Inspiration: Taps
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.
Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.
Sun has set, shadows come,
Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds
Always true to the promise that they made.
While the light fades from sight,
And the stars gleaming rays softly send,
To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.
A windy day in Lynn's Lego City doesn't stop my minifigs from being out shopping :-)
I was actually just looking for an excuse to photograph this new hairpiece :-)

Friday the 10th of February is National Umbrella Day. National Umbrella Day celebrates this useful device that has been with us for quite a long time and has served every purpose from practical to fanciful since its creation.
For anyone who follows my photostream, you will know that I am a big collector of things. I have many, many different collections, including a collection of antique and vintage umbrellas and parasols. They range in age from my oldest parasol, which is frilled silk with a duck beak handle from the 1820s through to some vibrant examples from the Jazz Age of the 20s and the sleek and stylish 30s.
In this photo, I have photographed an umbrella from the latter part of my collection: a very vibrant example made more so by the sombre and masculine suit I have photographed it against, and the selective colour treatment I have given the image just for good measure.
The umbrella is made from Rayon, commonly known as artificial silk from its invention in 1846 until 1924. Since the name Rayon is proudly stitched into the edging of this umbrella, it dates from the late 1920s. It is a "Paragon" umbrella made by S. Fox and Company in England. It is an exuberant example of roaring 20s fun by its vibrant red colour. This umbrella was made in the era when plastic was a new and expensive material. The handle with its "hooky" head is made of Bakelite. Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It was developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York in 1907. S. Fox and Company was established in 1868 and still manufacture umbrellas in England to this day.
So, whether your brolly is antique, vintage or new, pick it up today and celebrate this day in a style that is particularly your own.
It was a new day for the City of Toronto. A new era begins as John Tory's first day as mayor commences. No more shenanigans. Now lets get this city moving again.
May 1st is known as the day Amtrak was created, way back in 1971. So when I learned from diligent observers about a 50th anniversary heritage unit leading an inbound Southwest Chief on Amtrak's 51st anniversary, of course I wanted to try to catch it. After running on time for most of it's run from Los Angeles, the Chief got held up just east of Neponset, IL for some unknown reason, sitting at a dead stop out in the country for nearly an hour. The best I can figure is freight train interference, as the Mendota Sub has been a complete mess since February 2022, with trains parked on the mains trying to get into both Eola and Galesburg at opposite ends of the Mendota Sub. I mention this only to enter it into the record for posterity, as the delay actually made it easier to catch the train. Here it sails past the grain elevators in Leland, on a very cold and windy May 1st.
Day 48, day 2 in Anglesey, this is the first shot I am happy with using my new Lee Big Stopper filter. Taken on Rhosneiger beach.
Thank you for looking. I would really appreciate it if you could follow me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/shutterhive
We took a day trip down the coast to Whakatane because I needed to see a specialist at the hospital and on the way back to Tauranga we stopped for awhile to take in the views. It is always a nice drive, the coastline is always worth exploring along the way.
Met my cousin who is home from Boston for an after work coffee in the Flower Market. We chatted so much it was dark by the time we were leaving.
After a sad day covered by the threatening clouds
The sunset sheds its sorrow on the fields
Like a river which takes its spring in the marshes of war
Or close to the ocean with the multiple blood reflections
There where the sun sinks and dies
I run on the hills but the red sphere
Escapes once again
So the color of joy disappears
Sorrow comes towards me
Just a small door is opened
In the immensity of the heavy skies
Which lets in at last some rays of blood
Judgement day has come...
I treated myself to some gorgeous tulips yesterday, and this morning they were just screaming to be photographed with the sunlight coming through the window.
I did take some that I have cropped much more heavily so that only one colour is visible, but I think I prefer the contrast of colours in this one.
EXPLORE: January 10, 2013
It is windy and cold outside. It seems like a perfect day to think about warmer places and better times. Last winter in Arizona was certainly both. The hummingbirds came around on a regular basis to entertain us. On occasion the camera would be handy and a photo memory was created. These little guys are always a joy to be around. Spring seems like such a long way down the road.
one more day of school. :)
