DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT

Double Helix is a macro photograph of a pod.

I posted a photo of Paulina Falls a couple of weeks ago from our time in Oregon. It only showed one of the falls, that I took from an overlook. Here are both the falls. We had to walk down a dangerous switch back trail covered with slippery bits of hard snow to get to this point, my sherpa carrying my gear :) No accidents or injuries, which was good :)

Zoom in and take a look around....

the crowned eagle (stephanoetus coronatus) is a lifer sighting.

to find a couple is a real privilege.

for years I was haunted by the dream to meet the most powerful african eagle.

a bit smaller than martial eagle is considered stronger and surely more aggressive than the savannah cousin.

crowned eagles are now rare and always elusive.they stay usually hidden and hunt in the forest like a huge goshawk.those raptors prey mainly on mammals of medium /big size (till small antelopes of 30/40kgs) ,monitors and sometimes big birds but....they are specialized on monkeys.monkeys have pratically 4 hands with opposable fingers and it means they can damage the vital feathers of the predator before to die.

this is why the crowned eagle is equipped with incomparable weapons.

two opposable talons are very big and large.the eagles use it to pierce the skull of the prey to kill it instantly.

crowned eagles are famous to be also cooperative hunters, this is why my title ,"double trouble".

shot at big distance, bad light(almost backlight) ,duplicator and high iso.....next time will be better:-)

Another shot of one of the pretty mountain lakes of Macun. It's a rather longish hike, all in all, but I can't wait to go there again.

This is such an elegant mirror that is quite proportional to the room it is in! Have a wonderful Sunday.

An abstract made from an everyday scene in suburbia.

Lake Cavloc, near Maloja pass, Switzerland.

It was windy when we arrived at the idyllic mountain lake after a nice hike through majestic alpine scenery. When we explored the area around the lake in the late afternoon, the wind gradually calmed down until this wonderful reflection finally emerged.

Because of their shape, Double Late Tulips are also known as peony-flowered tulips. The flowers, which are always large and double, can easily reach a span of 4 in. across (10 cm). Some cultivars are sweetly fragrant. Blooming in late spring, these tulips introduce charm and romance in the garden with their multi-petalled flowers! ...

A Double-crested Cormorant poses for a quick portrait beside the water at Fred Howard Park

The gangly Double-crested Cormorant is a prehistoric-looking, matte-black fishing bird with yellow-orange facial skin. Though they look like a combination of a goose and a loon, they are relatives of frigatebirds and boobies and are a common sight around fresh and salt water across North America—perhaps attracting the most attention when they stand on docks, rocky islands, and channel markers, their wings spread out to dry. These solid, heavy-boned birds are experts at diving to catch small fish.

During a heavy rain , winds and sunset. The double rainbow.

I've done these so many times in the past with some success, but this one was particularly difficult - wore me out! So I cropped and stopped ;D

Best viewed by zooming in - shows all the layers :)

Dear friends, I´ll be back again in 2016. :-)

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The hardware cloth is around milkweed plants that I will cover with netting so the Monarchs, if and when they arrive, can't leave eggs all over... I have plenty of plants in the ground waiting for them to leave me as many little pearls as they want!!

Cypripedium calceolus (Gelber Frauenschuh, Lady's slipper orchid) Karlschütt, Steiermark, Austria. I noticed a lot of double-headed lady's slippers this year, but maybe they were there every year anyway.

Enjoying a nature walk, past a few semi-wooded fields, I came across these two-coloured tulips – so unexpected, so vibrant! Amongst the trees and the various grasses, these red and yellow tulips stuck out like beacons in an otherwise green and untended landscape. I wonder who it was that one day decided to plant those bulbs out there!
