35mm wide red scale pinhole camera

Kodak gold200

Exposure time-about 10sec

I stopped one time early evening at a Waffle House off of highway 85 in Southern Georgia. You usually won’t come across a male waiter at a Waffle House, but this was my case at this particular establishment on this particular night. I was served by a middle-aged man, his eyes said he had better things to be doing than shuffling grits and coffee to truckers and travelers, he moved softly, I ordered grits and coffee. His name tag flipped my way – it read “Lost”.

I often try to figure strangers out – create some kind of fictional history: where they grew up, what they were like as kids, where summers were spent, reasons why they do or don’t miss their families, what sets them off, what calms their nerves, where they’ll be 10 years from now, what they’ll be thinking in the last waking minutes of their day. Most of the time I can take a pretty good shot. Whether or not it does their actual background any justice - I’ll never know - but it still pleases me to try.

Now, Lost. My best guess is that he materialized on an empty country mile such as this one, cold and snowy - maybe hot and dusty, wandered right into that South Georgia Waffle House and asked “Your manager here?” And there he spends his days, wearing his wild name tag and bussing lonely truckers under fluorescent lights. I suppose he’ll eventually walk back down that country mile to the top of the road, lift the sky like a curtain, and slip back under.

This pinhole was open when I was home, I kind of gave up on this and just left it open after forgetting for a week.

There's a bit more electrical tape on it than that now, but otherwise how it looked for the first test roll. Still needs work, but basically functional

I originally purchased this wood to make the film holder - the Iroko was just an old shelf which I cut up to use as the prototype, so as not to waste this 'good stuff'. The grain is quite wavy, though. Certainly not quarter sawn top quality stuff!

This is the wood I used to make the film holder. I think it may be iroko. It came from an old shelf which must be at least 25 years old. It works really well on the router - although it doesn't plane well, the grain tends to tear where it runs in the wrong direction. After routing or planing it looks quite pale and yellowish, but curiously the saw dust is brick red.

Hello again, all.

This is something from a project I started long ago and never quite finished for some reason. In hindsight I think I was trying to bite off more than I could chew, and the project took a back seat out of frustration. I had images in my mind that I couldn't quite create 100% on film.

BUT, I'm posting this to let you know that S. M. Bower is now in Texas, and he's not deadz.

More to come soon, I think.

I love you all.
