Early in the 22nd century the Galactic federation cracked down on Space Raiding in all sectors within its control.
This forced the Raiders, as these Galactic space pirates had become known, to migrate to areas of the galaxy far beyond the reach of the federation.
Such an area is the Dark zone. Or Sector Z-3759
This is an area of the Galaxy where there are far fewer star clusters and other space phenomena than in any other sector.
This lack of light emitting objects gives the whole sector a darker appearance on any galactic imagery, giving rise to its name.
For years it was believed that there must be a black hole somewhere in the sector which was sucking in stars and planets causing this lack of light.
But unmanned probes sent to investigate found no evidence of one.
Having far less stars, and their attendant planetary systems and resources, made the dark zone a far less financially attractive proposition for exploration and colonisation by the mega corporations, so it was pretty much ignored.
