In Romania we stayed in a motel in a town called Deva, which (we discovered afterwards) is close to Transylvania and Vlad the Impaler's castle (the original vampire story). The motel had this awesome sign plus organ pipes on the stairs. I'd describe the town as scary-industrial: there was a lot of fairly rusty heavy industry and a powerful smell of acetone, which did nasty things for our ability to breathe.
