Road Trip 2013 - Day 6 - June 16 - Mesa, Colorado
After five days on the road and 1924 miles behind us Sunday put a dent in our driving average. The car stayed parked in front of our unit in Powderhorn Resort in Mesa, Colorado all day long and was enjoying a well deserved rest. So were we! Late and lazy start to the day, reading, some games, and a walk around the beautiful grounds was all we could pull off.
Powderhorn is a ski resort sitting right at the chairlift base. And since it is quite ways up the mountain, the Grand Mesa, unlike traditional ski resorts that are located in valleys, the views are beautiful right from the resort, and even better if you walk a little bit up the hill.
The resort's elevation was the first thing we noticed once we got out in the morning and did a little bit of walking around. We were huffing and puffing like we just finished a marathon. It's located at ... Road Trip: The Resting Day at Powderhorn.

A house with a view in Green Mountains, Vermont (VT). The surrounding meadows and distant mountain peaks really provide quite a view no matter what the season and time of the day.
And looking the other way, towards the house, not away, was quite a view too. The gentle rolling hills it sits on top of, the surrounding greenery, and the birch trees I watched it through. A wonderful summer day in the mountains.
Green Mountains are located in Vermont, United States, extending from Massachusetts to Quebec, Canada, and are a part of the Appalachian Mountains. The highest point of Green Mountains and Vermont is Mount Mansfield at 4,395 feet (1,340 m).

A map of the road from Winter to Spring. It's been a solid winter and it's not leaving yet, despite the layer of snow slowly disappearing. I'm hearing we will get some new supply next week though. In the meantime, skiing is still in full swing. Time is changing tomorrow … don't forget to "spring forward"!

This alley in Emery Park looks great any time of the year. Each season has its charms. And different time of day also gives it different look. Here, moments after sunrise, the warm rays were hitting the treetops in the distance while the meadow and the road remained in a shadow. That created a nice contrast between the warm glow and the cold shadows.

Always a Great Pleasure to be Back in Watkins Glen. Mother Nature really did great there! This last visit was in the fall, just a few days back, it was crappy, raining, cold, and close to the closing time and getting dark. All of that 'bad' worked into a great experience in a mostly empty park despite its popularity with the wet rock and wet colorful leaves looking great!
With all of these natural treats that one can point a camera at, how's one supposed to keep up with the computer part of today's photography? My backlog reaches far back, medieval ages most likely. Was film easier to keep up with, or did people have rolls of undeveloped and developed film around that was waiting to be enlarged onto paper?
Back to Watkins Glen, I'm always impressed by the welcome the park provides. An impressive waterfall in a narrow slot right at the entrance!

Sticking with the location for today's post, here's one of the crests at Chimney Bluffs before sunset. As you can see, the sun was hiding but was as curious as I was and had a few peep holes to look down.
One surprise about this visit to the Bluffs was the beach, or the lack of. I remembered a nice size beach from my previous visit and my original plan for this evening was to photograph the cliffs from the beach. There was no beach! Not even a foot, the cliffs went straight to the lake. Surprising? You bet! Not sure what happened, ... Lake tide? The strong wind from the north? I'll have to do some research on that but it was one of those funny moments when you don't even know what to say. We walked down just a few feet to hit the beach trail only to be stopped by an unpassable cliff before we even picked up speed. Everything went according to the plan for about ... 5 seconds :-)

This is a variation on my previous Watkins Glen photo (see comments below). Not only does it skip the lower cascade but the different perspective also gives more weight to the tall upper section. Most importantly though, rather than hiding it, it highlights the interaction between the work of nature and that of men. I also liked the squeeze feel, how both the stairs and the water are pushed in in the middle into a sand clock like shape. Watkins Glen, always fun, always new angles to be found!

Road Trip 2013 - Day 3 - June 13 - Iowa
Back to the June road trip and its Day 3. We were in Madison County, Iowa. That is The Madison County! What do I mean by "The"? Remember Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood), Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep), and most importantly the mean yellow dog?

I love Lake Erie in winter! Unlike most, I rarely venture to the beaches there in summer but I am a frequent visitor in winter. I really enjoy how the vast frozen motionless surface highlights the vastness. However, that is not what you are looking at. What you see here is the view from the beach towards the lake, obstructed by the mounds of ice and snow that the winds from the west create at the southeastern tip of Lake Erie. I like to call them snow volcanoes, like the one on the right here. And yes, they do erupt!

The South End Marina Cargill Pool Elevator begs for attention on the Outer Harbor of Buffalo. It's a pretty dominant structure with a lot of history behind it and it's one of a kind directly on Lake Erie. As such, it works really well with my passion for revisiting locations I photographed before. Some say the first time is the best with the most creativity happening at that time. Maybe. But many times, the satisfaction of capturing something for the first time is not really because the results were the best but simply because as photographers, we finally get those first images. We have something from the location vs. nothing. And many times, planning for time of the year, time of the day, weather, etc., really results in impressive first time results.
I like returning though, over and over. I feel it gives me the opportunity to get more familiar with the subject, with the location, with weather patterns, with light, with everything around ...

These beautiful waterfall veils were photographed in Shenandoah National Park while the colorful fall season was in full swing. The Dark Hollow Falls trail is a gem of a hike! While the waterfall the trail got its name from is definitely beautiful and well worth the hike down and back up, it's the creek one gets to walk along that further elevates the whole experience. There are so many beautiful spots where the water is zigzagging among rocks! And there are so many smaller waterfalls and cascades! What a beautiful location! …
More on the experience in Water Veils in the Fall.

As you approach the edge and catch the first glimpse of the inside you get scared. There's nothing, nothing at all, just a big black nothing. Then the scary moment is over as it pulls you in and reality remains far behind. And then, it all starts happening. All of a sudden photons surround you and start forming these incredible paths in the black space in front of you!
The reality is actually not far from imagination, short of the black hole. But being closed in a dark room … Flying through a Black Hole.
After hours in the dark basement and many tries and tweaks to my props I am finally feeling like I am getting there. I was going to torture you all by showing my gradual improvements one at a time but then decided I appreciated your following too much. So skipping by probably about a hundred, here is what I got to today.
And no, I have not quit landscape photography. It will be back in my stream soon enough!

Admiring, exploring, and working the texture of tree bark. Bark seems to be like human fingerprints - so unique on each tree, with so many variations, and even so different as your eyes move up and down or around the tree trunk. Here, I've enjoyed presenting it in a less ordinary way with a more mysterious, normally unseen abstract look.

After enjoying the Horseshoe Falls and the view west and finally admitting it to myself that there really was not going to be any more color I briefly wandered over to the other side of Goat Island to take a look at the frozen Bridal Veil and American Falls. The ice build up is rather tall and the gorge down below is mostly frozen. Really a wonderful winter view!

In my last post Trouble with Color I talked about reasons I may choose to go with a black and white landscape photograph instead of one in color. Here, I'd like to show another way to deal with some of the same problems. If the wide scene has vastly different components, whether light and shadows or colors, walking closer or zooming in may just be the answer. Isolate a section that can stand on its own, still showcase the same subject, yet, have more consistent light and color … The Details or the Wide and Grand?

With all of the waterfalls in this natural wonder it's easy to focus on those too much and forget about all of the rock around. In this photo, I wanted to focus more on the rock and on the 400-foot deep cut the Glen Creek made through it over the years and have the water pushed into background to complete the scene.
Watkins Glen is wonderful natural creation. A deep narrow glen with a rushing stream and so many cascades a waterfall lover will be in paradise! The glen's origins go back to the ice age when … The Glen.

An international railroad bridge over the Niagara River between Buffalo, New York, United States and Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. It consists of two sections. One is in this photo and takes the railroad between Canada and Squaw Island on the NIagara RIver. The other section to the right connects the island and the mainland over the Black Rock Canal. Both sections have a swing span to facilitate boat passage. The one pictured here on the right side of the bridge is no longer in use. The bridge opened on November 3, 1873.

Ok, after a little detour back on the home front and to presenting what's prevalent behind the window now. It's 0°F and the snow creaks beautifully under one's feet, air is fresh, and it has a little bit of a bite! Here's a photo from Hamburg Beach, a local beach on Lake Erie. See those brown spots? No, that's not dirt (well, that depends on how you look at it), that's a mixture of snow and sand. I really loved the patterns and you have more coming! ;-)

Last year, I decided to photograph all of the underground stations of the Buffalo Subway, or Metro Rail as it is officially called here. No, not an impossible task given the limited scope of that endeavor. There are only eight underground stations on a single line, running under Main Street. These eight stations combined with the six above ground ones create the line between the First Niagara Center (former HSBC Arena, the home of the Sabres) in the south and the South Campus of University at Buffalo in the north.
Since then, I had a few posts based on that photo project: Lines, light, and shadows at Summer - Best in Buffalo (August 2013), Buffalo Subway Collection (September 2013), The Underground Gallery (January 2014).
Along the way, I was building a black and white photo collection from the underground stations and this post marks its completion: Subway - Buffalo Metro Rail Collection.

Lake Erie photographed from the Hamburg Beach a few miles south of Buffalo, NY. I had to walk in a bit and cross a line of snow volcanoes, a snow and ice buildup along the shore. In fact, that is what provided my elevated viewpoint here. While I often try to get low to the ground for a different perspective I intentionally wanted to be higher up here to be able to tilt my camera down, not give much focus to the cloudless sky and show more of the lake surface with the choppy ice and snow in the photograph.
Once past the snow volcano line, the landscape was flat and frozen as far as one could see. That is what I imagine the arctic tundra to look like … Arctic Tundra in Buffalo, NY.

In 2013, my photos went on display in two highly frequented locations. First, the Mall at Greece Ridge in Rochester, NY included two of my photos as huge murals in one of the mall's wings. Later, NFTA included two in the subway of Buffalo. I spent three hours on Saturday hopping station to station trying to find them. I was only successful with one, of the Lower Akron Falls, but found it in three copies at the University, LaSalle, and Summer-Best stations. Here's one from the LaSalle Station with an arriving train.
I must also add that the work of other local photographers definitely brought the subway tunnels to life, most specifically the photos of Terry Cervi and Kristen Roess, with a small contribution from me and Tom Wolf. They're some great inspirational photos and even though this may feel like a strange gallery, go for a ride and stroll around the stations - photos are both along the platforms and in the above ground concourses (of the underground section).
Both Rochester murals are included on my Photo Blog and the subway series is there now too under The Underground Gallery.
*** Spodní akronské vodopády ve stanici LaSalle buffalského metra
V roce 2013 byly moje fotky vystaveny na dvou frekventovaných místech. Nejprve nákupním centru "Mall at Greece Ridge" v Rochesteru zahrnulo dvě jako obrovské nástěnné fototapety.

After a break the Shenandoah trip is back on schedule, continuing with Day #2, and our hike to Dark Hollow Falls. As during Day #1, even here the way down the path was possibly the bigger adventure. So many viewpoints along the creek that one could spend hours at. Also as the day before, family hikes at mid day do not provide the best light for flowing water and waterfalls. I enjoyed it nevertheless!

My favorite spot on Lake Erie at the Mouth of the Eighteen Mile Creek. A place of surprises. The beach moves around and changes shape so drastically that one truly cannot plan much. And water level determines what rocks will and will not show. Heck of a place!

The latest Popular Photography had an interesting article on refractography based on the photographs, hmm, refractographs by Rob Turney. Since I like abstracts I got hooked and had to try. I'm nowhere close to Rob's multicolored beauties but I am slowly getting the hang of it. I figured out how to "focus" without a lens, and set up a workbench where things can stay put for a few seconds. I will certainly need some better object holder. I am sure there are many more to come!

After a bit of a break I'm ready to continue the rod trip with Day 3 that took us across the rest of Iowa> Covered Bridges of Madison County were a must see, as was John Wayne's birth house. Later, White Pole Road was an outstanding classic and a great alternative to the Interstate - a bit of a prelude to our return along Route 66.

Back to October 2013 and to the 2nd day of hiking in the Shenandoah National Park. This is a little further down the Dark Hollow Falls Trail than in the previous post. It was cold on Lake Erie, but it was so much fun! Wind was howling, snow was being blown strongly from the west across the lake and frozen icy surface, but it was so much fun! And the ice was thick as I have not seen it in a long time!
And then you turn around and face the shore to see this colorful show off of a shack as the winds were blowing the snow across the shoreline rocks towards it.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 5 - June 15 - Colorado
Saturday marked a major milestone on our road trip. After five days on the road we were to make it to our Colorado base near Mesa, CO where we would stay for a week and do trips within its area before starting the return leg of our trip. The Mesa, Colorado base would split our trip into three separate phases: 1) Buffalo, New York to Mesa, Colorado 2) Colorado and Utah exploration 3) Return to Buffalo through a southern route via New Mexico and Texas.
We started the final approach near Denver and quickly found our way to the Rocky Mountains via I-70 ...
... From my previous short visit to the Denver area I knew about the great views along US 6 so that was where our next detour from the Interstate led. We were soon rewarded with some beautiful views of the snow capped peaks all around us ... Road Trip: The Continental Divide at Loveland Pass, Colorado.

Skipping along the Dark Hollow Falls trail in Shenandoah National Park, here's the bottom section of that waterfall. I liked using the longer focal length here, well I should say the normal focal length being at 55 mm, but it sure was not the more common wide angle with a near element anchoring the scene and creating depth, as David Muench liked to. Being further from the rocks and the waterfall and zooming in created a bit of depth compression and I really liked it in this scene. It felt like it magnified the interaction between the rocks and water.

A beautiful spring sunrise at the Buffalo History Museum. Despite the date of April 5, the temperature hovered around freezing and I still needed my photo gloves to fully enjoy the morning.
At first, shade and blue tones ruled over the scene. Later, as sun found its way over the horizon and the eastern cloud cover, its first rays hit the top of the museum roof, providing warmer tones. From there on, the look and feel was changing by the second. The light grew stronger, warmer, increasing the contrast and defining the textures of the building, and the branches of the foreground trees. The willow tree branches picked up more and more saturation, and the reds and greens of other trees also picked up additional sparkle. Then, just a few minutes later, the sun overpowered the scene.

A little different twist compared to the previous photo, a little more subtlety this time around!
The beaches of Lake Erie are more captivating to me in winter than in summer. I really like it when the lake is fully frozen and its surface is just a vastness of ice and snow. I also like how the wind pushes the forming ice and snow to the shore and creates mounds of snow resembling volcanoes, only made of snow and ice. I also enjoy looking for close ups screaming winter!
In this photo you can see the collaboration of winter and wind as they spread snow around and shaped it into these beautiful ripples ...Painted by Winter & Wind.

From the road trip a brief detour to the home front. I had to grab some photos of how Main Street looks before cars come back.
Quiet before the Storm on Main Street
It's a multi-photo stitch to provide a wider angle than my 24mm and to be able to keep the proper rectilinear perspective. Stitched using PTGUI.

Taking my photo stream back to Fall 2013, still enjoying the beautiful hike along the creek feeding the Dark Hollow Falls. While sunny days may not be the best light for waterfallers they allow for different photographs. I like the light and shadow play that gets created and looking for areas where the contrast can fit in a single photo. Here, the spotlight was on the old log and I liked the soft background the shaded waterfall behind provided. And yes, the top of the water caught some rays of sun too. Distracting? Complementary? You decide, I ended up liking this scene in front of me.
