The Pyrrhuloxia (pronounced however your mouth decides in the moment) is the desert’s answer to a cardinal—same spiky crest, but with more attitude and less hydration.

I found this one perched on a rare leafy ocotillo, posing like he owned the place. With his candy-corn beak, dusty-red plumage, and permanent side-eye, he’s the bird version of a grumpy old-timer who’s seen things.

He’s tougher than his Northern cousin—built for heat, sand, and yelling at you from a bush for reasons known only to him. His song? Like a cardinal, but sharper, higher, and just a little bit judgmental.

Get the light right, and he glows like a desert ember.

He sings with a sting and glares like a monk—

A feathered grump with desert funk.

If you decide to travel along this highway into the bowels of the Universe, carry enough fuel to cover the billions of light years ahead of you. You won't find a place to refuel. When you have travelled this distance without finding anything, not even a little bit of intelligent life and you reach the far reaches of the Universe... don't be scared... there's nothing there, either. Only the "nothing". Or since everything is cyclical, perhaps you have returned to the place where you started, full of wisdom from your long trip. It's probably better to look for intelligent life on Earth, but it's also very likely that you'll have a hard time finding it. Don't worry about not understanding the Universe or the reason for its existence... you're not Einstein, but one day you'll understand that... The Universe is wounded, but it still has infinity ahead of it. It still has you and me. Merry Christmas to all and to the infinite Universe that is within you.

Gregory Alan Isakov - The Universe

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts VI–IX

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond", was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett, one of the founders of Pink Floyd. He was also known as "The Crazy Diamond Syd". Barrett was a very creative musician and is considered one of the rock icons, with a strong influence on many artists, very especially to David Bowie. Syd Barrett is a key piece to understand the evolution of rock in the 70s.. Excessive drug use, especially LSD, caused him serious mental health problems. Syd Barrett died in 2006 at the age of 60. The Universal is a science fiction song written as a tribute to two films by film director Stanley Kubrick. In the video, the Blur members wear outfits similar to Alex and his gang of thugs, the protagonists of the movie "A Clockwork Orange." The image used for the cover of the single alluded to what is possibly Kubrick's best film: "2001: To Space Odyssey."

Running up and down the trail around the lake trying to decide where the best sunrise shot might occur. Tripping over my own tripod, just another day of photography in my life.

Located in the heart of Central Oregon just 25 miles west of Bend, Sparks Lake is a large, shallow lake. Situated near the northwest edge of Mount Bachelor, the lake boasts spectacular views of Broken Top and South Sister in addition to Mount Bachelor. Sparks Lake was formed by volcanic activity in the area over 10,000 years ago. Pristine alpine streams flow into this beautiful lake.

I see that Flickr decided to name this Elk Lake on the map. Nope, it's Sparks Lake!

“What you have to decide... is how you want your life to be. If your forever was ending tomorrow, would this be how you'd want to have spent it? Listen, the truth is, nothing is guaranteed. You know that more than anybody. So dont be afraid. Be alive.”

Quote ― Sarah Dessen, The Truth About Forever

After months of planning and deciding where to go to take the shot of steel wool burning I just went out - drove close to the cemetery a few kilometres away and took the shot. This was a result of the 3rd attempt. i know - it's far from perfect but just a start. I must say I immensly enjoyed taking the shot - it was fun to see those sparks flying around while moving the whisk around. I'll definitely do it more than just once - changing scenery - discovering new places to shoot it - definitely somewhere over the water.

I had a hard time post processing - mainly because of light pollution - the background was too light. Finally just used RawTherapee to tweak it - originally WB was not so good on automatic so had to work on it. I guess I could do it much better but hey it's my first time.

The peony among the Greeks

In their culture, the peony is much more than a pretty flower for sunny days, it is first and foremost considered a medicinal plant. This faculty also nourished a Greek myth, where anger of the gods and healing mingle. Its name, according to rumors, comes from the doctor Péon, disciple of Asclepius, god of medicine. The latter would have found a remedy for the pain of women during childbirth. His master, jealous of his talent, said to himself that in the end, he deserved to die this one. Fortunately for Peon and for us, Zeus proposed a less dramatic punishment and changed the young doctor into the flower he had discovered: a peony. Also famous for its bright colors, its shades and shades have also inspired a legend that continues to exist in our modern world, through the expression: “blush like a peony”.

The story here is about the nymph Péone, who like most naiads was incredibly beautiful. Courted by all the gods, she had the bad idea to do a little too much and break the divine code of modesty. A false step, provoking the indignation of the all-powerful, who then decided to change it into an extraordinary flower: a peony. As for its error of judgment, to inscribe it forever in history, they gave its petals the color of shame, red. Hence the term...

Peony in the Land of the Rising Sun

Asia is full of myths and legends, which teach us a little more about our favorite flower. The first, partly tells why spring is the favorite season for peonies. In China during the Tang Dynasty, on a very cold winter day, Empress Wu Zetian after drinking a little too much wine, demanded flowers from her garden to bloom during the night, to satisfy her in the early morning. . The flower calendar was apparently the least of his worries...

Her name meaning "she who disciplines the sky", the latter was convinced that no flowering variety would dare to disobey her. The next day, only the peony had decided to do as it pleased and to wait for spring. The queen of the season then appears for the first time, like a flower with a strong character. Mad with rage, the Empress exiled all the peonies in the country to Luoyang, where they finally blossomed proudly, giving rise to a marvelous flowery spectacle. The city has since been the capital of the peony, and organizes a festival dedicated to it every year.

Alot of people stop on the corner between Glenuig and Roshven. On a clear, sunny day it is a fantastic viewpoint either out to the small Isles of Muck, Eigg and Rum or inland up Loch Ailort with the mountains on either side. Too often the view is stunning but I can't decide whether to stop and take a picture. It's easy to say it will look this gorgeous any other day and drive on by. Today, with a bit of extra wind I just had to have a go at a panoramic shot (4 images)

Bird photography sounds peaceful. You picture me quietly communing with nature, sipping coffee while majestic creatures flutter by, posing politely like they’re in a Disney movie. That’s a lie. The truth involves hauling lawn chairs, tripods, and a camera bag that weighs more than a third grader across the desert before sunrise—all to sit motionless next to a glorified livestock trough filled with water I wouldn’t let my enemies drink.

This cattle tank, which I have gentrified into a “desert oasis” (by tossing in a stick), is now a fine-dining establishment for birds. The stick is important. I found it on the ground, which makes it natural, and I chose one with bark and lichen because birds don’t like muddy feet—and I like a pretty perch.

Birds don’t just fly in, though. First, they land about twenty-five feet away in what I call the staging area, where they scope things out and decide if it’s safe to drink. Just as I know birds come here for water, they know hawks come here for birds. If it seems risky, they vanish into the brush to post angry tweets about predator privilege.

This time, an American Robin decided to play along. He glided down to the branch, dipped his beak into the water, then raised his head to swallow—because robins, like most birds, can’t gulp. They rely on gravity to get the water down. No swallow muscles. No peristalsis. Just tip and pray.

As he tilted his head back, water spilled from his beak. I fired off a burst of photos. In this frame, he’s in perfect profile, water spilling from his bill, with a few droplets stopped in mid-air and a few reached the surface, sending delicate ripples across the pond.

His reflection was beautiful and haunting, like a bird pondering the mysteries of hydration—or maybe just wondering why some guy shoved a branch in his drinking fountain.

In the desert, water is liquid gold. To birds, cattle tanks are survival. To me, they’re proof that lugging heavy gear into the wilderness to photograph a robin mid-sip is a perfectly reasonable way to spend retirement.

Especially if you're trying to avoid housework.

He lifts his head to the sky—a gravity feed,

’Cause evolution said, “Nah—gulping’s not a need.

The three Punky Bears in Mummy Marian's house, bored on a rainy day in January, decide to do something.

PUNKINHEAD: (looks at a cupboard in the living room )

Hey Punky and Scottie...shall we see what's in that cupboard (points paw at the cupboard).

SCOTTIE;

Well....I'd like to, but we'll have to ask Mummy Marian if it's allowed.

PUNKY:

We can't, because she's shopping.

PUNKINHEAD:

Obviously...we tried to ask her, but if she's not here then we can't do anything else about it. We have done our best. So we are going to look in the cupboard.

Punky climbs on Scottie's back and Punkinhead then climbs on Punky's back and opens the door.

PUNKY:

Wow!!!! Look at that...what stuff is hidden in there.

All sorts of things are being looked at. Photo albums, books and CDs

Everything is mixed together.

Suddenly....

There are sounds of footsteps and a slamming door in the hallway.

PUNKY:

Quickly guys.... sit down and look ahead. Mummy Marian is back from shopping.

SCOTTIE:

I see her entering the room.....

ME:

What are you guys doing?????

PUNKINHEAD:

Well..uh..Punky wanted to sit in the dark and...uh....

PUNKY:’

I didn't want to sit in the dark at all. You wanted to.

ME:

No arguing. I know, though. You sneaked into the cupboard while I was away....isn't it?

SCOTTIE:

We got bored Mummy Marian

We can't play outside because it's raining.

ME:

Hm..I have an idea. You guys clean up and then we'll have hot chocolate with whipped cream.

PUNKINHEAD, PUNKY and SCOTTIE:

I couldn't decide whether to upload this same image but with the beetle in focus and the stigma and anthers out of focus. In the end I went with this one where the flower parts are in clear focus and the bug is lurking in the background :)

I love the white walls of this delicate flower here, the backlighting being the direct sunshine outside of the flower.
