A Hindu religious ascetic (Sadhu) starting his day by taking a holy dip at Gangasagar on the Makara Sankranti day
Gangasagar pilgrimage and fair, held annually, is the second largest congregation of mankind (more than 0.8 million this year) after the holy Kumbha Mela. Gangasagar finds mention in sacred texts and ancient scriptures of Hindu mythology including the two great Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
The river Ganga (Ganges) which originates in the Gangotri glacier in the snow clad high Himalayas, descends down the mountains, reaches the plains, flows through ancient pilgrimage sites, and drains into the Bay of Bengal. A dip in the ocean, where the Ganga meets the sea is considered to be of great religious significance particularly on the Makara Sankranti day (January 14/15), when the sun makes a transition to Capricorn from Sagittarius. Almost a million of Hindu devotees from all over India gather at Gangasagar for a holy dip and perform rituals and prayer (puja) with a belief that it will cleanse and purify their souls.

We went out at about 7:00 in the morning to take these, and it was cooold.
We kinda just drove around town looking for spots to take pictures.
I wish the water was more visible here, especially since she just about froze her toes off.

visiting varanasi and the famous ghats on the banks of the ganges has left an impression that has not quite sunk in yet, but I am a little sad to admit that sofar it is mostly the filth and chaos of the city that I remember mostly.

Spotted this snowy egret flying back and forth "dip fishing" and saw an opportunity to practice my BIF tracking skills. I shot a dozen or so bursts as it flew about hoping to catch a nice shot or two. This is my fav.
One of the dips is anchovy sauce.
The other is a mixture of mayonnaise and two types of Japanese seasoning, yuzu-kosho and ponzu-shoyu.
Yuzu-kosho is a paste which contains yuzu (a kind of citrus), chilli and salt. Ponzu-
shoyu is a citrus seasoned soy sauce.

Indy's brief time as Leroy is now over. The funny thing is they thought Indy was a lot younger than he is. In 4 weeks, Indy will be 12 years old on the 19th of March.
Today our treat of John and Kira's chocolate dipped figs arrived by air from Philadelphia. Each Spanish chocolate fig is filled by hand with 64% Valrhona whiskey ganache then dipped in a thin layer of dark 64% chocolate. The Calabacita variety of fig is grown by a family owned company in "Los Llanillos" in the village of Almoharin located in the Extremadura region of Spain. These are such a special treat at this time of year.
In addition the table runner was made for us by a dear friend for our Thanksgiving.
