Some of the local routes around Hastings certainly have some challenging terrain none more so than that of route 28 and the climb on Wellington Road out of the town in a Trident is certainly something to be experienced!
Having tackled that climb already, Magicbus liveried Stagecoach South East 17663 V163 DFT is seen here being dwarfed by pylons on Malvern Way located on the ridge above Hastings and Ore whilst working route 28. Tuesday 23rd August 2016.
The last batch of Magicbus Tridents sent down from Manchester still retain the distinctive livery as their use as described above will only be short lived.

Built between 1979 and 1981 by General Motors of Canada and classified as "DF", the locomotives were rebuilt with turbo-charged Diesel engines in 1991, were reclassified as "DFT", and were now capable of generating 2,400 horsepower.
The locomotives are used on Freight and Passenger services throughout the North Island, and on Freight services on the Picton-Christchurch-Dunedin-Invercargill main line in the South Island - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_DF_class_locomotive_(1979).
STOP PRESS: - KiwiRail has just announced it has signed a contract with Stadler Rail of Valencia (Spain) for 57 new locomotives to be based in the South Island, presumably replacing the 50 - 60 year old General Electric-built DX class locomotives (which is known as the U26 in America). See www.kiwirail.co.nz/media/new-locomotives-to-replace-south... for all the details).

With the withdrawal of the last step entrance vehicles from the fleet earlier in the year attention now turns to the early low floor vehicles which are not DDA compliant these being the early Dennis Tridents.
One such vehicle due for withdrawal before the DDA-deadline for double deck vehicles comes into force at the start of next year despite only recently being returned to traffic is Stagecoach South East 17663 V163 DFT which is seen here departing from Hastings Railway Station whilst working route 24. Saturday 20th August 2016.

Ooo, I don't think I've seen a pair of DFs together in the year I've been in NZ. Certainly not down south anyway, so despite the murk, the Mini was steamed up and set sail in a southerly direction.
You'd have to be a fool to go so far south for a dark train picture, but hard to resist a good dusk train chase in the wet in a 47 year old car with no brakes. And that wasn't the end of it either.
Not sure if he saw me or was being polite to upcoming traffic, but I did appreciate the lights being low-beamed. Without which this picture would look more like a white piece of paper inside a lightbulb on the sun. That truck was another bonus.

The pair were running a little late and loaded to the gunwales based on the sweet thrum of turbocharged EMD 12s slowly but steadfastly clawing their way up the 1 in 50 Waireka Bank in some mild dampness.
