Down by the dam again for the nightly light show.

This winter I did not see Double-crested Cormorants as often as I had in other years.

It has been a long, long time since I last wore a tie. It could well be over 4 years ago. Since then, my shirt has crept a bit (or did my neck get larger??) and I had to practice the double windsor knot again.

About 15 years back, when I started in consultancy, the suit and tie (or corporate leash as my colleague used to call them) were still obligatory.

But nowadays, more and more companies allow casual clothing. So the suit and tie stay in the wardrobe for most of the time.

For: Looking close... on Friday!

Theme: Knots

Leafless Elm trees are reflected in the perfectly still waters of our pond this morning. Fog from the still-warm waters of the Millstone River rise in the background. It was 29F this morning!

I have not seen Cormorants around much this winter. With all the ice on lakes and ponds it made things difficult for them.

A raft of DCCs all swimming together in unison. This is about 1/4 of the size of the raft.

Away from home, a new to me bourbon I have been enjoying joined me for the trip. As did a Mint TLR, Instax square film. This camera is growing on me.

Taken with a Ricoh GRIIIx, nice little camera.

I like the challenges for creativity that the Macro Mondays group provides each week. Practice and shutter clicks help me improve my skills. Thanks, Macro Mondays group and administrators! HMM

Unplanned double exposure with my Fuji G 617 Panorama Camera in Hampton, Georgia

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Taken looking through the bedroom window of our motorhome while staying at Wilderness Lakes NACO near Menifee, California. (16-01-08-0345)

Once T001 completed the see-saw maneuver at Cragin/A5 and parked themselves on M3, the waiting game began. I naively hoped they would run behind Amtrak 339. But after they passed, no lineup appeared. T001 toned up the tower and confirmed that they would run behind Metra 2617.

After 2617 cleared, T001 was off to the races, sorta. Dimensional steel forced their 5000-ft train through the 10-mph cross-overs. And then UP lined an inbound in front of them at Mayfair. All the while the cloud line kept inching north. It would be close and I needed T001 to be nipping the heels of 2617.

Fortunately, the engineer ran on approaches, keeping it tight. About 4 minutes after 2617 passed below, with the sun dipping into the diffuse fringes of clouds, T001's headlight popped around the corner and passed below about 6 minutes later at 1823. When I got back to my car, the clouds had pretty much taken over. Every minute mattered here. Big thanks to all those who provided the assist this day. I'm grateful to finally have some daylight WSOR coverage in the Chicago region.

Double 5's 45407 as 45157 and 45212 on a freight service from Ramsbottom to Bury Bolton Street.

A double exposure of the same scene with and without a Hoya R72 infrared filter. With the IR filter, the exposure was 90 seconds (at f/8).

Trouble is, the film didn't stay completely put when reloading the shutter, so the IR exposure is shifted considerably to the right from the visible light exposure.

It looks a bit like fall colours, but the leaves were still green when I took this picture in late August.

The phrase "double take" refers to a reaction where someone looks at something, then quickly looks again in surprise or disbelief—like a delayed realisation or shock.

Panorama Of Double Arch in Arches National Park, Utah. This is a re-edit of a image I was not satisfied with from last summer. This is a combination of 20 vertical images stitched together in photoshop, taken with a 15 mm Sigma fisheye lens. The idea was to capture both arches as well as the Milky Way seen through the "roof". I have removed some of the distortion in photoshop. Canon 6D, Sigma 15 mm fisheye lens at f/2.8, 30 sec exposures, ISO 6400. The light pollution in the distance is from the town of Moab, Utah. The distortion is from trying to make the inside of a spherical object fit into a rectangle. Pretend that the image is folded around your sides and head!

Thanks for looking! Hope you enjoy!

It's always a bit tempting to edit out all the mess that surrounds cormorants, but... nature, you know?
