After 10 days of gloomy weather I expected more of the same on the first day of my weekend, Fri 4.24, however it turned out to be a spectacular day. As luck would have it I had chores to do and wouldn’t be able to get out for any pictures until Saturday. Looking at the weather forecasts it appeared I might be in luck as my weather app was showing another day of clear skies. As it turns out that is exactly what happened. After waking up and finishing up my final chores and did some checking and discovered the south freight out of Fairbanks was running very late. The train was re-crewed at Hurricane, MP 281.4, and had departed at 0830. It was currently 0915 and my goal was to catch the train at MP 206.4 as they emerged from the woods with Denali standing tall in the background. I live in South Anchorage, roughly at MP 105, so I needed to go north 101 miles before the freight traveled the 76 miles south to arrive at the same destination. By the time I left my house it was 0920. It was a calculated risk but I was fairly confident I could beat the train here. I also knew the train had to traverse a few slow orders so that was in my favor. Luck was on my side, but just barely, I arrived at my desired location at 1100 and the train rolled past at 1105. Pretty good timing I say. As this was the only train on the system, I headed for home. Of course that was the same direction the train was heading so I was able to capture a few more shots along the way. This shot shows Denali and Hunter with the train. Earlier I posted a shot with just Denali and the train. I think I like this shot a bit better. At 20’308 tall Denali stands tall and dominates the background.in either view.

At the moment, I often go to the Haslacher Weiher near Aulendorf in the mornings. Here my two favorite motifs - fog and reflections - can be realized in one picture. That morning there was initially no fog at all when I got there about three quarters of an hour before sunrise. But after a while it moved in from the southwest, descended and enveloped everything. At times the trees could no longer be seen at all, then the colors of the sunrise shimmered through again. The sun rises in November almost exactly at a right angle to the direction of view, which creates the color gradient from cold to warm

Leica Mini-II
Agfa Vista 200 (aka Fuji 200N)
My friend Stephen found a Leica Mini-II ("badge-engineered" Minolta point-and-shoot 35mm camera from the 1990s) at an estate sale. I traded him a sandwich and a roll of film for it.
I recently became affianced to the woman standing in the circle.
This object, whilst decorative, is almost entirely useless. The hygrometer is vague, the clock’s hour hand broke after 6 weeks so hangs by gravity, and the thermometer is inflated (especially in the sun). But it shows “trends”, ie. Direction of Travel…
Our patio, July 2022.
(Incidentally, at time of shooting it is very hot here in the South Eastern UK, not quite what this is showing but still around 35 celsius and rising. Very uncomfortable).

Spring, Little River, Tennessee.
Fresh water, clear and fast, moves through the steep hillsides, heading towards Metcalf Bottoms. It's spring in the Smokies, new leaves are still wrinkled green claws, and flowers adorn the branches and flesh out on hillsides. Here on the banks, the white noise of the river is the only audio I hear--no phones, no questions, no cacophony of machines. The change from the barreness of winter is dramatic. Small wonder that spring is connected with love. Life is new , the air is fragrant and fresh, color is intense after the long brown months. Spring makes the blood quicken, like the water rushing by me. I wish I could stop it here, hold it, make it last. But seasons are time, on the move like the river. Dogwood arms usher it ahead in the direction of flow. I take a deep breath, inhaling hope and anticipation, and head downstream.

suddenly, they all looked in the same direction, did they hear me come to the studio? LOL
There is like an expectancy tension in these Daffodils?

Here is another 2019 favorite just now getting added to Flickr:
So you know I love street running trackage (who doesn't?!) and Pan Am has one tiny piece in Massachusetts that I've long known about but didn't know how to shoot.
In South Lawrence Pan Am still runs on a mile or so of the long gone Lowell and Lawrence railroad to reach an industrial track. Near the end they run down the side of and through one lane of Glenn St. which they then swing across sharply to reach into the park. Now only one customer remains there, the Whitemore Company.
Whittemore receives a switch only about once a week from Pan Am who brings in loads of perlite. These carloads originate on the old Rio Grande in Antonito, Colorado which I think is a pretty cool personal connection.
Anyway, catching this move is exceedingly difficult because it only runs once a week on no particular schedule, and Lawrence is a to far in the wrong direction go to in a morning after work and most of the Pan Am locals based there are Sun-Thu jobs. But one job, LA-1 works on Fridays so I knew it was theoretically possible.
So after getting off work and doing my turnover Fri morning I still had no plan what I was going to do and the weather was awful not planning to clear up until noontime. Many mornings I chat with the friendly BO-1 crew that goes on duty in the front office at BET (Keolis let's Pan Am share our office space and fax machine, etc). Those boys know I'm a foamer and I always ask if there is anything cool going on. They told that LA-1 was showing cars for the perlite as they called it and suggested I give it a try.
So off I went! I ended up sitting in the rain until nearly 10 AM till they started switching and it was about 1145 till they finally called for the light to cross over and head to the branch. So by this time the rain had stopped and things were looking up. And to make things interesting they took two units this time...one on each end so they didn't have to ride the shove over a mile and that resulted in the two being back to back when they came out with the empties.
I took over 400 shots just (and got some Amtrak, MBTA, and one road freight) while in the area. So naturally it was hard to narrow it down to a favorite...and frankly I've not even gone through all of them yet.
But here are four I really like and wanted to share right off for your consideration. Hope you like them.
Another Friday...another ultra rare bucket list shot. I still don't actually believe I got this move. It's just soo cool! 2019 sure is doing well so far to compete with 2018 when it comes to foam opportunities!
