“As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being” C. G. Jung

The dark does not destroy the light... it defines it

Its our fear of that dark that cast our joy into the shadows

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence

Is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being

Whenever it gets dark... dont be afraid

You have the choice to bring out the light within you

Hope is being able to see that there is light despite the darkness

And in order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present

This photograph was taken in August this year during sunset at Upper Seletar Reservoir.

The setting sun illuminated the sky and clouds with various interesting shapes and shades above the vegetation.. It could be discerned behind the silhouetted tree top.

Crocosmias are Hummingbird magnets. This is the Hummingbird that frequents Eastern gardens and feeders. Both sexes have glittering green crown and upper parts and the underparts are grayish to white. Males have black faces and deep orange-red throat, or gorget. The humming of its wings is clearly discernable form some distance. Males often arrive on breeding grounds well ahead of the females.

A classic side profile of this bird, with the tell-tale chestnut sides that make it easier to separate from the similiar Blackpoll than trying to discern leg color. In St Louis, time of year is also a strong indicator with Bay-breasts far outnumbering Blackpolls in the fall, and the reverse holding true in the spring. Glendale, Missouri.

Looking for a Barred Owl before sunrise, I spotted this Heron far-off, in a tree. It took me a while to discern its shape to be a heron.

A moment of brilliant sunlight in the aftermath of winter storm reveals an overwhelming complexity of shadows and texture. The midday sun is still fairly low in the sky, and the shadows it casts remain absurdly long. The human eye, dazzled by the reflection of sun on snow, sees scenes such as this as a monolith of brilliant white. Only the most prominent shadows are detectable as I walk through the village. Yet the camera is recording shadows cast by even minuscule bumps and contours in the snow. Such minute detail would be completely absorbed into the landscape absent snow cover. It's odd in a way, shooting blindly into bright sun, not really seeing what you've captured until post processing.

Another aspect of snowscapes is the bleaching of the color spectrum. In many cases, blue sky is the only discernible color. It's only natural to focus on the cold and snow for those that experience winter climates. But for me the extreme reduction in color is equally wearisome. I long for the return of color, even the washed out hues of a winter thaw. Until then, I have to content myself with this wintry shadowland.

I make a point of purchasing most of my camera gear from London Camera Exchange which is just discernible on the rhs about halfway up (count 5 shopfronts).

Chapel Rocks is in Squantum, south of Boston. It's a remarkable location near Nickerson beach that I hadn't visited in a while. I went there yesterday at dawn, and it didn't disappoint. In the background, you can discern the Boston Harbor Islands. At low tide, a sand spit forms that allows you to walk to Thompson Island.

The image was built up using a multitude of stellated mirrors but "Consummation", while still using mirroring, is patterned more with right angles. Some may see 'Crosses' and 'Stars of David' and wonder if there's a covert religious message here. There isn't. It is all about shapes and visual relationships ... nothing more. Besides, both the stars and the crosses are truncated in certain places, so they really bear no connection to religious icons. 6 Point stars and cross shapes exist in many Non-Abramic cultures. Art in the service of pure Abstraction is the intent here.

Again, I indulged in the play between symmetry and asymmetry. When utilizing previous images in these collages, elements and features of those pieces still show, which adds to the interest of the finished "Extreme Mirror" work. Bits of line, text and parts of discernible images peek through. And one is hard-pressed to find where one element, shape or graphic begins and another begins. Layers are deliberately mixed and layered in such a way that very little has total dominance. These pieces then, weave back and forth between fore, middle and back grounds. This falls in line with my view that no single, fixed view of reality can be the total picture.

Moonlight Pleasure (I am talking about the Sim, not the eponymous activity) has a reasonable amount to recommend it if you can actually find your way out of the formal gardens. Not easy. Or am I just dumb? Here's a hint. Even though there's no discernible path through the gates and you have to wait for them to open when you finally click on them, that's actually the way

Well, after a sixteen month absence from the hills and mountains I was finally able to sample a superb day out in the great outdoors. Our lockdown rules have been relaxed sufficient to allow day trips for exercise. Mark would provide the company but we have both been pretty strict when it comes to Covid rules so travelled separately.

Our views were that we should find somewhere that was off the beaten track, without too much of a journey, so a ten mile leg stretcher over Swarth Fell and Wild Boar Fell became the chosen hike.

As can be seen the weather was superb with far ranging views offered in all directions. The scene here looks out from the rounded summit of Swarth Fell. Just discernible are the Howgills and over to the the right the plateau topped Wild Boar Fell. Railway photographers will perhaps recognise the outline of the latter hill.

Ennio Morricone - El bueno, el feo y el malo.

The Castello Estense or castello di San Michele is a moated medieval castle in the center of Ferrara, northern Italy. It consists of a large block with four corner towers.

On 3 May 1385, the Ferrarese people, driven to desperation by taxes and flooding that had brought ruin upon them, took themselves to the Marquis Niccolò II d'Este's palace to ask the advice of Tommaso da Tortona, the high official held to be responsible for this grave situation. Nicolò tried to calm the revolt all day, but by the evening it was clear that the people's spirits were getting more and more angry and that the very safety of the Estensi was endangered. The order was therefore given to summon the disgraced Tommaso, who was given confession and communion and then given to the crowd, who literally tore him to pieces.

The western drawbridge. The tower features machicolations near the top.

This episode, which resulted later in the death of the leaders of the revolt, convinced the Marquis that the family's palace (which is now the Palazzo Comunale) was insufficient to guarantee the security of the nobility in the event of riots. He therefore ordered the construction of a defensive fortress on the north side of the Palazzo, entrusting the project to the architect Bartolino da Novara. He used a pre-existing tower (the Torre dei Leoni), which was part of the defensive walls, at that period very much to the south of the present ones, running, roughly speaking, along the line of the present Corso Giovecca and Viale Cavour. The tower was joined by curtain walls to another three newly built for this project. Between the Este residence and the new fortress was built an aerial passageway (perhaps in wood) to allow people to flee from one to the other.Ercole I d'Este on, there are many records of construction of apartments, and of their enlargement and enhancement. The definitive transformation works were ordered by Ercole II after a fire in 1544, which had damaged the previous accommodation. The architect Girolamo da Carpi gave the castle the external appearance which can be still seen today, although the interior has been remodelled several times across the ages. After the departure of the Este to Modena, the castle became the residence of the Papal Legate who administered the Ferrarese territory as civil governor (for a maximum term of four years). There were few changes made to the structure of the building, the most obvious being the increase in height of the north ravelin (the room which currently houses the cafeteria).

In 1860 Ferrara was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. The castle, now state-owned, was bought for 70,000 liras in 1874 by the Province of Ferrara that utilized the structure as headquarters of the Prefecture. In the subsequent decades, the castle underwent many small restoration projects, especially between 1910 and 1930, when some very questionable attempts were done. During World War II it was severely damaged by Allied aerial bombing, thus it was partially reconstructed in 1946.

In 2002, at the initiative of the Provincial administration, the "Castle for the City" project was started: it involved a massive, €2.7m restoration of the castle and a series of exhibition of international significance, such as: "The Triumph of Bacchus: Masterpieces From the Ferrara School at Dresden", inaugurated in 2002 by the then President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, and "A singular Renaissance: the court of Este in Ferrara", inaugurated in 2003 at the Centre for Fine Arts of Brussels and later in Ferrara at the presence of the then President of the European Commission Romano Prodi. In 2004 the whole project of restoration was completed with two significant events: the inauguration of the €1.7m new museum display ideated by archistar Gae Aulenti and the restoration and temporary opening to visitors of the Camerini d'Alabastro ("alabaster cabinets"), secret rooms built by Alfonso d'Este.

Following the 2012 Northern Italy earthquakes, one of the towers partially collapsed and underwent restoration works,

On the outside, the castle essentially presents the appearance given to it by Girolamo da Carpi in the second half of the 16th century. Surrounded by a moat, it has three entrances with drawbridges fronted by brickwork ravelins. The fourth entrance, to the east, was removed to make room for the kitchens.

At the bottom, the appearance of the building still recalls a mediaeval fortress, but higher up, da Carpi replaced the battlements with elegant balconies in white stone (resting on series of corbels), making it higher again by constructing a higher storey, covered by a skew roof. The towers were improved and made more graceful with roof terraces.

The courtyard, nowadays fairly austere, was frescoed. In particular, at the top were portraits of all the ancestors (real and legendary) of the Este family: the only ones surviving, considerably damaged but still discernible, have been detached and placed under the portico on the east side of the courtyard.

The wells were to provide water in time of drought; the round stone balls that are seen about the place are ammunition for catapults

A Chipmunk (evidently a reoccurring presence) sits on an outdoor brick grill and discerns.

Another view of recent glow from the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) captured from 36 degrees Sth latitude. The Milky Way has risen commandingly on the left, while on the right the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are descending, just beyond the South Celestial Pole. The auroral glow has subsided since an earlier image, but with improved atmospheric "seeing" it could just be discerned with averted vision.

I was extremely fortunate to come across a group of wasps drilling their ovipositors into a tree. I've only come across this once before. I believe there were at least three different species. It's amazing they can somehow discern the horntail grubs inside the tree....and lay their eggs on it.

This Eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) sits on a branch at the Springfield Nature Center. As usual, a movement caught my eye and I followed it to this branch. It was far enough away that it took the 600 mm bazooka to discern what it was. Two in one month, I do feel lucky.

Have you ever seen lights in the sky that defied a rational explanation? I saw something at this place that I still cannot explain... so I'll simply call them UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena), which is the newer term for UFOs. That doesn't mean that they were UAPs... maybe you can convince me otherwise.

This picture was taken in the vast reaches of southwestern Wyoming on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). My sister had asked me, "Can you see the Milky Way when you are out in the wilderness?" I woke up around midnight while I was dispersed camping here and remembered her question. I unzipped a window covering on my ALU-CAB rooftop canopy tent to take a look outside. While there were stars in the sky, there was nothing like the Milky Way. From my vantage point, I could see the lights of what looked to be a small town in the far distance (it would have been on the horizon when looking over the middle of the big sagebrush on the right in this image).

Then I noticed a couple of light beams that were moving in the distance. I couldn't tell how far away they actually were but their motion definitely seemed strange. At first, I was convinced that it was a pair of jeeps driving on the distant mountain range at break-neck speeds in the dark. Their lights were slightly above my horizontal field of vision and therefore would have been in the mountains. Their twin pair of "headlights" were beaming up and downâ as though they were going over a series of rises and valleys. It seemed that I could discern red taillights on them, also.

A couple of minutes later, the beams had turned into search lights further up in the sky and scanning the terrain below. I now thought that they must be a pair of helicopters. I strained to hear any sound but it was deadly still and completely quiet. Even more strange... the light beams covered large distances very quickly... a jeep on the dirt trails could not possibly attain those types of speeds nor can jeeps fly in the air.

When faced with the unknown or unidentified, I guess it is natural to become a little uneasy. I was getting slightly edgy. What if these things discovered me while I alone in the middle of nowhere? But there was absolutely nothing that I could do about, so growing sleepy again, I zipped up the window and fell asleep⦠living to tell this tale.

Came upon this miniature angel yesterday as I wandered about the village cemetery. Yet another figurine left in tribute by a loved one on the grave of a family member. I'm drawn to these tiny memorials as if by gravitational pull. It's no longer even a conscious decision really. My thoughts are often scattered like loose change dropped on a bureau. Sometimes my mind goes to the figurine; other times the person's name; most often it's simply how the totality of the scene makes me feel. Here I was caught up in the contemplative sadness imbued in this tiny face, no more than an inch across. I love capturing macro focus views of things that were never intended to be examined so closely. It brings me in tune with a reality that is not discernible to most passers-by. Here I found a microcosm of despair. The only hint of brightness a mid-winter sky. Even that an illusion of sorts as it's nothing more than a reflection of color across the face of the inky blackness of a cold marble gravestone.

Don and I have a 2001 Sprinter Van that he tricked out into a camper. We both love camping, especially in the winter when you can often be the only ones in a state or national park. I have one firm rule when camping. Smile. No-Matter-What. Ice cold showers in the campgrounds? Smile. Alternator quits for the fourth time? Keep my mouth shut and smile. Lost in a Utah canyon with no discernible road? Smile real pretty, because as navigator, that’s on me.

In January 2015, we and our three dogs enjoyed a wonderful wilderness trip across the southern US, up the California coast, and through Oregon to visit his folks in Washington. But after a weekend in Seattle with my in-laws and a day in Spokane with an old friend of Don’s who seemed to thrive in filth, my rule faltered. Don was tired, the dogs had had enough of the van, and bad weather loomed. After a late start heading east on Interstate 90 we got as far as Lookout Pass on the Idaho-Montana border when we realized we were being chased by a storm. A huge winter snowstorm that was closing the interstate behind us. Don determined to stay ahead of the weather, and eight hours later we slid into Billings, Montana. We spent a subzero restless night in a truck stop, diesel engines running all around us. An early pre-dawn pullout dipped us down into Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower National Monument, gates open, the storm left behind.

Daybreak. Don had been here before and wanted to nap. The dogs thought it too cold to venture out. I jumped out of the van and started up the easy path to the tower. No snow on the ground. Alone for the first time in about a month. No one else in the park, not even the rangers. No in-laws, no creepy friend, no dogs, no man in a van. (No offense, guys) A Gift.

There is something extraordinarily soul-feeding about bearing witness to the sun coming up behind a butte rising 1265 ft out of a prairie. To spend an hour in solitary presence. It brings a smile.

3135 feet of elevation gain in 3 1/2 miles. And that's all that I have to say about that...

Mildred point is one of the highest viewpoints on the South side of Rainier next to Van Trump (which is kinda in view to the right) and of course Skyline which if you lost your baring's you might find yourself on the summit of the volcano... It is also unique in that it doesn't take you to a lovely spot, nay, it takes you to a chasm, a rocky valley carved and eroded by many a lahar and landslides depicting the more volatile aspects of the Grand Lady. Up and to the left you can just discern the Kautz Glacier and the birth of the creek by the same name as it is expelled into the world via waterfalls and a downhill run that would make a bobsledder cry. The chill wind is in your face and ruffling your clothes all the while the sound of water surrounds you interrupted occasionally by the sound of a boulder bouncing down the steep slopes and the insanely loud CRACK of the glacier melting in the Summer heat. I was alone as I'd set off at dawn and I couldn't find a bird, squirrel, dear, elk, bear, nor human in any pics or in person, it was eerie, just me and the mountain that I'd not seen in what felt like ages sharing a moment.

God rest the Queen, long live the King.

ps. once you see the smiley face you won't be able to unsee it. :)

Blow it up, lots to see in there.

Upon a mountain's silent crest,

A monochrome canvas, nature's best.

A solitary tree, poised with grace,

At the mountain's edge, in its embrace.

Beside a winding road, it winds and turns,

As if nature's hand in it discerns.

A railway's path runs parallel,

Whispering tales, ancient as a spell.

The Mures River, tranquil and wide,

With graceful currents, it does glide.

Through valleys and meadows, it drifts and flows,

A testament to time, as onward it goes.

Soimos Castle, though hidden from view,

Its spirit lingers, as ancient stones do.

In this scene, a story is unfurled,

A snapshot of a changing world.

The castle's essence, forever near,

Though unseen, it lingers here.

In this black and white tableau,

A timeless tale of long ago.

A.I generated poem. Thanks for the visit and have a nice day.

Get this thing off my back please !!!

This Common Redshank (non-breeding plumage) had flown past me on several occasions with what appeared to be something unnatural on its back.

At first I had assumed it was a mutant mass of feathers or perhaps the result of a healing of an old injury.

Once I managed to capture an image of the bird, it became clear what the object really was: a miniature solar array with attached GPS transponder plus dual antennae.

The bird had also been ringed / tagged, so presumably the GPS transponder was attached at the same time.

The bird appeared to be in excellent health and seemed entirely oblivious to the foreign object on its back; certainly, there was no discernible impact on its overall behaviour nor foraging / flying abilities.

Hopefully, some scientist / ornithologist somewhere is receiving some great data about this particular bird’s activities, movements and migrations throughout East Asia / Australasia !

Thank you for your interest, views, faves, comments and awards ! This image was captured in Hong Kong 香港. (Best viewed on a larger screen.)

It is a nice place to get great views of the lake. There are benches to sit and enjoy the amazing view of the Mondsee lake.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”

― John Lubbock, The Use Of Life

Special thanks to all of you my friends, and I appreciate that you took time to fave and leave so incredible comments!!

I also thank my dearest friend 🌷Isa🌻 www.flickr.com/photos/evaevaevaeva/with/54021709951/ for the beautiful poem!!

In stillness found beneath the tree's embrace,

As John Lubbock notes, we seek our place.

Rest is not idleness, it breathes and inspires,

In nature's calm, we kindle our desires.

Sitting next to Foteini with whispers of the stream,

Is to savor life, to cherish each dream.

For in such moments, we learn to discern,

The use of life is in the joys we earn.

Continuing where I left off at the last photo, this is the walking path along the beach from the parking lot to North Light. You can just discern the lighthouse in the distance. The atmosphere after sunset was unbelievable.

Works best when viewed in large.

This is the 6th shot of the collection “Meteora in Snowstorm” (snowstorm “Bianca,” Mar 2, 2022). It is a shot of Varlaam monastery (aka All Saints') in Meteora, Greece. Now the monastery is less shrouded in fog than earlier, during the storm; so it is more discernible.

The first cells were built on the rock circa 1350 and so was a church dedicated to the Three Hierarchs. The first buildings were expanded into an entire monastery in 1517-8.

When the Five Lords arrived to make their first inspection tour of Jiayi in 1820, the County Magistrate sent men to block the procession’s path. Both sides incensed, neither was willing to give way to the other. It was at this point that Lord Lifu, through the mouth of an illiterate farmer, informed the official that he was obstructing heavenly righteousness and that persistence would only magnify his arrogance. The farmer then proceeded to write in the dirt with a hoe: ‘Heaven’s Terrestrial Inspectors manage the Yin and the Yang. We look to move the good and change the wicked; to augment the true and extinguish ill-fortune.’ The peasant, then demanded the magistrate provide an appropriately literate response – which he, stunned, proved unable to do. The farmer then continued:

’Our inspection tour discerns black from white. Disasters are averted by neither paper offerings nor burning money; not either by ritual sacrifice.’

The magistrate, thus humbled, stepped down from his palanquin and begged forgiveness.

Much later, Lord Lifu’s reprimand to the magistrate was redrafted by Tainan scholar Luo Hsiu-hui as a couplet. The couplet was rendered on stone pillars in characters rendered personally by Yao Pin of Hubei Province. The pillars are now displayed prominently near the temple’s main doors.

A view over Bohemian Switzerland in the early morning.

The mountains are shrouded in a veil of mist, making it almost impossible to discern where one mountain ends and the next begins.

This is also due to the fact that it is still quite dark here above Petrovice.

And so the apparent lake, which is actually a fog-filled valley, stands out even more from the scene.

When the sun rises in just under an hour, it won't be long before it has literally vanished into thin air.

Or, "All for Nothing # 29".

It's World Photo Day today, and what a good time to upload another absolute favourite from Hong Kong. It's like, the whole place in one! Oh I wish I could print out this aspect of print without it being a total nightmare... It has to be so wide to get to the nitty-gritty detail. Meh.

At the time, the two nearby joggers having... jogged-off with only myself and Michael standing against the fence, I felt like everything I was taking in was all for me. No discernible people, just lights and sounds that existed solely for me to experience. It was nice.

Anyway, this is a stitched panorama made up of about 10 photographs, if I remember correctly.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Vivid Sydney, 2024.

Photographed on the opening night of Vivid 2024.

Friday, 24th May, 2024.

Photo taken from the Cahill Walkway, up above Circular Quay Railway Station, at the eastern (Macquarie Street) end.

My Canon EOS 5D Mk IV with the Canon EF 75-3005mm f/4-5.6 lens.

(This lens is NOT well regarded because it is not part of the red-dot L series, but it got the Luna Park sign - and you can discern 'Luna Park' - kilometres away on the other side of the harbour!! - at night-time.)

Processed in Adobe Lightroom and PhotoPad Pro by NCH software.

The Orion constellation is probably the most beautiful and imposing constellation of the winter sky, thanks to its bright stars and characteristic shape. As it is visible from both hemispheres, many ancient people recognized the constellation as a mythical hero or god. Four stars form a quadrilateral, while in the center of it three bright, equidistant stars form the hunter's characteristic belt (visible at the center of the image). The top left star of the quadrilateral is Betelgeuse, a giant red-orange star that is lately in the news as it is dimmer than usual and as it is in an advanced stage of stellar evolution, it can one day become a supernova and become dazzling in our night sky - although its light must travel more than 600 years to reach the Earth.

Underneath Orion’s belt, a diffuse glow is faintly discerned, which with a small telescope is revealed to be a magnificent dust and gas nebula, known as the Great Orion Nebula, a star-forming region about 1500 light-years away from us.

Extending the line formed by the three belt stars downward, we reach Sirius, the brightest star in the whole sky, in the constellation of the Great Dog (one of the two faithful hunter dogs of Orion according to Greek Mythology - Sirius is the bright star at the bottom of the photo between the trees). Its brilliance is partly due to its relatively high luminosity (about 25 times that of our Sun), but also to its relatively short distance to us - about 9 light years.

Sirius culminates (i.e. reaches its maximum height in the south) close to midnight at the New Year Eve (the exact time differs a bit depending on the observers’ longitude), when the nights are usually cold in the northern hemisphere. But one can also observe it at the end of summer, when it rises just before the sun does. So, during the mid-summer days Sirius travels (invisibly) close to the Sun in the sky and as a result many ancient people had associated it with the great summer heat (Dies Caniculares - “Dog Days”) and considered it as an ominous star.

The winter triangle is an unofficial asterism comprised of three bright stars: Orion's Betelgeuse, Sirius of the Great Dog constellation, and the third star is the other hunter's dog, Procyon, which rises before Sirius and announces its arrival (The name Procyon is Greek meaning “before the Dog” - Procyon is the bright star at the lower left of the photo, just to the right of the tree branches).

So, with this winter night sky scene (although captured before dawn at the end of October) I once again wish everyone a Happy New Year full of joyful moments enjoyed and captured - let the stars show you the way! Clear skies to everyone.

A rather precarious seating position for the pilot; his backside is hanging over the void - at least in part.

Designed in 1910, only one Roe Mk IV was ever built, and although it seems to have flown reasonably well (for the time!), it was scrapped after about a year, in 1911. This replica was constructed in the 1960s for the movie 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines' and has been flown regularly by The Shuttleworth Collection ever since.

If you look really closely, the name 'Sir Percy Ware-Armitage' painted on the side by the pilot is just discernable. Sir Percy, played by Terry-Thomas, was the dastardly antagonist in the movie, and upon whom the later cartoon character of Dick Dastardly was based.
