Locomotive History
One of the ten Pilot Scheme Peak class locomotives D8 was delivered to Camden in December 1959 but it was immediately loaned to Derby. During May 1960 it was transferred with Crewe North. During the early part of February 1962 D8 moved to Nottingham, the precursor of the eventual move to Toton in May 1962 for use on heavy freight duties. In the mid 1970’s the ten class 44 locomotives started to be withdrawn. Surprisingly D8, now numbered 44008 visited Derby Works during November 1979, not for withdrawal but for engine repairs, It would remain under repair at Derby until early July 1980 when it was tested on the 12.07 Derby - St Pancras, (with 45121 as the train engine) as far as Leicester, returning light engine to Derby and re-entered traffic at Toton. Despite its recent Works attention 44008's reprieve was brief, it was withdrawn along with the two remaining Class 44's during November 1980, and stored at Toton. In July 1981 the locomotive moved north to Scotland heading for preservation on the Strathspey Railway at Boat of Garten in the Highlands. Following the sale of a very forlorn 44008 to the North Notts Locomotive Group in 1987 the locomotive returned to the East Midlands and is now based at Peak Rail.
A look back over three decades ago to the Peak Railway at Matlock on 3rd August 1991 with Class 28 Metro-Vick D5705 in excellent external condition. Standing behind are 'Peaks' D8 'Penyghent' and D100 'Sherwood Forester'. The sole-surviving Metro-Vick is currently with the East Lancashire Railway Diesel Group at Bury as a long-term restoration project.

Apart from the diesel shunter behind D8 - a Sentinel industrial one I think - this photo could have been taken almost at any time in the era of the railways.
I have visited this Heritage Line so many times and this is the first time I have seen a loco and stock on that section of track. Once the service train behind CEGB 15 had left it became possible to take this photo. Then the old girl drew forward and backed onto the platform road.
What a magnificent sight - and no headboard to date the occasion. It was two days after The Coronation and the CEGB loco was carrying the headboard to mark the event.
The head-board will go into the archives of Peak Rail. [I asked in case they were open to offers for it.]

The quiet appearance of the station is deceiving. It took a while for everyone to clear for me to get the shot and there was still plenty of folk stood to my left and behind me.

Turning back south with loads, the green fleet yards 29x6 up the grade as they clear Carroll and echo their music off the nearby hills. The bunting decided to stay put for once, thankfully they don't create much wind dragging ass up the hill LOL

Donkervoort D8 GTO (2013–present)
The Donkervoort D8 GTO is a completely new creation. The engine, a 2.5L TFSI 5-cylinder turbocharged Audi engine, has a power output of 250-280 kW (340-380PS) and 450Nm of torque at 1600rpm, and the whole car weighs less than 700 kg. This low weight is due to composite materials such as the full carbon fibre body of the D8 GTO. With a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.8 kg/PS the car accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 2.8s and from 0–200 km/h in just 8.6s.
Tailing a service to Matlock D8 is about to be enveloped in a cloud of clag from the hardworking steam engine, which had already produced an impressive clag when setting off from Rowsley. The gap between the two was very handy for this image, although such was the steam engine's output visibility was dramatically reduced for a while and the clean air content was almost non-existent. To say you could taste it was no exaggeration. The Industrial Revolution probably produced the same on a much larger scale - to the detriment of health standards.
So far smokeless coal has yet to be a necessity for steam engines under the present concerns over global warming, etc.

Locomotive History
D8 was delivered to Camden in December 1959 but it was immediately loaned to Derby. During May 1960 it was transferred with Crewe North. With the future transfer of D1-D10 to Toton for use on freight trains on the Midland mainline some trials were conducted to ensure their suitability, especially with regard to their braking abilities. Trials were conducted between Toton, via Manton to Brent Yard with 1,000ton 85 coal wagons, brake van and dynamometer car. 9F 92153 was tested on Sunday June 19th 1960 followed by D8 on June 26th 1960. D8 proved to have superior braking performance over 92153, having a higher brake force and smoother operation of the brakes. During the early part of February 1962 D8 moved to Nottingham, the precursor of the eventual move of the class 44's to Toton for use on heavy freight duties. The other nine locomotives followed in March to Toton, to be a vital piece in the continuing dieselisation of freight traffic in the East Midlands. In May 1962 D8 moved to Toton. Surprisingly the locomotive, now numbered 44008 visited Derby Works during November 1979, not for scrapping but for engine repairs, It would remain under repair at Derby until early July 1980 when it was tested on the 12.07 Derby - St Pancras, (with 45121 as the train engine) and 44008 was removed at Leicester, returning light engine to Derby. It had retained blue livery with lower white stripe, with D8 at one end.
