Titmouse and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. The Titmouse is getting a dring as the Grosbeak, a young male, feeds from the tray of seeds. I know it is a poor picture, but it is the first time we have had a chance to get a shot of one this fall. Mostly they stay down in the Giant Ragweed plants. They love the seeds.

On a mass scale, average citizens are compelled toward the digital strip-tease of their private selves or others – all the more comfortable with surveillance, the mass marketing of the photo op, the public defamation of rivals, the fierce cultural cling to childhood obsessions, the landscape portrait of a vacation experience, self personalization in all its forms – true or false. And during days of such exposition, what is concealed? Unspoken? Implied? How does this align with competing impulses within the artist practice? Self portraiture, windows into the intimate lives of self or others, the evolution of the ‘photo bomb’, digital spectatorship, jealous landscape photography, public confessional, criminal intent? Or does art subsist always on Wilde’s ethos of ultimately concealing the artist no matter what? Exposing only ‘beautiful things’ – concept, process, form. And then what are these pretenses at self-exposure, and where do artist’s hide, so to speak, in plain view? Under what false legacies, muddled academicisms, hall-of-mirrors conceits.

Taalmanipulatie en taalzuivering
In Nederland is begin dit jaar enige beroering ontstaan door de bekendmaking van een handleiding “Waarden voor een nieuwe taal”. Doelstelling: een gedekoloniseerde, inclusieve en toegankelijke taal. Achterliggende gedachte: de samenleving verandert en een “nieuwe generatie makers, denkers, sprekers, schrijvers en activisten staat op.”.
De samenleving moet zich dus aanpassen aan “de groeiende mondigheid van gemarginaliseerde personen, mondiale bewegingen zoals #metoo, Black Lives Matter en Pride, nationale bewegingen zoals Kick Out Zwarte Piet en Decolonize the Museum en de effecten van COVID-19. ”.
Tegenspraak is overbodig: de Nederlandse taal moet worden bijgeschaafd. Die taal staat immers voor de opvattingen van de “dominante machtsgroep” en weerspiegelt de superioriteit en machtspositie. Begrippen als migratieproblematiek of vluchtelingencrisis stigmatiseren. Er is geen sprake meer van “slaven”, het gaat nu over “tot slaaf gemaakten”. Terecht merkt Gerry Van Der List (Elsevier) op dat het woord slaven blijkbaar niet duidelijk genoeg wordt geacht en voor de doorsnee Nederlander, in de ogen van de stellers van de leidraad, blijkbaar toch nog een gunstige klank heeft.
Lingua Tertii Imperii
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog houdt de Duitse filoloog Victor Klemperer een dagboek bij. Deze (Tot het bittere einde. Dagboeken 1933 -1945) registreren het dagdagelijkse gebeuren en geven een inkijk in het verhullende taalgebruik van het regime.

Het was knallend druk bij de Zwarte Loper, waar alle superhelden hun grootse entree maakten. Uw reporter kwam er niet meer tussen. Later betere foto's. To be continued...
