This is strong metal (most likely aluminum) to replace the worn plastic.
The good part is that the screw points here are in different places than the plastic ones were (which were in the middle). What you can't see is that the screw on the bottom left corner is not perfectly embedded in the wood (hangs out a little bit).
another view of the back end of the belt and tie rack slide portion.
the dowel is attached to where the *inner* part of the belt and tie rack will be. it is designed this way to prevent any snagging with other stuff hanged in the closet. the drawer slide will be attached right above this dowel.
Earlier this morning I worked on my newest DIY project, a jewelry organizer! I've seen a lot of different variations of this project throughout Tumblr, Blogspot, Pinterest, etc, lately and I really wanted to make one of my own. I made this using an 8 x 10 photo frame which I bought at the dollar store (and then I mixed a few acrylics together to create a mint green paint which I used to recolor the frame), fabric from an old thrifted dress, and string to hold the jewelery. Then I added a few earrings and hung it up on my wall to use!
we are using chalkboard paint to make this wall into a writable / washable surface. the color, when he moved it, was cranberry, as you can see. it is *very* poorly done; I sanded off as many drips as I could, but many remain. I also patched some holes, as you can see.
another crazy thing about this house is that it is full of solid oak-- the floors, the trim, the paneling, and the cabinets. it's beautiful. it's also under several coats of THICK white paint. that cabinet mugging these pictures? solid oak. we are in the process of stripping that paint, but I am lazy and eager to have my chalkboard, and so I only stripped the stuff immediately surrounding the wall to be painted.
also, the jacket in the chair makes the room look a lot messier than it actually is.

Today Olivia's dad and I decided to tackle one of my diy projects I have been wanting to do. We built a small "beauty dish" for my flash unit. Usually they run for about $40 dollars on amazon. After we made this, all in all it cost about $5. :D

This is one coat of the dark brown (fig tree). Most of the finish washed off with a comet/bleach solution (lightly scrubbed & rinsed with a water hose). The first coat of paint still has trouble sticking. This picture shows a lot of the streaking...looking better all the time.
I’m sure many of my friends would disown me for this blatant rip-off statement, however I think there is something so appealing about the obvious hand-drawn aesthetic of it and the notion of something so iconic being easily replicated by hand - perhaps this is the three years of studying fine art finally affecting me. This is why I chose to leave the CC patchy in terms of colouring, however I didn’t want it to be too “scribbly”. The print took awhile to draw, especially because the double C’s needed to be so symmetrical and the lettering was a bit of a slow process, however there is nothing I love more than a white t-shirt with a bold black print, and this is no exception.

For the freaky fingers, place the first five ingredients and a pinch of salt in a food processor and whizz just until a ball of dough forms. Tear off a golfball-size piece of dough and use your hands to roll into finger-size cylinders – you should get about 20. Place on a baking sheet lined with baking parchment – a little apart as they will spread during baking. Use a knife to make a few cuts, close together, for the knuckles. Place an almond at the end of each finger and trim away excess pastry around the edge to neaten. Place in the fridge for 30 mins, heat oven to 180C/160F/Gas 4, then bake for 10-12 mins just until firm. Leave to cool a little, then paint the almond with food colouring, if you like. Makes 20.
For the brainballs, place the popping corn and vegetable oil in a large pan set over a medium heat. Stir the kernels around the pan to coat in the oil. When the kernels starts to pop, place a lid firmly on top and turn the heat down to low. Cook, shaking the pan often to stop the popcorn burning or sticking, until the corn has stopped popping, about 5 mins. Tip into a bowl, discarding any unopened kernels. Heat butter and marshmallows over a low heat until melted. Pour over popcorn and mix well until coated. Lightly rub oil over your hands and shape the popcorn into small balls. Set aside on a tray lined with baking parchment and leave to set. Makes 10.
For the bloodthirsty squash, fill up a kitchen glove with water, secure the end with a freezer clip or rubber band and place in the freezer overnight. When ready to serve, stir together 1 litre each lemonade and cranberry juice with the juice 3-4 limes. Pour into a punch bowl. Remove the hand from the freezer and use scissors to carefully take off the glove. Place in the punch bowl and serve. Serves 10.

it comes in black and stainless. i used stainless here to match the rest of the hardware.
I liked the way they contrasted with the green of their leaves, so I I displayed them this way. Once they're dried, you can decorate a cupcake with one or put a ring around a cake. They'd be lovely on a wedding cake at a reception!
