversion thus darkening the sky further and I also backed off on the contrast giving the rocks a wider tonal range.
What do you think?

It's been many photos and many post since the last addition to my aMazing Bookmark collection, so tonight felt like the right time to add one. And it's one from an amazing place, adding another layer to the word play in the word aMazing. It's also the first one in vertical format I have done so far.
It's also a sneak peak into an upcoming post in the 2013 Road Trip series, where the Black Canyon was one of the highlights of our weeklong stay and trips to the vicinity of Mesa, Colorado.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is not one of the most visited national parks neither is it the one that people will mention when you ask them what the next park they want to visit is. In my opinion though, it is an overlooked gem of the national park system and well worth the visit.
From the very first glimpse it offers dramatic views into the deep gorge of the Gunnison River, a river that dramatically drops through the canyon at 34 feet per mile, almost 5 times steeper than the Colorado RIver through the Grand Canyon. The colors of the rocks you will see in this canyon resembles the Rocky Mountains and the Yosemite and King Canyons rather than the nearby red rock country in Utah, and is a wonderful different twist on the natural beauty.
Don't take me wrong, I love the red rocks and could spend weeks exploring Arches, Canyonlands, Colorado National Monument, and other parks not that far from here, but Black Rock Canyon offers something completely different than the desolation of the red rock country. The greens make it feel so much more alive!

Off to the second day in Shenandoah, starting my report with a bit of a natural detail. Many of the trees on the Nature Trail had these swollen bumps on them, clearly not a sign of health. I have not done my research to identify what it was but I did have fun for a little bit trying to frame these tumors in a way that does not immediately reveal what they are, yet looks identifiable once one knows what's in front of them.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 6 - June 16 - Mesa, Colorado
The views were excellent and the clouds floating above the valley were an enjoyable bonus.
After five days on the road and 1924 miles behind us Sunday put a dent in our driving average. The car stayed parked in front of our unit in Powderhorn Resort in Mesa, Colorado all day long and was enjoying a well deserved rest. So were we! Late and lazy start to the day, reading, some games, and a walk around the beautiful grounds was all we could pull off.
Powderhorn is a ski resort sitting right at the chairlift base. And since it is quite ways up the mountain, the Grand Mesa, unlike traditional ski resorts that are located in valleys, the views are beautiful right from the resort, and even better if you walk a little bit up the hill.
The resort's elevation was the first thing we noticed once we got out in the morning and did a little bit of walking around. We were huffing and puffing like we just finished a marathon. It's located at ... Road Trip: The Resting Day at Powderhorn.
And here's the end of Day 6 and its last light. Everything went dark very quickly. I am not sure but think the water in the valley is the Jerry Creek Number 1 Reservoir with Castle Peak behind.

On a winter hike through Emery Park and along its creeks and ravines, trying to see how some of the waterfalls look in winter. While I successfully located couple the slopes were frozen and slippery enough for me not to attempt a descend. I kept strolling through the snow and enjoyed its creaking sounds under my boots in the 15°F temperature. Finally, I reached a point where the ravine was fairly shallow and I was able to explore right around the water for a little bit. I focused on areas where the creek was peeking through the ice and snow cover and tried to capture minimalist view of those. However, one scene stood out for me ...

There are several places around that I like to visit repeatedly and the Eighteen Mile Creek gorge is definitely one of them. While any place will change based on time of day, weather, and season, this gorge does so in a very pronounced way. It does so especially at its very end, where the creek ends and the lake starts, at its mouth into Lake Erie.
There are beaches on both sides of the creek mouth and both change in shape and size dramatically throughout the year under the natural forces of weather and the lake. In winter, the changes take on a different scale. The banks have several feet of piled up ice that can look like the arctic if photographed up close to deceive perspective. Some sections of the creek, where the flow is slower, are completely covered with ice and snow that can collapse when temperatures warm up.
On this night I wanted to capture the monochrome nature of the frozen gorge. The cloud cover was thick and I did not think the sun would show up ...

The 2013/14 winter season seems to have found its true roots! No half baked winter but a winter with solid cold weather for extended periods of time.
It looked promising from the beginning with the first significant snowfall even before Thanksgiving 2013 that allowed the area ski resorts to open. But then it all melted. And then it all repeated one more time in December. However, this winter picked up speed after that moment and did not let go since.
This photograph of winterly landscape on Lake Erie was taken on a Saturday in Small Boat Harbor of Buffalo. Temperatures were barely above 20°F and wind was blowing. It was also slightly snowing creating momentary whiteouts. The lake was clearly pointing at me here calling me out ... The Lake Is Calling You!.
