Thanks!

At Rosser Ave in Bismarck ND. With the "Big Dipper" above on a cold snowy night. I was at Crosby ND the day before where it had just snowed 18". Was busy with work and not able to shoot a lot in the day...I gotta retire.
This image was taken on a blackwater dive about 3 miles off of Kona Hawaii. The water here is around 6000ft deep. At night there is a mass migration of sea life from the depths up to the surface that reverses during the day. It is called the Diurnal Ocean Migration (DMV) and is an opportunity to see mesopelagic creatures on scuba. Much of what you find are invertebrates or larval fish. I am not sure what kind of fish this is, but if I had to guess it was some sort of juvenile longfin bannerfish. It is very cool. We did this dive with Jack's Diving Locker and it did not go very smoothly. They call this dive "Pelagic Magic." The way it works is that they have three 45ft lines on each side of the boat (fore, mid, aft) with a weight on the end. When you enter the water, you swim to one of the lines and clip your BCD onto it with a 8ft tether that allows you to slide up and down. Since you are clipped to the boat, you only have to worry about maintaining buoyancy and your air. You shine lights into the blackness to see what drifts by. Usually they deploy a parachute underwater to act as a sea anchor. This ensures that the boat drifts with the current and essentially ignores any wind that would otherwise drag the boat through the water. Since you are tethered to the boat, which is locked to the current, divers should see the water to be stationary. Unfortunately, for reasons that are still unclear to me, they did not deploy the sea anchor, despite that fact that there was a substantial wind. The consequence was that when we clipped onto the down lines, we were being dragged through the water. The boat was moving sideways relative to the current so the starboard side divers were pushed under the boat far to the port. This wasn't particularly dangerous, but it made the dive challenging. Being dragged like kites in the wind made buoyancy control tricky. It also made photography extra challenging. When I spotted something I wanted to photograph, it would blast past me, with only a few seconds to compose a shot. I am grateful that I got any images at all and especially happy to have gotten this beautiful shot. I also want to point out that Gretchen did great on this dive, even with the challenging conditions. She clipped in, found her buoyancy, and enjoyed the ride.
The lead unit will be our nemesis this week, appearing many times to break up the matched sets in the attractive DMV&W orange and grey scheme.

But much to our chagrin the locomotives are shifted about and we have our patched CN unit in the lead once again. We headed for Merida hoping to get the oft photographed horseshoe curve shot. Little did we know it required a hike and some set up time. We settled for the grade crossing but returned later in the week for the classic view.

Darwin is a interesting little simi-ghost town in the Mojave desert with a population of around 30-40. Abandoned vehicles seem to out number people in this little desert town.
