"This half-length portrait shows L.A. Phillips on the gun deck of the submarine H.M.S. Torbay. Phillips was mentioned in despatches for his bravery during World War II, and awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM). His relaxed, informal pose is typical of William Dring's style. Dring was a successful London artist who specialised in portraits and landscapes, usually working with pastels or w/cs. He became an official War Artist in 1940. An extensive collection of his work is held at the Imperial War Museum, London." Bridgman Images.
