The Bryce Amphitheatre area is the most visited section of Bryce Canyon National Park in the USA. The Inspiration Point offers visitors excellent viewpoint to see the amphitheatre from above. This photograph was taken in the morning, with the sun illuminating the hoodoos from the side. One may discern some of the hoodoos in the background looking like tulip flowers.

Steel Magnolias of Santa Gemita - 061821 - BW-2

I got pretty close to this land monitor (varanus bengalensis) and could see that it was tearing at the ground, presumably seeking a meal. Unfortunately, I couldn't discern just what it was feeding on. That said, these animals will eat almost anything so it could have been grubbing for insects or small vertebrates. Photographed in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka.

Taken near Ladner, British Columbia, Canada.

A dull foggy morning made this little chatterer barely discernible in the wild rose bushes at the edge of the salt marshes. If it had not been for the racket its relatives were making, (there was a family group of five wrens) I would have passed over this bird altogether.

According to the philosopher Zygmunt Bauman, liquid modernity refers to a fluidity that, far from leading us to a "lighter" living, it sends the weight of concreteness away, but doesn't give the counterpart. Where everything is fluid, transitory and without reference, everything "depends on context" and the solid bases to support us are no longer found. In order not to drown, one must learn to discern. Or we'll follow the fate of Sisyphus until the death of everything that exists.

We can see gorgeous views of the surroundings when you are at the top of Mont Saint-Michel.

Here we discover the surrounding countryside, on the left Normandy and on the right Brittany. The Couesnon river in the center marks the historical limit between Normandy and Brittany.

We clearly discern a bridge over the Couesnon river. This is the new dam which has been recently built to prevent silting of Mont Saint-Michel and restore its insularity at Large tides days

This night photograph was taken last week at Nanjing Xuan Wu Lake.

The area has been under small drizzles periodically during the day and there was slight breeze disturbing part of the Lake. This long exposure photograph captured the Ming Dynasty Wall which was illuminated for night visitors.

The trees that lined in front of the Wall and the lights were reflected in the Lake. The outlines of some high-rise buildings outside the Wall could vaguely be discerned.

Best wishes for a relaxing Sunday!

Only just discernible in the far distance is Mynydd Mawr, also affectionately known as Elephant Mountain. You can perhaps see from its faint silhouette how it got the nickname.

So I caved and bought a Lensbaby (just a used one very cheap). So here is an image of my Bradford Pear blossoms from my first shoot. I immediately discerned that it had a pretty steep learning curve. I know it's a controversial lens, but I don't care. It was so fun and I can see places where it will fit into my shooting very nicely.

PS ignore the exif...I forgot to change the info on a non-CPU lens.

"Maybe it's the grand scale. Maybe it's the gold. But when re-assessing The Kiss for Klimt’s 150th birthday, journalist Adrian Brijbassi wrote, "The Kissby Gustav Klimt surpasses expectations," unlike that tiny and underwhelming Mona Lisa.

After throwing shade on the more famous painting, Brijbassi explained, "[The Kiss] does what a great piece of art is supposed to do: Hold your gaze, make you admire its aesthetic qualities while trying to discern what’s beyond its superficial aspects."

Take that, Mona." mental floss

Songs that play by themselves in my head

Playbacks of performances in my mind

BY ASTALDO ELVEN

Whenever I was upset

They soothed, they calmed

My piano was my pride and glory

The scores were my challenges

To my brain the music were tonic

And the imaginations were balloons that never burst

My piano was my nurse and doctor

One of the best remedy for

All my sorrows, my frustrations and the

Lending ear of all my joy, my thrills.

My piano taught me to listen

Attentively, independently and learn to be

My very own teacher and learn to discern

The pros and cons of me.

I feel for my piano, I feel it deep inside

Everlasting love, undying passion

My piano became part of my life

Without it, happiness is a struggle.

Quite a well resolved image. The words ‘Trestle here’ directly below the 4 in the serial number can easily be discerned. Also, the left main wheel can be seen to still be spinning from the take-off run as it retracts.

Similar in appearance to the Curlew, but slightly smaller. Whimbrel has a similar downcurved bill, but this is slightly shorter than that of the Curlew. When seen well, distinctive "striped" head pattern can be discerned - formed by a dark crown, with a pale streak through the centre, a pale supercillium and a dark eyestripe. The call is also one of the best ways of finding a flock of migrating Whimbrels passing overhead.

A rapid, monotone whistle - "whit-tit-tit-tit-tit-tit…", very unlike the call of a Curlew. Frequently heard as birds fly high overhead. Also occasionally a rapid bubbling song, quite similar to Curlew's

You're paralyzed, breathe your disguise

You feed on the lies that they tell you

Got to break away from the numbing pain

Succumb to the rage that's inside you

You're hypnotized, demoralized

Believe every line that they sell you

Start channelling whatever will remains

Discern from what's fiction and what is true

Open your eyes

Open your eyes

Open your eyes

See through the disguise

Won't you open your eyes!

You've lost your sense from the emptiness

You do what the headlines compel you

Become whole again and let the war begin

Destroy the veneer that surrounds you

There's no defense for your recklessness

You stare as the proof lies before you

Why can't you see, are you afraid to be

Exposed to the demons around you?

Open your eyes

Open your eyes

Open your eyes

See through the disguise

Won't you open your eyes!

Open your eyes

Open your eyes

See through the disguise

Won't you open your eyes!

In a world you cannot hide

And the end is comin'

For the lemmings standing in line

Overcome it

Let the fury build inside

It could all be broken

Saltmarsh mallow (Kosteltzkya pentacarpos; syn. K. virginica) is a member of the hibiscus family and a common occurrence in salt marsh and freshwater wetland habitats throughout Florida and the Eastern Seaboard. This widely distributed species goes largely unnoticed, however, when not in bloom.

Saltmarsh mallow is a deciduous perennial that emerges each spring and produces a thin weak stem that eventually reaches a height of up to 6 feet. The thin stems and elongated diamond-shaped leaves are sometimes difficult to discern within the adjacent foliage unless the plant is encountered along stream edges where it may stand alone.

Blooming can occur during most months from late spring through fall. The individual flowers are small by native hibiscus standards; 1-2 inches across, but a wonderful rich pink in color. These flowers are attractive nectar sources for a wide variety of pollinators.

Saltmarsh mallow needs wet soils to prosper, but given these, it can be a handsome addition to a mixed wildflower planting when cultivated and maintained a bit. Use it as an accent within a pond or marsh edge planting and use several together to maximize the impact of its blooms. This species is frequently grown by nurseries that specialize in wetland mitigation plantings, so it may not be difficult to locate. Individuals do not get much larger over the years - the way many species in the Hibiscus genus do, but they produce large numbers of seed and often spread this way when conditions are right.

I found this one growing wild along the "Jungle Trail" on the East Coast of Central Florida.

Facts:

Identification of the eland is difficult to discern from other antelope species. However, they are the largest among them, beaten only by the kudu.

The average lifespan of eland is 15-20 years. When it captivity, some records indicate that they can live up to 25 years comfortably.

They have some of the biggest horns seen on an antelope species, reaching up to 26 inches long. Though the females are smaller in every sense, they actually can reach up to 27 inches long with their horns.

These spiral-horned mammals are not aggressive. In fact, males don’t even become competitive or hostile during mating because there is little competition.

They're so small Olymp had a difficult time getting a picture sufficiently clear to post. The tiny flowers of Nailwort are 2-3 mm wide. But the small plants are tiny flashes of red in the otherwise stil drab and dull dunes of Amsterdam's Waterleidingduinen, our source of drinkable water.

'Nailwort' is for the use to which our pretty plant was once put: to sooth whitlows - you know, those little red striate skin blemishes sometimes near your finger- or toenails.

The plant is covered with sticky glands. I don't know for wat purpose. I tried a taste, but could discern nothing either sweet or otherwise. Perhaps my tongue isn't fine-tuned enough...

Yes, those are crystals of sand stuck to some of the glands.

A Venetian Canal Scene. I wonder if the Venice aficionados and connoisseurs might discern the subtle intimations of Venetian art-history influences that I have drawn on in making this photograph?

Photographed eight months after temporary “Thistle Lake” had been drained from behind a massive mudslide, Amtrak’s California Zephyr traverses the Thistle Line Change, a route less than a year old at the time, on June 13, 1984. It was a treat to catch train activity along the new line that summer. You can discern the old lake shoreline where greenery meets dead vegetation, an area once flooded by Soldier and Thistle creeks.

Worldwide, it is estimated that there are about 650,000 Sandhill Cranes; 450,000-500,000 being Lessers. "The Merced NWR hosts the largest wintering concentration of Lesser Sandhill Cranes in the Pacific Flyway with as many as 20,000 cranes using the Refuge." Source: Merced NWR online brochure. "It takes a patient and sharp eye to discern the difference between Greater and Lesser Sandhill Cranes. They have a similar body shape, plumage and color. Lesser Sandhill Cranes stand four feet high, with a four-inch, dagger-like bill. The greater is five feet tall, with a five-inch bill. These sub-species both migrate northward. The lesser breeds in northern Canada and Alaska, and the greater breeds in northeastern California, the Northwest and Great Lakes states. Greater sandhill cranes are threatened due to the loss of wetlands." Source: cranefestival.com

Can you barely discern the mortals strolling by the beach? Yes, they are humans, not ants! Their figures’ tiniest size creates a sense of scale needed to comprehend the mere vastness of the sea and sky captured in the frame.

This is the North Sea that is only a small part of the Atlantic ocean. So, this shot is nothing but a glimpse at the enormous vastness of the latter. The water-edge pictorially defines the ocean as finite.

Not far from the beaten path, away from the rush and noise of tourists and traffic sits a small garage. The swooshing sound of passing automobiles has given way to the wandering waves of the Pacific crashing on the beach. Between the waves you might hear birds singing and the swish of sandpaper bringing life back to fiberglass hidden under neglect or passion. The faint odor of resin and oil that permeates from the soiled walls is barely discernible as the warm and heavy sea-breeze wafts through through the tall grass and tropical flowers, squeezes through the large, open door and focuses it's energy on the creation at hand..

Here one can get lost in the task at hand to focus on every minute detail and live completely in the present or journey to other worlds, past, present or future.

This male Lapland Longspur in prime breeding plumage rested on a snowbank along the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway in Canada’s Northwest Territories. This species has a circumpolar breeding range, so is found in the northern summer on the tundra of Eurasia as well as North America (as the first part of the common name suggests). The long hind claws (“spurs”) can be discerned in this image.

Another in the store front series. Kind of strange that the marquee above is obscure, and there's no clear indication of the name of the store. Only noticed when posting that the words "dry goods design" are barely discernible in the reflection on the window at right, and Google Maps confirms that's the name. Human observers will not make the robot auto-tagger's mistake of mis-assigning the type of shop.

This is the second of three shots of Georgina, the World's Coolest Bear. Here she has gone from patient and watchful to very active, having plunged into the water for a salmon. This time she came up empty. No matter how docile these bears may look, they are wild animals that can spring into action in a heartbeat.

They're also highly intelligent and able to discern human intent. Fearful? They will know it. Relaxed? They know that, too. And they can smell whatever is in your pack for lunch or a snack, so don't bring salmon or tuna sandwiches or sardines into bear country. I am positive that Georgina remembered the scent of those photographers who visited her regularly during salmon spawning season. Perhaps some of the other bears did, too. The key to getting along with bears is don't surprise them, and don't carry anything that may tempt them. I ate a lot of dry crackers during my visits. Bears will gladly eat those, too, but they need the nutrients that salmon provide, and so that remained their focus. We all carried bear spray but didn't come close to using it.

This image was the result of experimentation with intentional camera movement while at the beach during blue hour. The dark midground is the ocean, while the brighter areas are the sky and its reflection against the wet sand. With camera motion spanning about 10 degrees over 1/4 sec, it is still possible to discern clouds and waves amidst the abstraction.

Nigritella rhellicani (Orchidaceae) 177 21

Nigritella rhellicani (common name: dark vanilla orchid or black vanilla orchid) is a European species of orchid.

This species grows 5–22 centimeters high, with a dense, globose to the cylindrical inflorescence of red-brown to chocolate-brown flowers with a chocolate-like aroma. Some plants, especially in the south of the species' range have noticeably paler flowers

Nigritella rhellicani is indisputably the most widespread and frequently encountered of the seventeen species currently comprising the N. nigra group. Its range takes it from the western Alps, eastwards to the Carpathians, and although unconfirmed, probably into Russia. It can be abundant in its favored locations, where it grows in short alpine turf as low as 1,000 meters up to a recently recorded altitude of over 3,000 meters. N. rhellicani together with N. austriaca are colloquially known as the "Black Vanilla Orchids" and are frequently found growing alongside each other. In typical plants there are easily discerned distinguishing characteristics, unfortunately however the natural variation within both species can often render accurate identification all but impossible except to the professional scientific eye.
