This was seen at a Bagram Air Field (BAF) Dining Facility (DFAC) today. I am here for a little R&R before an upcoming mission. Both places where I have been the last almost 10-months here in Afghanistan have had the same menu that repeats every 2-3 weeks, and MREs. Where I am going, we will get MREs. That's it. People who are here or have been here know that BAF is the land of 4 actual dining facilities, with more food and more selections than your local smorgasbord/buffet. They have HOT, FRESH chow most of the day and also midnight chow. They can take a hot shower anytime they want. They have a free laundry service for their uniforms/clothes. (Where I am going there are no toilet/shower/laundry facilities - just a local stream). They have talent shows, visiting celebrities, karaoke nights, and various weekly dance nights. They also have two PXs, Dairy Queen, Burger King, a pizza place, an Italian place, a Korean place, Popeye's chicken, and two Green Bean Coffee houses. They have internet and cable TV access in their hooches (living quarters). I'm sorry, but this just struck me hard when I read it - how spoiled are these people? A lot of them come here and never leave the safety of being inside the wire, and they get the same combat pay that I do (plus they earn a combat patch of some sort). Of course, I know it's human nature to complain about life no matter where you are - I've heard people complain who are stationed in Kuwait and Qatar, which are just larger and nicer versions of BAF (which used to be an old Soviet Air Base).
