On our first visit to Radio Road this year, we spotted this juvenile Forster's Tern. The Forster's Tern breeds primarily in marshes and winters along the coasts. The comma-shaped black ear patch in winter plumage is distinctive, but some other plumages are so varied as to be downright confusing. The Tern breeds in loose colonies, with spacing dictated by arrangement of good nesting sites. It can be aggressive toward other birds in the vicinity of its nest.

Watching the sunset is an important ritual for an astronomer -- perhaps something primal, but more probably because the weather comes from the west, and those clouds willl dictate how the following night will go. Clouds aren't good, but they do make a sunset !

Whether you need to get new energocrystals for work or take your girl to holiday - this is you daily spaceship.

Although the Ladybug is a compact design, it is equipped with powerful sensor array, ordinary and FTL engines, cargo ramp and utility vehicle. In the interior you find facilities for long travels.

I always wanted a "personal" spaceship with proper equipment and a sleek shape, that would take care of its crew on long missions. I had thad brick-built M_Tron logo on my table for some time and finally, this is where it ended. The U.F.O. panels pretty much dictate the shape and also Ebon Hawk (SW:KotOR) was on my mind when I was drawing the sketches.

The pair of wells, known as the ‘Initiation Wells’ or ‘Inverted Towers’, consist of ‘winding stair’ architecture, which carries symbolic meaning including the death/rebirth allegory common to many hermetic traditions.

One of the wells contains nine platforms, which are said to be “reminiscent of the Divine Comedy by Dante and the nine circles of Hell, the nine sections of Purgatory and the nine skies which constitute Paradise.” A smaller well, called the “Unfinished Well,” contains a set of straight staircases, connecting the ring-shaped floors to one another. It is believed that the spacing of the landings, as well as the number of steps in between were dictated by Masonic principles.

These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites. The tunnels described above connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park.

I've photographed the Wilkinson Eyre 'Bridge of Aspiration' before but as I passed by during the recent 'London 24in24' event the low sunlight produced some dramatic lighting.

Unfortunately for the first time ever I had to leave just over twelve hours into the 24hr event but a big thanks to Will Cheung (and Annie) for organising it and fingers crossed we'll get to do it all again next Summer.

For those anywhere near London, you can find details of the next London Flickr Group Photowalk on Saturday July 20th here : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577219...

From the Wilkinson Eyre website, "Twisting high above Floral Street in Covent Garden, the Bridge of Aspiration provides the dancers of the Royal Ballet School with a direct link to the Grade I listed Royal Opera House. The design addresses a series of complex contextual issues and is legible both as a fully integrated component of the buildings it links and as an independent architectural element.

The skewed alignment and different levels of the landing points dictate the form of the crossing, which is geometrically and structurally simple. An aluminium spine beam supports a concertina of 23 square portals with glazed intervals."

So I guess now that I’ve finally shot the famous tree in Portland’s Japanese Garden, I can call myself an official card-carrying Oregon photographer.

I’m always conflicted about shooting iconic spots like this. You go in fully aware that the internet is teeming with pictures of it and that there is exactly ZERO chance of being able to do something unique. That’s especially true with this tree given its location. But I’ve always wanted to see the Japanese Garden at the peak of fall color, which it definitely was and I figured since I was there I better go ahead and shoot it.

The drill is that there’s really only one angle to shoot it from, and there’s room for 2 photographers (maybe 3 if they squeeze) at a time to shoot it. In addition to the 2-3 people shooting seriously, there’s always another handful of people leaning in with cell phones. A queue of between 2-6 people are usually lurking around waiting for a spot to open up. It doesn’t take a long time to shoot, so courtesy dictates you get your shot then clear out to give somebody else a chance. There are good and bad light times – this one was shot around 10:30am.

The good news is that situations like this almost always turn into a good chance for camaraderie among photogs. Everybody understands the situation, so it just becomes something you laugh at together and have fun with. You always run into other people that you automatically have a lot in common with just because of the situation.

It was fun – I’m glad I shot it. This might even turn into a metal print on my wall.

Your mood should not dictate your manners.

Seen these children from my balcony with fireworks. Instinct dictated me to shoot (photograph) them under the low-light condition of the area as this is not a scene that I see every night from my window.

Goodnight my friends. I promise to get back on you tomorrow.

Abrivado of adolescents in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence:

The abrivado turns into a bandido:

Bandido is a Provençal tradition which means expelling. Originally, tradition dictated that a gang of young people would launch out following the horsemen with the intention of escaping a bull from the group which was taking him under guard. To do so, they grabbed its tail or clung to the horns to tire it out and finally strike it down.

According to Wikipedia, Nowadays, each of these terms designates a Provencal and Languedoc bullfighting tradition of simulating these transfers of bulls by releasing them into the closed streets of a town or village.

------------------------------------------------

Creating art out of art, my take on a fine piece of street art. The toning was more dictated by the street lighting than me, picture was taken at night. The actual piece is in black and white (I think, was quite hard to tell).

Dhanuskodi. This was the extreme point that one could walk that day as the tide dictates the length of this once buzzing but now ruined town; the shoreline changes wildly, to the extent of few square kilometers, during November, December many areas get submerged. Thalai mannar (Sri Lanka) is 15- 20 kilometers away from this point, for a long time this has been the landing zone for thousands and thousands of my Tamil brothers and sisters seeking refuge. The horrors they have been through before escaping the civil war and the horrors they undergo at the hand of authority once they land here are gut-wrenchingly painful.

Imagine holding your life and your two little kid's life in your hands, escaping a war that has claimed one too many lives of your family members and came pretty close to claiming yours too, on a Kalla thoni (sea coyote) with a belief that better life awaits you. But what do you get? You get dropped off on one of the seven islands, near the main island, in middle of the night, that disappear and appear due to variations of the tide. Awaiting cost guard to get you out; hours later, you walk few kilometers, with hunger and dehydration, reach the checkpoint where officials in Khaki openly steal that gold chain around your neck, which you sincerely believed would provide food for your kids for a week.

Note: This is a pilgrimage group just exploring the island. My story has nothing to do them but everything to do with me.

Since circumstances dictate that we can't get out as much as we would all like to shoot, I decided it would be fun to go back and rediscover photos I may have overlooked, or revisit some photos and have a fresh take at editing them.

I originally took this picture on January 3rd, 2019. I used a vintage Minolta Rokkor-X 50mm f/1.4 lens. I never fail to be astonished by how tack sharp these old lenses can be.

I decided to go for more of a moody black and white shot, that I accomplished using lightroom and Silver Efex Pro 2.

Thanks everybody for your comments and faves, much appreciated! Hope you have a great day!

One aperture with a view North commands a view from the stone sculpted safety of Clickimin Broch. This view could have seen friends and foes approaching, seasons turning and fortunes waxing and waning. From a few perspectives the photographs offer amazing insight into the strength and security of the broch that towered above the loch casting great reflections and basking in the light from the waters which brought life into the fortified structures here and the loch would also have given amazing views and watertight defences.

An amazing fortified house preserved from the past and still a part of now standing tall and proud with a rebuild. The shape and size of any broch is dictated by the need for it and the ability of the builders. Here there appears to have been an amazing development made for strength and for beauty. Once the tower rose into sky and released the smoking signs of life, now the bright preserved ruin remains as a celebration of earlier ways of living.

SHICHIGOSAN

Shichi-Go-San (七五三 seven-five-three) is a traditional rite of passage and festival day in Japan for three and seven year-old girls and three and five year-old boys, held annually on November 15.

Shichi-Go-San is said to have originated in the Heian Period amongst court nobles who would celebrate the passage of their children into middle childhood. The ages three, five and seven are consistent with Japanese numerology, which dictates that odd numbers are lucky. The practice was set to the fifteenth of the month during the Kamakura Period.

As kids we were sometimes (very sometimes actually, times were tough after the war) treated to a "bokkepoot" (translated "buckleg"), a cookie with chocolate at both ends, nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokkenpootje

Such a delicacy one would eat slowly to lengthen the enjoyment. This croc seems to have a similar challenge with his "bokkepoot", he took a long time to get this stiff "poot" through his throat, for reasons different from ours when we were young, I think. (And for the Dutch purists, the new spelling dictates "bokkenpoot" because many bucks have legs or because one buck has more then one leg, take your pick).

“The choice to train one’s memory or not, for the ancients and medievals, was not a choice dictated by convenience: it was a matter of ethics. A person without a memory, if such a thing could be, would be a person without moral character and, in a basic sense, without humanity. Memoria refers not to how something is communicated, but to what happens once one has received it, to the interactive process of familiarizing—or textualizing—which occurs between oneself and others’ words in memory”

From Skyscrapernews.com, "The use of the portholes as windows creates a deliberate ambiguity about the building making it impossible to actually gauge the number of floors inside. These windows in turn dictate the floor-to-floor dimensions. They are a surprisingly tall 4.547 metres for a college in order to accommodate two rows of 1.8 metre diameter windows.

Through experimenting with his style, he found a unique lens combination that works for him. Conventional wisdom dictates that wide angle lenses are best for landscapes, and longer lenses are preferable for portraits, but Konsta reverses this. He shoots most of his wildlife portraits on a NIKKOR 14-24mm, f/2.8 and will choose a longer lens for a landscape, such as a NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G.

Went by work yesterday to dictate reports and stopped by my favorite chinaberry tree. Okay, it's the only chinaberry tree I know, but it really is my favorite.

These yellowish berries are poisonous to humans, but not to most birds who pick at them all winter.

Wikipedia says, "The fruit is a drupe, marble-sized, light yellow at maturity, hanging on the tree all winter, and gradually becoming wrinkled and almost white." Could be describing me…

This tree and its shadows figure prominently in many of my photos. It looks cool and is right where I hang. At least until I wrinkle and turn almost white...

"Photography is a craft that is acquired over many years!"

And the camera is only the tool!

When not 'dictated' by a client, I take images that come out of my brain, the birth of the idea, the development of it, my vision and the creation, my enjoyment and the challenge, the hype and the anticipation, the struggle and disappointment of the failures, the gathering of your courage to try again... the stamina, the madness some love to call passion?

The playing with light, to me, the ultimate high, I don't need anything else. Once the image is there, I'm content, and if it 'inspires' others, releases an emotion, that's wonderful!

And I've seen how my photos have 'inspired' many!

I'm not stupid to think that everybody is going to like, let alone understand my image, but I can easily live with that, because I do not have that expectation!

I, in the first place, have to be happy with it, the quality, the composition, EVERYTHING, it has to be immaculate, I have to stand by it 100% or the outside world will NEVER see it!

That goes for my pro AND my free work (what you see here).

I wouldn't have it any other way.

I hope that you enjoyed my 'rave'?

Take care, all the best and above all... enjoy your photography.

If the day comes I don't enjoy it anymore... I'll GIVE AWAY all my gear (it's a lot, gathered over the years, please don't hold your breath, heeeee), M, (*_*)

Still experimenting with light sculpting. This is an old dictating machine - it records on a thin, green vinyl disc. I am fascinated with old (ancient) dictating machines. This model actually played a key role in the Joan Crawford film, Sudden Fear.

There is a laundry list of things that plaque the Flickr experience. We could start with broken server albeit not completely broken it’s is by anyone’s estimation indeed still broken. Makes you wonder who’s manning the site? Is there any quality control or oversite at all in any sector?

The fact that administrators of groups can dictate just how many groups a person can add their images is obnoxious. It’s not a matter of too much exposure, but rather fewer images the administrators have to govern/proof. The members are here for the sole purpose of exposure. Exposure here on Flickr is how I got published. It was images I have in my photo stream that journalists, publishers, needed as a visual in a piece that is going to print soon. e.g. magazines, journals, essays, state or federal handbooks, etc...The imagines of mine that I made a profit on were found right here on Flickr when they did a search on Google. Flickr is a platform for those who wish to exhibit their photographic work for any one of a hundred reasons and they are all deserving of and add influence to the body of work that this platform offers. That fact that there supposedly was a vote on the idea of placing limits on any particular image is to say everyone thinks the same and wants the same thing and and everyone will settle for less. Opting in on placing walls and closed doors is the same as stifling a persons talent, their profession, their ability to be paid for their work, clouding the dream of an ambitious young photographer or perhaps aspiring to be one. Because the scope of the reasons is so vast makes it even more difficult to fathom that the vast majority of the members would intentionally vote to place limits on exposure. I say this assuming there was a fair vote because I heard that indeed a site wide vote had taken place. If the vote was site wide but limited to only administrators then there you have it. The administrators are clearly governing the whole Flickr site and that’s power shifted to them during turbulent financial times at Yahoo/Flickr. When they ban you from a group it is 98% of the time without a reason and a block will be put in place so there will be further discussion. Which is to say the member is not deserving of a proper reason is silenced not to be heard of or seen again. That’s the kind of behavior a person who wishes to be in a position of power over another will eventually exhibit. The end result will be silence that’s what cowards do...it’s an easy out for those who have power over another.

Following the Series 1 there was a transitional series of cars built in 1967–68 as model year 1968 cars, unofficially called "Series 1½." Due to American pressure the new features were not just open headlights, but also different switches (black plastic rocker switches as opposed to the Series 1 toggle switches), de-tuning (using two Zenith-Stromberg carburetters instead of the original three SUs) for US models, ribbed cam covers painted black except for the top brushed aluminum ribbing, hood frames on the OTS that have two bows, and other changes.

Series 1½ cars also have twin cooling fans and adjustable seat backs. The biggest change between 1961-1967 Series 1 E-Types and the 1968 Series 1.5 was the reduction in the number of carburetors from 3 to just 2, resulting in a loss in horsepower from 265 to 246 and a loss in torque

Series 2 features were gradually introduced into the Series 1, creating the unofficial Series 1½ cars, but always with the Series 1 body style. Changing US safety laws dictated that from 1968 the lack of headlight covers and change in dash switch design in the "Series 1.5" of 1968.

Only model year 1968 qualify as Series 1.5 E Types. ..

I was in Bombo for sunrise yesterday. The Bombo rocks are the usual Bombo rocks, but I was lucky to have spotted these weeds. I love the soft quality of our nature , for its soothing effect on our soul

RE: In Case You've Forgotten

[As dictated and performed by Donny Hathaway, 1945 - 1979]

Someday We'll All Be Free

Hang onto the world as it spins around.

Just don't let the spin get you down.

Things are moving fast.

Hold on tight and you will last.

Keep your self-respect, your manly pride..

Get yourself in gear,

Keep your stride.

Never mind your fears.

Brighter days will soon be here.

Take it from me someday we'll all be free (Yeah)

Keep on walking tall, hold you head up high.

Lay your dreams right up to the sky.

Sing your greatest song.

And you'll keep going, going on.

Take it from me someday we'll all be free (Yeah)

(Hey) Just wait and see someday we'll all be free. (Yeah)

Take it from me, Someday we'll all be free.

(It won't be long) Take it from me someday we'll all be free.

Take it from me, take it from me, take it from me.

[Special Note From Mo 2009: This ONE project gave me new respect for the following: 1) TRULY talented Flickr friends and the patience they show to get the right shot (I took FIFTY with my punkass phone to get the one on the right I sorta like; 2) Baby photographers and their prop managers everywhere; and 3) The little guy on the left, who allowed me to remove him from the frame he has shared with a picture of his late birth mother - taken years before he was born - for over 40 years long enough to see this project through....]

My best friend told me that she talked to my mom before she was admitted in the hospital. She said my mom is really proud of me because I have become to be a strong and independent girl... That no one can dictate and will dictate what I wil be passionate about... That I am a go-getter to my goals. She also said my words slash like a two-edged sword at times when I want things to be fair and right.

So, yes my mother knew me well even we were afar...

I am the Bloodmoon's daughter...

Ink and oil pastel, to be of form yet dictating its existence.

It's not everyday you find a butterfly walking on the ground. My instinct dictated to reach for the macro lens, which later became a decision I questioned.

As the name suggests, a butter-fly, should be flying, not walking. Perhaps this behaviour is normal, honestly I don't know, but something felt off. And the worst part is I didn't trust that feeling.

Honouring my expedience, I snapped away, working the angles, playing with the light. As 'fun' as it was, the lingering feeling in my stomach was growing and it became harder to ignore.

Taking a step back and observing this butter-walk, I saw its weakness, its struggle. Although it was walking, it wasn't doing so with much grace.

The more I felt into the situation the clearer it became. This creature of God was in need of my help. One of the many voices in my head, fortunately a loving one, told me it was dehydrated. Trusting that guidance, I shared with this butter-walk a coconut I was enjoying. Perhaps the sugars and electrolytes would hydrate this poor creature and it could return to its original state, its original creation, a butter-fly.

At first, Shelly seemed confused, 'to drink or not to drink?' I heard her think.

Maybe the bond of trust between us was broken, after all, I did take advantage of her. After moving Shelly into the shade, I left. I couldn't help but feel me being there was adding to her suffering.

Later that day, I went to check on her. She was gone.

What to think about this? Did a bird end her suffering? Is she spreading her wings? I don't know. And it pisses me off that I don't know.

Although a lesson was learnt, did an animal really have to suffer?
