I make a point of spending the final sunset of daylight time outdoors. Just another aspect of my compulsive disorder. This one falls somewhere between superstition and pagan ritual. Nightfall this time of year truly is dramatic in its swiftness. The rapid onset of darkness underscores the sense of anxiety that many people feel about transiting into the dark part of the year and the uncertainty of impending winter. Standing outdoors in this desolate farm field heightens the senses. Light and shadow play heavily into my awareness, both as a photographer and as a thinker. It seems only natural to be here, standing on the edge of darkness. The cornstalks rustle in the wind. It's eerie and unsettling, but I know I where I belong.
When I got up this morning at 5.15am/6.15am the sun was just coming up over the trees next door. A bit of slower shutter speed and zoom to give the effect that I felt given Daylight Savings changeover of time during the night. Hence the two times!
Pan Am Southern train EDPL moves south on Amtrak's Springfield Line at Newington Junction with a large train for Plainville, CT. At the right of the frame is the former New Haven Railroad freight house. Once a regular occurrence, daylight Pan Am moves on the Springfield Line have become rare due to the increased train traffic from the Hartford Line commuter rail service.

Daylight hours are noticeably longer now. Such a wonderful time of the year. And more light makes for longer before/after-work walks and happier pups.
These are fuzzy Star Magnolia buds which are just beginning to swell. They'll burst open in the next couple of weeks - or sooner, depending on the temperatures.

It is getting colder again ...
Have a great rest of the week and thanks for stopping by my friends.
I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you
I don't wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you
I've been sleepin' so long in a twenty-year dark night
And now I see daylight, I only see daylight

Just got a bunch of contact photos, so I'm catching up on my commenting.
The rear of Wisconsin Southern train T001X is just clearing downtown Fox Lake as the train heads west towards Janesville, Wisconsin. Freight moves such as this normally happen overnight east of Fox Lake, but occasionally if a train is delayed, it will stage near Rondout until the morning rush hour ends and a new WSOR crew can be dispatched to bring it west.
T001X runs a few times a week with all grain empties from Chicago, peddling the cars to the various customers west of Fox Lake and other locations on WSOR's southern division.

WSOR's T001-09 gets a late run on Metra's Fox Lake Subdivision last Thursday under the care of 2 soon-to-be-painted SD60Ms. Thorns? Check! Prickers? Check! Must be the shot to get. Hainesville, IL.
This image is from McCloud falls (lower) in California. I tried to it this falls first thing in the morning to get some strong light beams through the mist. Did not quite get what I wanted, but thought it came out very interesting any anyway. This was shot with a new ND filter to try to slow things down. I have used these before, but this was a nicer one that was supposed to leave the colors the same. I was not too impressed, but the jury is still out.
Let me know what you think.
