A little different twist compared to the previous photo, a little more subtlety this time around!

The beaches of Lake Erie are more captivating to me in winter than in summer. I really like it when the lake is fully frozen and its surface is just a vastness of ice and snow. I also like how the wind pushes the forming ice and snow to the shore and creates mounds of snow resembling volcanoes, only made of snow and ice. I also enjoy looking for close ups screaming winter!

In this photo you can see the collaboration of winter and wind as they spread snow around and shaped it into these beautiful ripples ...Painted by Winter & Wind.

Taking my photo stream back to Fall 2013, still enjoying the beautiful hike along the creek feeding the Dark Hollow Falls. While sunny days may not be the best light for waterfallers they allow for different photographs. I like the light and shadow play that gets created and looking for areas where the contrast can fit in a single photo. Here, the spotlight was on the old log and I liked the soft background the shaded waterfall behind provided. And yes, the top of the water caught some rays of sun too. Distracting? Complementary? You decide, I ended up liking this scene in front of me.

A favorite castle of mine, the Pernštejn castle embodies the medieval feel, at least as I imagine it. t's a fairly large castle, even though not the largest one by any means. It's also one offering a fairly complex structure. I have always admired it for the bridge connecting its main quarters to the complex looking tower too. Pernštejn is also a raw looking castle looking like a medieval castle should, right? The castle also has several authencil looking courtyards finishing its magnificent presence.

The final photo from my mind wandering blog post ...

The whole train of thought started while watching The Sound of Music, a DVD borrowed from the local library. The original musical that is, the one from 1965 with Julie Andrews, not the recent live version with Carrie Underwoods. Not sure that matters much, but it may. Going back to the roots is what may have started this whole thought. But then again, I am not sure what made us watch the musical again. So in fact, the remake may truly have started this wild wondering of mind.

So anyway, watching the musical and seeing the beautiful landscape scenes from Austrian Alps and knowing a little bit about where the wind took the von Trapp family, made me remember ... Sound of Music Induced Moment of Nostalgia

I just had a post featuring the Orchard Park Public Library and so it felt like the right thing to do to show the difference in just a few days. Compliments of a storm that moved in to Western New York from The Gulf, Thanksgiving 2013 is going to be in white in Buffalo and around.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 6 - June 16 - Mesa, Colorado

The views were excellent and the clouds floating above the valley were an enjoyable bonus.

After five days on the road and 1924 miles behind us Sunday put a dent in our driving average. The car stayed parked in front of our unit in Powderhorn Resort in Mesa, Colorado all day long and was enjoying a well deserved rest. So were we! Late and lazy start to the day, reading, some games, and a walk around the beautiful grounds was all we could pull off.

Powderhorn is a ski resort sitting right at the chairlift base. And since it is quite ways up the mountain, the Grand Mesa, unlike traditional ski resorts that are located in valleys, the views are beautiful right from the resort, and even better if you walk a little bit up the hill.

The resort's elevation was the first thing we noticed once we got out in the morning and did a little bit of walking around. We were huffing and puffing like we just finished a marathon. It's located at ... Road Trip: The Resting Day at Powderhorn.

I am still captivated by these photos of light showing up in the air. Yesterday, after couple cold hours spent outside waiting for owls, the basement felt like the best place to be. Another glass, this time a champagne flute from the Year 2000 (remember the Y2K bug?), and a lot of fun again creating this new abstract refractograph!

This photo also marks #9,999 with my D600 and it took me a year and 5 months. I guess not enough time lapse projects!

Being outdoors is the best part of landscape photography for me. Whether it's at sunrise or sunset, day or night, summer or winter, it's always great to be there and witness whatever Mother Nature prepared for the occasion. That sentiment often leads to photos piling up on the hard drive without seeing the light of the day. So, once in a while, processing, printing, posting, sharing, or other forms of presentation are necessary. And not only necessary, it is the essential final step that allows photographers to share their vision with the rest of the world.

As far as post-processing goes, technology is wonderful and allows for things that would otherwise be pretty difficult and expensive. Digital sensors are getting better every year and capture a great deal of dynamic range in noise free high resolution in all kinds of light. And then software in post processing gives you the freedom to take the possibilities even further. HDR allows to further expand the already great dynamic range, focus stacking makes it possible to inject a depth of field otherwise possible only with view cameras or tilt-shift lenses, and finally, stitching multiple images makes it possible to capture extremely wide panoramas, like here.

... (continued from my blog) I found a nice small waterfall, probably not even two feet, with nice boulder around. I spent at least 30 minutes searching for a composition I would like but just could not find one. There were too many dead branches catching the light of now almost setting sun.

As I was moving around the scene I focused my attention on the big rocks instead of the waterfall. They were submerging into a deep shadow but I liked how that contrasted the bright green branches in the background ...

In this article, I will go over the steps you need to take and the decisions you need to make to enter the wonderful world of film 35mm photography.

I recommend starting with the 35mm format as the cameras are cheap and plentiful and can deliver great results. They are small thus making it easy...

... the less usual view of Letchworth State Park and the Genesee River. It's not from the top of the high cliffs but rather from the river bed. The low water levels in autumn allow for most of the river bed to overgrow with vegetation and the river is squeezed out into a very narrow section. I really liked the intense yellows here showing off under the cloudy sky of the day ...

I sensed that my photo stream has gotten a bit too chilly lately and needed some color and warmth. Nope, not going back to archives, and not even posting a photo from a warmer day. In fact, it was bitterly cold and windy around 10 Fahrenheit, with a monster snow cloud hanging over downtown Buffalo, traffic on I-190 down to a crawl. I was one of three cars that passed through the Broderick Park on Squaw Island in about an hour, not the usual traffic the park gets at sunset.

I was curious about the mighty Niagara River how it was doing with the temperatures around 0°F for a few days. At this swift section the river was flowing with its regular speed with no ice, not even along the shore! Only an occasional "iceberg" that must have slipped over the ice boom on Lake Erie. On the other hand, the Black Rock Canal pictured here did not fail me and its fully frozen state put the winter signature on this photo.

Often, photographers go for, or say they go for, look of their photos that show what it felt like to be there. Full disclosure, not here. It really felt cold and unpleasant. However, I wanted a colorful warm photo that would warm up my photo stream and show winter as an attractive season. It was photographed at dusk. There was not much of a sunset looking west as clouds covered up the whole sky all the way to the horizon but still the sun managed to push some color towards the eastern sky, which is the direction you're looking in here. I felt like playing a little with the Nik Collection, now owned by Google, and used Analog Efex Pro & Color Efex Pro 4 on top of my normal processing in Capture NX2.

On a side note, this photo is handheld at 1/20 sec and ISO 6400! It's amazing what cameras can do these days. I am very happy with the level of noise, especially given the triple processing (saving as 16-bit TIFFs in between).

As you can see, I am still in denial about the whole end of the Fall season :-) This photo takes us back to the Shenandoah National Park at the end of October. For the most part I found myself drawn to wide vistas of the Shenandoah Valley, and the streams and waterfalls rushing down the slopes of Blue Ridge Mountains. Here however, the large boulder seemed to have put the season on display in its own way!

Polarizing filter really made a huge difference here. Without it, there was so much glare off the rock and the leaves that the colors were completely obliterated!

Salute to Autumn: To salute the wonderful colorful season that has passed I've added a new Autumn collection to my website spanning various galleries and showcasing nature's artful and colorful creations.

Revisiting Locations & The Unplanned: I've had posts on both topics in the past.

The first one is revisiting locations. There is such a variety one can get in the same place! Different season, different time of the day, different weather, or just simply noticing different and new things on repeated visits. That is what is great about locations close to home. One can return many times and explore the locations' changing faces.

The second one is allowing for the unplanned to take over. While I like to plan where to go and what to focus on, where the sun or moon are going to be, how the light will look, whether there is a chance for fog, and more, I also feel it is essential to let go of these once on location and allow for a healthy dose of spontaneity.

Both came together here ...

Road Trip 2013 - Day 6 - June 16 - Mesa, Colorado

... (continued from my blog) as I moved around my tripod I looked up behind me and what I saw there got me excited even more. For a brief moment, I felt like I was in a jungle. The moss covered tree trunk just above my head and the lush green vegetation beyond, bending down over the creek. It felt so chaotic, yet orderly at the same time. The wonders of nature ...

Today weather really sucked! Who needs 50°F and rain in winter? It's the second time this season we have lost a beautiful dose of clean white snow. I could not watch it and headed for cover …

In 2013, my photos went on display in two highly frequented locations. First, the Mall at Greece Ridge in Rochester, NY included two of my photos as huge murals in one of the mall's wings. Later, NFTA included two in the subway of Buffalo. I spent three hours today hopping station to station trying to find them. I was only successful with one, of the Lower Akron Falls, but found it in three copies at the University, LaSalle, and Summer-Best stations. Here's one from the University Station with an arriving train.

I must also add that the work of other local photographers definitely brought the subway tunnels to life, most specifically the photos of Terry Cervi and Kristen Roess, with a small contribution from me and Tom Wolf. They're some great inspirational photos and even though this may feel like a strange gallery, go for a ride and stroll around the stations - photos are both along the platforms and in the above ground buildings (of the underground section).

Both Rochester murals are included on My Photo Blog and more subway shots are coming your way.

*** Spodní akronské vodopády ve stanici Universita buffalského metra

Dnešní počasí opravdu stálo za prd, pas by nevyhnal! Kdo potřebuje teplo a déšť uprostřed zimy?

Whether you are a fan of trains or not if you're passing through Nebraska on I-80 near North Platte I'd recommend this stop. You can spend as much or as little time as you want. I love fall with its colors, who doesn't? I also like winter with its clean whiteness. I don't mind the cold when I am ready for it. But the transition period is often tough. The colors are gone and the white blanket is not here yet. And sunsets are early, days are short.

Yesterday, I wanted to do some sunset exploration around the lake but it was 27°F and very windy. I was not ready for an extended photo session yet though! My winter gear still needed tuning. However, the inclement weather brought in some wonderful ominous clouds and the late afternoon sun was playing peek-a-boo. light was changing fast and photographic opportunities were plentiful. I could not keep myself inside!

I've included more about how I got from my initial establishing shot to this version in my blog post Between Fall and Winter, Orchard Park Library.

Abstracts are very special to me. It feels like I do not seek them, yet, they keep finding me. There's so much freedom in them. They can't really be right or wrong.

It's also always fun to watch and hear others interpret them when they face their mystery without knowing what they are. Like this one, what is it? Unlike many other types of photography abstracts allow your imagination run free. There are no real limits because who is to say what they really are?

Have fun thinking this one through!

Road Trip 2013 - Day 3 - June 13 - Iowa

Another one from Day 3, in a similar fashion as the last one, just a bit more off-roady :-) Day 3 took us across the rest of Iowa. Covered Bridges of Madison County were a must see, as was John Wayne's birth house. Later, White Pole Road was an outstanding classic and a great alternative to the Interstate - a bit of a prelude to our return along Route 66.

The Photo:

The other day I posted the last photo from my photo op on the Squaw Island, this is one of the first ones. As I was trying to find a position to silhouette the bridge against as much of the dusk sky as possible, a few cars went by and I had to move the tripod out of the way. It took me a while but I realized that the cars were not a problem but a bonus. I definitely like this one more than the car free ones.

Flickr:

I'm trying to stay positive here and wait out the initial "shock" of the Flickr change. It probably needed an overhaul not to fall further behind but whether it was done right or not I am not sure. Neither am I sure I know any longer how to effectively use it, or if there even is a way. I'm falling back on my iPhone apps I've been using for a while since those did not change. However, I am not sure what's going to happen to this whole platform that changed so radically. Getting info and following my contacts and great photography is ... well, different.

The best of luck, fellow Flickerers ...

Road Trip 2013 - Day 3 - June 13 - Iowa

There are many iconic roads in the United States that all experienced a similar sequence of events from the initial efforts to build them through a period of high popularity and fame to an Interstate induced decline. A little different take on the well known waterfall. You are looking at a close up of the American Falls illuminated with colored lights at dusk. I enjoyed this more intimate view through the camera as a balancing act to the more known grand views. At the bottom, you can see a portion of the rocky pile up that lowers the actual waterfall height, as described below. The combination of falling water and the rocks provides a glimpse into the waterfall's past, present, and future.

Photographed a bit earlier than the previous post from this location and also from the other side, looking north-east here. It was a very cold evening with some gusts too. The Black Rock Canal pictured here was fully frozen without a doubt but the mighty Niagara River did not even think about that and seemed to defy physics with the temperatures bouncing between 0°F and 20°F for several weeks.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 5 - June 15 - Colorado

Saturday marked a major milestone on our road trip. After five days on the road we were to make it to our Colorado base near Mesa, CO where we would stay for a week and do trips within its area before starting the return leg of our trip. The Mesa, Colorado base would split our trip into three separate phases: 1) Buffalo, New York to Mesa, Colorado 2) Colorado and Utah exploration 3) Return to Buffalo through a southern route via New Mexico and Texas.

We started the final approach near Denver and quickly found our way to the Rocky Mountains via I-70 ...

... From my previous short visit to the Denver area I knew about the great views along US 6 so that was where our next detour from the Interstate led. We were soon rewarded with some beautiful views of the snow capped peaks around us. And driving the winding road was rewarding too, much better than holding the steering wheel straight on a freeway. As we were climbing to the 11,990 feet we passed a group of bicyclists doing it in a more rewarding way ... Road Trip: The Continental Divide at Loveland Pass, Colorado.

Ok, I warmed up the photo stream a little so let's go back to the winter reality!

I was also considering the "Rule of Thirds" name for this photo. And it also reminds me of a flag with the three horizontal stripes theme.

It's a photograph of Lake Erie from Hamburg Beach a few miles south of Buffalo, NY. I had to walk in a bit and cross a line of snow volcanoes, a snow and ice buildup along the shore. In fact, that is what provided my elevated viewpoint here. While I often try to get low to the ground for a different perspective I intentionally wanted to be higher up here to be able to tilt the camera down, not give much focus to the cloudless sky and show both the foreground layer with smooth snow as well as the middle section with the choppy ice and snow. Once past the snow volcano line, the landscape was flat and frozen as far as one could see. That is what I imagine the arctic tundra to look like but this one is right in my back yard.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 11 - June 20 - Utah

I really wanted to present my road trip photos chronologically, but out of the window that idea is with this fast forward from day 3 to 11. Oh well, just finished working my photos from that great place and figured I'd start with this photo from there :-)

Have a great week all and thanks for all your visits, comments, and fans. Now let's hope Yahoo can keep Flickr up. Cheers!

Road Trip 2013 - Day 4 - June 14 - Nebraska

Whether you are a fan of trains or not if you're passing through Nebraska on I-80 near North Platte I'd recommend this stop. You can spend as much or as little time as you want. If you can I'd also recommend skipping the elevator in the Golden Spike Tower and heading for the stairs. It just might be the best way to stretch your legs and get the circulation going again!

There are many clichés in photography, the lonely tree being one of them. But how do you resist? This one was ahead of the season with branches already bare, yet standing in the middle of a warm colored mountain meadow at the top of Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. It looked like a bald wise man watching over the rest of the meadow. Needless to say, cliché or not, the car went on the shoulder, camera in my hands, the polarizer on the lens, and this photo on the memory card!

The previously posted Trail #13 leads down to the Genesee River, which is more of a gentle creek this time of the year.

Trees lining the road in the southern part of Emery Park showing off their brand new foliage. Just a week ago, this was a very different scene with trees still looking bare and buds visible only upon a close inspection. Spring came in full force and the warm weather dressed nature in greens and yellows, and wildflowers popped up everywhere too.

Nature's Chaos …

This is from a recent fall trip to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. I always like to keep my eyes open for both wide views, and some intimate portraits of nature, like here, a cross between real and abstract.

Later on the computer, the photo reminded me of my post from last winter about Nature's Chaos, and a book with photographs by Eliot Porter I enjoyed very much:

Road Trip 2013 - Day 2 - June 12 - Indiana, Illinois, Iowa

On our last stop for the day we caught sunset in the Iowa capital Des Moines, here providing a nice backdrop for the state capitol.
