CN's seasonal rock job from southern Wisconsin to northern Illinois has been running in daylight for the first several weeks this year instead of its normal nocturnal operation. Train L70481-26 is accelerating south on the Waukesha Subdivision after clearing the permanent 35mph speed restriction in downtown Burlington.
The return of daylight saving time last weekend helped restore a sense of equilibrium to my brain. The hour 'gained' in autumn throws me for a five-month loop. It's a mental discomfort that is not helped by the already decreasing daylight in the final months of the year. I experience a mental lethargy as a result. And worse yet the feeling that the time change is an event to be 'gotten through' which is a very wasteful approach to living life. I try not to dwell on it, and it's certainly not the sort of thing that keeps me awake at night. Still it's an enormous relief to have daylight extending into early evening. It fills me with optimism which I know is fully illusory, but no less real to me.
This portrait was taken in the final moments of my last session with Katie shortly before the autumn clock change. A sense of dark glamour permeated the shots that day. Her emotionless expression fills the viewer with feeling and presence. It's a persona that exists only for the duration of the camera shutter speed.

I wake up feeling like you won't play right
I used to know, but now that shit don't feel right
It made me put away my pride
So long
You made a nigga wait for some, so long
You make it hard for boy like that to go on
I'm wishing I could make this mine, oh
RLHH 3049 and RLHH 3404 handle the Hydro One Schnabel car across the Six Nations Reserve. It is on its way to Nanticoke to be offloaded and taken to the Hydeo One facility there.
This was a very slow moving train, making for an easy chase.
Lots more to come...

Waiting for the moon to come and light me up inside
And I am waiting for the telephone to tell me I'm alive
Well I heard you let somebody get their fingers into you
It's getting cold in California
I guess I'll be leaving soon
Daylight fading
Come and waste another year
All the anger and the eloquence are bleeding into fear
Moonlight creeping around the corners of our lawn
When we see the early signs that daylight's fading
We leave just before it's gone
She said "Everybody loves you, "
She says, "Everybody cares"
But all the things I keep inside myself
They vanish in the air
If you tell me that you'll wait for me
I'll say I won't be here
I want to say goodbye to you
Goodbye to all my friends
Goodbye to everyone I know
Daylight fading
Come and waste another year
All the anger and the eloquence are bleeding into fear
Moonlight creeping around the corners of our lawn
When we see the early signs that daylight's fading
We leave just before it's gone
WSOR's train between Madison and Janesville is normally a nocturnal affair. Last night's crew only made it to Edgerton where the train was tied down until morning. Here the train is just south of Edgerton on its way towards Janesville with a relief crew on board.
The assault is preceded in broad daylight by a silence in which you hear the cracking of a reed, the fluttering of a bird's wings, its shadow on the wall.
I miss that silence, more characteristic of the night,
and even the beasts respect it.
More conducive to the cold stars than to this light that makes the equipment heavier,
the metal of helmets and armor.
A silence that is unique and always repeats itself.
By Tomás Hernández Molina.

Great to have an additional hour Daylights for birding.
Good day out and plenty of bird photos to come. for now enjoy this Little ones photo.
Often in the description of Short Eared Owls - but we are lucky in the UK to also see Barn Owls daytime hunting, something they do less elsewhere - where there are more raptor predators.
Little Owls are also commonly seen perched during the daytime, but not flying - at least not seen by me - as they spend a lot of time hunting about on foot rather than spotting prey from the air.
The Long Eared Owl can also be seen (sometimes) hunting in the day, probably when hunger forces it too, but is more nocturnal than the similar looking SEO.
Unfortunately work (and the rubbish weather when not at work!) have prevented me going after SEO's recently, but hopefully will have some opportunities over Christmas.
One from the end of November on a lovely sunny afternoon in the fens.
With conductor Burgholz deep into 100 track in Waukesha taking a list, I thought a simple, quick shot of our snortin' horse was in order. Those GP35m's were tops for making lots of racket while switching long drags of paper cars and running over the road. Great times.

After New England Central train 324 outlawed at White River Junction, local crew 600 took the train the rest of the way to Brattleboro. The train is passing one of the many farms with an impressive tractor set up. Photo taken Putney, VT
The most notable portion of the 1984 World’s Fair Daylight’s leg that brought it to Los Angeles was its assault over Tehachapi. Less remarked is that it did not take the Palmdale Cutoff over Cajon Pass, but instead descended into the LA Basin via the Soledad Canyon Line. Here the beautifully-matched thirteen car train rolls through Soledad Canyon, with the rear of the train crossing under the Soledad Canyon Road bridge..
The days are very short this time of year as it is, but sometimes it doesn't even get light at all, like today for example. I'm going to wear the kettle out if it doesn't improve out there soon....
Well I missed a rare daylight run to Caledonia today on the SOR...so why not post a daylight run from two years ago!
Here we see the RLHH SD40-2's pulling 595 across the Grand River in Caledonia. October 2015.
