The DB 042 Class began life as the Class 41, which was the standard 2-8-2 freight locomotive built from 1937 to 1941 and operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. After the Second World War, 216 locomotives went to the Deutsche Bundesbahn and 122 were left in the hands of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in East Germany.
The boiler of these locomotives suffered from metal fatigue and between 1957 and 1961, 107 locomotives were fitted with fully welded boilers. Forty examples were converted to oil-firing with heavy oil and from 1968, they were designated as Class 042. The last Class 042 steam locomotives were withdrawn in 1977 at Rheine locomotive shed.
