Auch in Jüterbog war der Dominikaner Johann Tetzel als Ablassprediger aufgetreten, was Martin Luther im nicht weit entfernten Wittenberg veranlasst haben soll, seine 95 Thesen zu veröffentlichen. Man führte Gespräche mit Theologiedozenten und Studenten aus Wittenberg über die reformatorischen Ideen, gegen die sich der Jüterboger Guardian und einige Lektoren der Ordenshochschule abgrenzten, weil sie um die Einheit der Kirche fürchteten. Zu Ostern 1519 kam es in Jüterbog zu einem Streit zwischen Thomas Münzer und den Franziskanern, der durch öffentliche Predigten ausgetragen wurde. Der Lektor Bernhard Dappen richtete im Namen des Konvents eine Beschwerde an den Bischof von Brandenburg, die Martin Luther zugespielt wurde, worauf dieser den Jüterboger Franziskanern mit öffentlicher Bloßstellung „ihrer wunderlichen Weisheit“ drohte. Zwar verbot der Brandenburger Bischof die Predigt gegen Luther, aber die Einstellung der Brüder in Jüterbog trug dazu bei, dass die Sächsische Franziskanerprovinz insgesamt der Reformation kritisch gegenüberstand und in den folgenden Jahrzehnten die Schließung fast aller Klöster hinnehmen musste. Un des exploits les plus marquants, bien que sans valeur sportive, reste sans doute celui de l'escroc Victor Lustig, qui réussit en 1925 à vendre la tour Eiffel en pièces détachées à un ferrailleur[24]. Lustig, aidé de Dan Collins, surnommé « Dapper Dan », un acolyte rencontré à New York, avait lu comme tout le monde dans la presse la possibilité évoquée de démolir la tour Eiffel. Il en profita pour faire de faux documents du ministère des Postes et Télégraphes, organisme responsable de la tour, sélectionna les cinq plus importantes compagnies récupératrices de métaux ferreux qu'il convoqua à l'hôtel de Crillon, place de la Concorde, à Paris, soi-disant pour effectuer la transaction en toute discrétion. Seuls étaient censés être dans la confidence le président de la République, le ministre, le sous-ministre (incarné par Victor Lustig) et son chef de cabinet (incarné par Dapper Dan, son complice). Il leur annonça : « Messieurs, le gouvernement devra démolir la tour Eiffel ! Et vous êtes ici pour soumissionner ! », les conduit à la tour Eiffel en limousine qu'il leur fit visiter, puis sélectionna le ferrailleur le plus crédule, en lui annonçant qu'il avait gagné le marché. Celui-ci accepta de faire un gros chèque, représentant soi-disant la moitié de la moitié de la soumission, augmentée en plus d'un pot-de-vin !
Après avoir encaissé le chèque, les deux escrocs s'enfuirent pour l'Autriche. Quelques temps plus tard, ils revinrent à Paris pour retenter leur chance avec de nouveaux ferrailleurs, mais la police était sur le coup et les deux compères s'échappèrent en bateau à New York.

The River Chew in flood as viewed from Dapp's Hill Bridge, Keynsham, Somerset, 27 December 2020. In 1968 extremely heavy rain in the Mendip Hills caused a flash flood which resulted in large parts of Keynsham being inundated and much damage. The County Bridge on the River Avon just after the confluence with the Chew was washed away and communication between this part of North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire was disrupted for many months. As a result Keynsham railway station, which was due to close, was kept open. It is still open today and is well patronised.

Sterling band from my scrap pile, paired with a copper disk that was dapped to cuddle the vintage crocheted button.
The button is wooden with a crocheted cover, I soldered a spike of sterling in the center of the copper disk and coiled it to hold the button on.

This "swatch" is technically the first scallop of the bottom of the shawl. It will block to a nicer curve than this. The awkwardness of the blocked shape is partially because I was having to work around the limitations of having two round trivets to pin into (the center tassel would be pinned lower if there were cork underneath to pin it into).

When Marina gave me these earrings they had a medallion at the top with post earrings - one of which that broke - at the top, a stylized monkey in the middle, and this many-armed figure on the bottom. She just wanted to keep the bottom with a new earrings finding.
I cut some brass discs, dapped them, soldered a jump ring inside and, after removing the hinge and tension spring, soldered them onto the earring finding, then re-riveted the hook and closure back together.
