Algae Jet Fuel at the Scottsdale Airpark
Due to the great climate and weather, Scottsdale is a popular golf and resort/spa destination for businessmen and tourists from the United States and the world. Tourism is a vital part of Scottsdale’s economy, bringing in a combined revenue of 6.7 billion dollars per year. Scottsdale’s future depends on the health of this industry! However, rising oil prices caused by a “Peak Oil” scenario will make fuel expensive – raising the cost to visit Scottsdale. With 200,000 operations per year, Scottsdale airport is one of the busiest single runway airports in the nation bringing in both high-end tourists and businessmen. Rethinking fuel is necessary to ensure Scottsdale’s economy-algae provides a solution.
Algae is not only a solution to the fuel problem; it has many environmental benefits. Algae needs water, nutrients, CO2 and sunlight (photons). Algae thrives upon greywater; filtering and cleaning it for reuse. Algae systems will thrive in Scottsdale due to its 325 days of sunshine per year.
Arizona State University recognizes algae’s potential to solve the fuel issue. As a growing research institute, ASU has partnered with British Petroleum and Science Foundation Arizona to develop a source for the production of biodiesel. Researchers at ASU are part of a team led by Honeywell to find alternative sources of oil. ASU has a research park in Scottsdale near the airport, this park is empty now, and can be used to develop research on algae biofuel. The city can partner with Honeywell and ASU guide the airpark into the next generation.
Scottsdale’s airport uses 10 million gallons of fuel per year. At $5.75 per gallon the yearly cost of fuel is $57.5 million - this number will increase in the future. The current price of refined algae fuel is $1.70 per gallon resulting in a yearly cost of $17 million per year. Switching to algae-based jet fuel would save the airport $40.5 million per year. The switch would not require the jet engine or any infrastructure to be altered – algae based fuel has the same molecular structure as fossil fuels. Flights completed by Air New Zealand, Continental and Virgin Atlantic Airways have already used algae-based fuels in successful flights. Algae may gradually replace existing fuel.
To provide fuel supply for the airport, algae must be mass-produced in a factory – the “bio-factory.” The factory house “Vertigro” algae systems in climate-controlled areas, each producing 33,000 – 48,000 gallons of algae oil per acre per year. The initial cost of a bio-factory is $175 million. Without additional funding this factory will pay for itself in less than five years with savings of $40.5 million per year under present fuel costs which will surely rise, creating even more savings.
This factory will not pollute and clean pollution on public lands, sequestering CO2 in the algae and cleaning the wastewater of Scottsdale. The bio-factory serves a double function. During the day, it shelters algae in a controlled climate and at night it fosters the arts community of Scottsdale that relies upon high-end tourism. Factory buildings at night are art galleries, spaces where the community gathers to celebrate the arts industry. The factory site is a place for Scottsdale’s community identity “Live, Work, Play.”
This project provides a solution to the peak-oil scenario for the Scottsdale community, addressing the critical system of the airport. By keeping the airport an economically viable means of transportation, Scottsdale may thrive economically, allowing Scottsdale to continue to enjoy “Live, Work, Play” while using its revenue to continue to transform the community towards sustainability and regeneration.
Briksdalsbreen glacier terminates in Briksdalsbrevatnet, a small lake which lies 346 metres above sea level. The size of Briksdalsbreen depends not only on temperature, but is also strongly affected by precipitation. Measurements since 1900 show small advances of the glacier front in the first decades. In the period from 1934 to 1951 the glacier receded by 800 metres, exposing the glacial lake. In the period from 1967 until 1997 the glacier expanded by 465 metres and covered the whole lake, with the glacier front ending at the lake outlet. After the year 2000, the glacier once again receded. In 2004 it had receded to 230 metres behind the lake outlet and in 2007 the glacier front was on dry land. As Briksdalsbreen has become very narrow at some stretches, it is possible that it will disconnect from the larger Jostedalsbreen glacier in the near future. Sogn and Fjordane county, Norway. The African leopard exhibits great variation in coat color, depending on location and habitat. Coat colour varies from pale yellow to deep gold or tawny, and sometimes black, and is patterned with black rosettes while the head, lower limbs and belly are spotted with solid black. Male leopards are larger, averaging 60 kg (130 lb) with 91 kg (201 lb) being the maximum weight attained by a male. Females weigh about 35 to 40 kg (77 to 88 lb) on average.[citation needed]
The African leopard is sexually dimorphic; males are larger and heavier than females. Between 1996 and 2000, 11 adult leopards were radio-collared on Namibian farmlands. Males weighed 37.5 to 52.3 kg (83 to 115 lb) only, and females 24 to 33.5 kg (53 to 74 lb).The heaviest known leopard weighed about 96 kg (212 lb), and was recorded in South West Africa.
According to Alfred Edward Pease, black leopards in North Africa were similar in size to lions. An Algerian leopard killed in 1913 was reported to have measured approximately 8 ft 10 in (2.69 m), before being skinned.
Leopards inhabiting the mountains of the Cape Provinces appear smaller and less heavy than leopards further north. Leopards in Somalia and Ethiopia are also said to be smaller.
The skull of a West African leopard specimen measured 28.6 cm (11.25 in) in basal length, and 18.10 cm (7.125 in) in breadth, and weighed 790 g (1 lb 12 oz). To compare, that of an Indian leopard measured 28 cm (11.2 in) in basal length, and 20 cm (7.9 in) in breadth, and weighed 1,000 g (2 lb 4 oz)
Some love it. Some hate it. Los Angeles, or more poetically called the City of Angels, is the largest city in the state of California, and the second largest city in the USA. The city has population of nearly 4 million while the greater Los Angeles, depending on the source, is home to 12 - 18 million people. LA is a very diverse city with large population of Hispanics/Latinos, African Americans, Whites, Asians, and other communities including American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islanders. The city is also known for its freeway network with horrendous traffic jams and smog, Hollywood, and the beaches. In LA, you don’t ask “how far it is” but rather “how long it will take you” to get there.

Depending on your definitions, I was either walking or hiking down a steep slope on South Sunset Bench Road when I decided to take a short break to take this photo, and a couple of sister photos pretty much just like it.
The capture shows, in almost 3-D form, the foreground, with a few snow remnants scattered amongst some ponderosa pines, a good deal of sagebrush, the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana, and the iconic Bitterroot Mountains in the distance. Throw in a fairly fabulous post-sunset sky and you have the makings of a delightfully handsome scene.
Mother Nature produced it. I took a short break from my exercise to record it, and then continued on my merry way back down "the bench", Montana's name for an elevated plateau that is located before foothills or mountains are encountered, or the mountains themselves.
This view is one very sweet one among many that are near my home, higher up on Sunset Bench Road, and walking or hiking this rural road in either direction is a great pleasure, something I do multiple times a week. Up. Down. Both. Never uphill both ways.
Every day and every season offers up a totally new sky and a vibrant new scene, different and unique, each one. The same as the favorite view-field in your neighborhood. And therein lies the magic.
So. The difference between a walk and a hike? The length.
The degree of exertion. The use of a hiking pole. The path or the surface. The location or the local environment. Whether or not one sweats during the activity. But the pleasure and the benefit is the same, no matter the name. Especially in delightfully beautiful places.
SN/NC: Mussaenda Erythrophylla Var. Hybrid C, M. Philippica, Rubiaceae Family
Mussaendas belong to the Rubiacea family which also includes the Gardenia, Ixora, Pentas and coffee plants (Coffea arabica). This red one is not the most common, usually they are coral or pale rose. This shrub is sometimes referred to as "Bangkok Rose". It produces a showy display in shades of white, pink, salmon to red, depending on the variety. While the the bushes are not so attractive in winter (when they can lose their leaves if cold enough) they are a valuable addition to a tropical or subtropical garden for their showy display over an extended period in the warm months.
Ela pertence à mesma família do café, a rubiácea.

The common name of cinquefoil is a reference to the fact that his wild herb often has a compound group of five toothed leaflets. There are sometimes seven or more leaflets, though, depending on the species, but five is the most common.
There are actually over 300 different species and even more cultivars of cinquefoil. Some of them are annuals while others are perennials. A few even grow as biennials. The plant is attractive and is sometimes purposely grown for landscaping purposes, though it grows wild in many places. Cinquefoil is a member of the rose family, though the blossoms are usually substantially smaller and normally don’t have the fragrance associated with roses. This plant is also closely related to strawberries and is sometimes called barren strawberries because they don’t produce strawberry-like fruits. The leaves are often similar in appearance to strawberries, too, except that strawberries have leaves of three rather than five or more.
The flowers can be in various colors, but common cinquefoil most often has bright yellow flowers, each with five petals. It is also normally a low growing plant that can function as a ground cover, usually between a half of a foot to a foot and a half tall, although some species grow as a low bush.
This wild herb grows wild in most of the cooler areas of the world. It is very common in the UK, North America and in Europe. In North America, it grows throughout the north and most of Canada. It is sometimes cultivated in the south, too.
Several species of cinquefoil have been used medicinally for a very long time. It was used by the ancient Romans and has been used by Native Americans for at least that long. Both the roots and the leaves have medicinal value and many sources list the plant properties as anti-inflammatory, astringent, antiseptic, antispasmodic and diuretic. Additionally, the plant can be used as a mild febrifuge.
A tea made with a tablespoon of the roots or herb to a cup of boiling water is used for swelling and pain in the mouth, bleeding gums, toothache, stomach ulcers, raw or sore throat, diarrhea, inflammation of the digestive tract, stomach cramps, menstrual pain and several American Indian tribes used it as a laxative. It can be useful to take the tea during a cold or the flu, since is lessens swelling and pain in the throat, soothes the stomach and can ease coughing and helps to control fevers.
When used externally, cinquefoil can aid in controlling the bleeding, pain, and inflammation of wounds, bruises, insect stings, itches, gout, arthritis, sciatica, boils, and acne.
Both the fresh and dried herb can be used, though fresh is stronger in action. An extract can also be made by crushing the fresh roots or leaves, putting these in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and covering them with vodka. The jar is then capped and the mixture is shaken daily for two weeks. The leaves and roots are then filtered out through cheesecloth. The extract is much more potent than the tea, so a teaspoonful is roughly equivalent to a cup of the tea.
Cinquefoil is a plant that is worth learning to recognize on sight and thankfully, this isn’t hard to do. Although the wild herb contains iron, calcium, and magnesium, its main value is when used medicinally rather than as food. This could make cinquefoil especially valuable in a survival situation. For that reason, it could be considered to be a survival herb, though it isn’t normally eaten.

Light & shadow in Autumn have different expressions to show people, and they depends on when we saw them at the time of the day.
This series I would like to take the sunlight & the shadow at the moment of late afternoon/ early evening, cause it's one of the most beautiful time period within a day for the light & shadow, and I try to express the beauty in mulitple techniques, including remaining original photographing, with minor color enhancement, and added-on with blur & soft effect, futher more with the multiple exposure etc. Hope to bring you to experience all kind of expression of this special moment. Enjoy the happy moment of the day and let me know how you feel about this bunch of photoworks..

I saw a man skip stones on the surface of Greenlake. Every few steps he will dig the frozen soil with his index finger and carve one out to skip with. It made a wonderful sound. I asked him to skip another stone for me just so that I could hear that sound again. And it was even lovelier.

Autumn....or fall, I guess that depends on what part of the world you live in, but this is by far is my favorite time of the year. Living here in Vegas, it’s the time of year where we finally get a break from the relentless scorching summer heat. The time of year where temperatures are cold and chilly in the higher elevations, but yet perfect in the deserts. It’s the time of year that I’m most happy. But....it’s the time of year photographically I lose my mind! The smell of decaying leaves , the bite of coolness in the air, the runny noses, and my favorite...TREES! Aspen trees. You see, for those that don’t know me very well, I have an obsession with photographing trees. I love them, call me a tree hugger. Shooting the forest is the hardest subject for me to shoot. But yet every time I step foot into the forest, I feel at home. I let my eyes and camera do the talking. The forest is the one place where you can find your own compositions and call them your own. Lastly, it’s one of the few places that you’ll see photographers all over the place.
With all that being said, today I share with you my latest body of work. I’ve actually been holding on to these images since last year. I wasn’t really fully content with the processing of the images, so over the past year I’ve reprocessed and curated this gallery several times, and finally is where I feel everything flows conceptually and cohesively.
Hope you guys enjoy the new images! Peace and love to everyone out there. Huge thanks to my wife and family for putting up with my madness and hours in front of that computer. And big big thanks to all of my close friends that have shown support over the years, you guys know who you are. You guys rock and look forward to more trips. Lastly, thanks to everyone out there in the cyber/social media world that has shown love and support! I greatly appreciate it! I’m here because I love the art. I love what I do.

Giraffes are best known for their long necks and the striking coat patterns of irregular brown patches on a lighter background. Each giraffe has a pattern that is unique to that individual, like a human fingerprint. This may help hide them from predators, particularly when they are young, since the bloches tend to break up their outline when they are among trees. Giraffes are divided into several subspecies depending on their geographic location, color and coat pattern.
Germany, Hamburg, Crocuses, “spring is knocking”. There are between 80 to 120 species of "botanical crocuses" depending on the definition, meaning the wild species in contrast to the ornamental crosses between different species by gardeners. Wild crocuses are only found in the temperate latitudes of Europe, Asia as well as in North Africa, with the focus being on the Mediterranean region from Italy to the Balkans, Greece, Turkey & the Caucasus.
In Germany we only have wild stocks of the white crocus in the foothills of the Alps, from the Allgäu to the Berchtesgaden Alps. White crocuses probably came during prehistoric times to Central Europe with the human settlements. Their distribution ranges from the Pyrenees in the west across the Alps to Albania.
In Germany there was a saying „Safran macht den Kuchen gehl“, meaning Saffron makes the cake yellow.
The saffron blossoms are picked immediately after they have blossomed; the long stigmas are plucked out by hand & then dried.
In order to obtain 1 kg of saffron, 150,000 to 200,000 flower stigmas have to be harvested & dried in laborious manual work. This also explains the high price, for 100 gr 800€ & higher, i.e. 8000€ per kg in 2021.
1 gram is the general trade size for consumers.
Because of this price, fake or cut saffron is widely available: especially so-called saffron powder, fakes can consist of a turmeric mixture. Saffron threads are also counterfeited, but those familiar with the look & smell can tell the difference
The world annual production is at least 300 tons. Yellow-red carotenoids are responsible for the enormous colouring power of saffron, while the essential saffron oil & saffron bitter are responsible for the scent & a slightly bitter taste. The ingredients are water-soluble; heating or even very carefully a little bit roasted in a pan enhances the flavour & colour of the saffron threads; in water or in milk simmered it is a versatile seasoning & colouring liquid.
Saffron is hardly ever used in everyday Central European cuisine, but it should not be missing in Mediterranean classics such as Paella, Risotto Milanese or la Bouillabaisse Marseillaise, saffron is also indispensable in Persian & Indian cuisine.
📌 !!! …In higher doses, like nutmeg, saffron is toxic, in the past it was even used for abortions.
The lethal amount is 10 to 20 grams.

YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND – JAMES TAYLOR
Somewhere under the rainbow
a seagull full of hope
flies low across a violet sky
telling me that I can cope
so many signs we see if only
we care to open our eyes and look
the tender pages of our stories
rest gently between a velvet-covered book
bookmarked by a wish; a dream
on a snow white angel's wing and prayer
we are capable of so many things
if only we be brave and dare
so many times I tumble down
so many times get up
the little precious many things
I find to fill my golden cup
I raise it now and wish you well
blow you a New Year's kiss
ne'er let Auld Lang Syne be e'er forgot
a cup of kindness is full of bliss
if love is a many splendoured thing
and music be the food of love
then I have eaten a banquet here
a feast lain down from Heaven above
and as the New Year begins again
I'll keep you always in my heart
and if sometimes it seems I'm scarce
remember these words of René Descartes
“He lives well who is well hidden”
as I seek the truth of my life in silent ways
with clear mind comes a revelation
that will buoy me up on stormy waves
when grey clouds loom; obscure my vision
I know the moon and sun still shine
and you will know too that I am here
just call my name; send me a sign.

Is he black and white or white and black. One I used to love try to get a picture of on my walks when living at the old home because after all this color horse is my dream horse. Trees and long grass were always a problem as well 2 little dears wanting to sniff all the smells on the end of leads in my hands. This guy is a brumby. Not unlike the mustangs that roam wild in the American areas , brumbies roam the high country here. This one along with 2 others were captured not sure for what reason and brought to a property near us. Apparently they can make good riding ponies. I’ll leave that one to the experts.

One of the cool aspects of the southwest united states' deserts is that you can see various timelines unfolding in real-time. When I was at Arches NP, I saw a documentary on how the NP got its namesake Arches. You can see a couple of examples of this geological process on some of the hikes. While we were visiting Valley of Fire SP in Nevada, we saw one of the best examples of a fin formation that a precursor to a natural arch. If you zoom into the image, you can see a hiker to the left of this massive fin formation for understanding scale.
This is another example of an image where the presence of darker elements enhances the bright parts. Now I would have been a much happier person if the light was on the other side of the fin, but that’s the reality of being a travel photographer. As soon as I saw this rock formation, I knew I wanted to photograph it. The light was not coming in from the direction I wanted, but the light's quality was spectacular. I also thought of using the shrubs as a leading line, but I couldn’t get a composition that satisfied me. This would have been a spectacular sunrise location, though, but unfortunately, I had planned a hike to pastel canyon for that time slot, which by the way, didn’t disappoint.
