A molten purple waterlily rising out of a midnight pond. It appears to be the lone actress in the center of a darkened stage lit with only a spotlight.

Another shot taken after the preceding image posted on a morning where there was a shot in each direction. It is amazing to watch the clouds form and build at around the summit of Grandfather Mountain and at any time of year it a good idea to pay attention to what's happening to prevent being caught in a storm. The broken clouds to the east let just enough light through to color and illuminate the forming clouds rolling across the peak as I snapped the shutter...

This is an example of the type of post-processing I sometimes do... I drop brightness and exposure way down which compacts the tonal resolution artificially, and then adjust light levels accordingly. This reduction of the number of tones in the image can produce nice drama in scenes with light/dark contrasts. At the extreme, you could have a monotone (pure black and pure white); the image above probably contains about 10 or 15 tones. (Note: In the original post I called this "Low Dynamic Range"; I believe "Low Tonal Resolution" is more accurate.) (Explore)

Drama in spades with this sky at twilight.

Preparing for the photo shoot by getting the hair just right!

I took this image several months ago and lost track of it until recently. Originally taken in color, I converted it to black and white in Lightroom to see the effect. I like the mood and contrast ("drama") that the B&W version creates. The image was taken late afternoon near sunset in a local golf course.

After the evil eye.

This spiral is the result of sharpening an eyeliner (kajal). That gave me the idea with the evil eye ...

The ancient Egyptians were not only seductively seduced by black kajal eyes, but also believed that they could avert the "evil eye". Fear of the evil eye is widespread worldwide and can be found in many cultures. The evil eye is the idea that by the sight of someone who possesses magical powers, another may suffer disaster, be put to death, or be harmed. Kajal also has the ability to swallow the sunlight, just as the black color around the eyes of the base and football players ensures that the floodlight is not reflected ;-)

Drama. Schutz fehlgeschlagen.

I've been admiring desert skies for a long time now, and I think last weekend might have topped my list of best skies ever! I very nearly didn't go out because flash flood warnings were in effect. This was taken just before sunset near the intersection of Pinto Basin Rd. and Stirrup Tank Rd. in Joshua Tree National Park. There was a light rain falling off in the distance (left center of the photo) and the rain/mist was picking up some pretty colors, almost rainbow-like.

One of two fine evenings we enjoyed along the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake in Glacier National Park. The clouds rolled in, and there was just enough light from the setting sun to add a bit of drama to those amazing clouds. Gotta love Mother Nature's shows.

Have a great Friday.....thanks for all your comments and visits!!!!

Some drama over the city last weekend

A melodramatic piece in the Bonsai garden at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA

Kirkjufell, the iconic mountain from Iceland and one of the most dramatic locations. Experienced a notorious weather, rain/clouds in every 5 min interval. A shot not many publish, is with the private farm below it!

This tree just couldn't get enough of herself. She kept checking out her sexy shadow splashed up on that vibrant wall. Can't say I blame her. . .I, for one, fell for it.

Just testing some tweaking with an older photo.
