This colorless synthetic diamond from Apollo Diamond may pose a bit of a challenge to the African warlords and the De Beers cartel.

This diamond has the same atomic structure as a mined diamond, and is therefore optically, chemically and physically identical. But Apollo plans to get the cost down to $10/carat with high volume manufacturing.

It is grown one carbon atom at a time in a customized CVD (chemical vapor deposition) process. A perfect seed crystal starts the process (over time, Apollo has enlarged the “seed” to wafer scale). The seed is placed in a microwave chamber with a hydrogen + methane plasma heated to 1300 degrees that rains reactive carbon down onto the seed, growing ~1 carat per 12 hours.

Although the manufacturing process should produce diamonds with fewer flaws than mined diamonds, this early diamond has some defects that I could only see with the macro lens (inclusions and a crown notch. I’m just happy to have a version with personality. =)

It is 8mm wide by 2mm deep. Right now the 2mm depth is the critical manufacturing limit, and it affects the ability to do a standard brilliant diamond cut. So this one is flat and wide. But they can make sheets of diamond with this thickness. Imagine a diamond window pane, or semiconductor wafers that can run at 81 Ghz without elaborate cooling.

A grey ghost on a grey day generated a large following of fans of train #246 back around Milwaukee, but not so much here. It didn't set any speed records getting out of the city, so I pulled into here to nab him splitting the searchlights for the long gone diamond on the former Milwaukee Road C&M sub. This beast was set up 2x1x0 with 128 loads and 56 empties that stretched back over 18k feet at 10k plus tons. The NS 9820 was second out and the KCS 4184 was buried 2/3's of the way back in the train. The 4569 was delivered to the TFM in August of 2000 just as you see here, with the KCS adding their markings when they acquired the TFM.

The ring that makes her my fiancee, I suppose. Its story isn't exactly very interesting because there isn't much of one. However, I picked out this ring when she didn't know about it. In fact, I sort of lucked into the fact that she really liked this cut of diamond and the white gold and the little baguette diamonds off to the side that I didn't notice at first.

I know, I thought the same thing. She's just saying that because you got that ring and it fit perfectly. I, eventually, came to realize that she was telling the truth and that she wasn't trying to protect my feelings. At this point, even if she did come clean, it wouldn't matter! The fact that she would have worn it for so long without liking it speaks volumes.

Soppy love stories behind us now, lights were set opposing each other to illuminate the entire ring. Nothing too fancy!

UPDATE: Hey, kids, well this blew up! I just wanted to let you know that she said yes years ago! We've been waiting to have the wedding of our dreams and that's going to take a lot of scratch. When we have that kind of money, we'll seal the deal but for now we've just been holding on to the long engagement plan.

All sandwiched and ready to quilt...

On display at the Natural History Museum in London, this is one of the most comprehensive collections of coloured diamonds in the world.

The collection started in 1980 when Alan Bronstein, an American diamond consultant, fell under the spell of a sun-drenched yellow diamond. Over the years he and his partner Harry Rodman built up a stunning collection to represent the full spectrum of the gem's colours in nature. Today, they are still collecting.

"I am inspired by the variety of colours, which remind me of the aurora borealis, which suddenly light up the northern sky, and somehow, I wanted to hold onto that feeling"

Harry Rodman, 1986
