The DB Class 101 is a class of three-phase electric locomotives built by Adtranz and operated by DB Fernverkehr in Germany. 145 locomotives were built between 1996 and 1999 to replace the 30-year old and aging Class 103, primiarily hauling Intercity services. The Class 103s were wearing out doing annual distances of up to 350,000 km on heavy IC 160kph trains over some demanding lines in Germany. The class 101 bogies are redeveloped from bogies on ICE trains. They have a 220 km/h (136.7 mph) top speed, 6,400 kW (8,583 hp), 300 kN (67,443 lbf).
The slab sides free of any vents or openings make these useful locos to carry revenue earning advertising liveries for DB.
