Saw him across the street

and was attracted,

as was my son,

to his shining green mohawk.

So I crossed the street

and followed him into the garden

of a cafe, where he was sitting with

friends. I intruded on their gathering

to ask for his photo, and he consented

but somewhat shyly,

casting his eyes downward

towards his big mug

of capuccino. "That mohawk

gets you a lot of

attention," said one

of his friends.

Most people looking to cut potatoes, are doing it for Tornado Fries and Chip Twister potatoes. So most potato cutters you will find on the market are for matchstick type cuts, curly cuts, and thin slicers for scalloped potatoes.

I believe this to be a leaf cutter bee. This photograph shows it entering a hole that it has made in a flower pot that is supported within an old elongated chimney which we use as a feature on a patio. The flower pot is in a sunny position. I have also seen a leaf cutter bee using the same flower pot within chimney (but when it was in a different position) last year. Further down the garden is another chimney with flower pot which I have also seen used by a bee. My wife has seen this bee at rest on the floor with a cut leaf before entering the hole.

As can be seen, it has a very noticable rear lower abdomen (white ... perhaps pollen covered). Wings held out wide (bad design for something that has to enter a hole).

I also have a photograph of the same bee emerging from the hole at an earlier date.

This bee is about the size of a honey bee. Below ground it must be able to turn around, as it emerges head first.

There are 47 species of Leafcutter ants. These tropical, fungus-growing ants are endemic to South and Central America, Mexico, and parts of the southern United States. Leafcutter ants "cut and process fresh leaves, flowers, and grasses to serve as the nutritional substrate for their fungal cultivars."

They form large and complex societies. Over time, the central mound of their underground nests can grow to more than 30 m across, with smaller, radiating mounds extending out to a radius of 80 m, taking up 30 to 600 m2 and containing eight million individuals.

The ants are divided into castes, based mostly on size, that perform different functions: Minims grow brood and care for the fungus garden, Minors patrol and defend foraging lines, Mediae cut leaves and bring leaf fragments back to the nest, and Majors defend the nest from intruders.

The ants actively cultivate their fungus, feeding it with freshly cut plant material and keeping it free from pests and molds. The fungus cultivated by the adults is used to feed the ant larvae, and the adult ants feed on leaf sap. The fungus needs the ants to stay alive, and the larvae need the fungus to stay alive, so the mutualism is obligatory.
