Bishop Edward Daly. 5 December 1933 - 8 August 2016
I was sad, from a personal as well as a political perspective, to hear of the death today of Bishop Edward Daly, at the age of 82.
In January 1972 the bishop, then a parish priest in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, was a pivotal player in the terrible event that became known worldwide as Bloody Sunday – one of the most notorious in the long history of The Troubles.
Among those present that day at a civil rights march was the then Father Edward Daly. Under gunfire, he waved a bloodstained handkerchief as he led a group of people carrying the dying teenager John Duddy away from the mayhem. This harrowing scene has become probably the most vividly enduring image of The Troubles, and to this day it’s depicted in a wall mural in Derry (top image).
In his book Ireland – A Terrible Beauty (1976), Leon Uris wrote: “For a time Father Daly had to leave Derry, for the agony of it had become unbearable. Then, in one of the hierarchy’s most enlightened decisions, he was named Bishop of Derry. This most Christian of men and most gentle of souls returned... for he was incapable of doing less.”
In my journalistic days with Thames Television, I was fortunate enough to work in Northern Ireland for some years during The Troubles, and I came to personally know the Bishop as a man of great humanity and integrity. In the bottom image, I’m on the left and Peter Taylor, now a veteran BBC reporter specialising in global terrorism, is on the right. The photograph was taken after we’d recorded an interview for Thames TV's This Week international current affairs programme on 27 January 1977.
Today, I should like to pay tribute to Bishop Edward Daly, a remarkable and outstanding human being, for all the good he did in Northern Ireland in those deeply troubled times and beyond. Blessed is the peacemaker.
A little more of my Northern Ireland material from those days is here.

Is the Netherlands in a national crisis, and how can it be solved?
An inverted Dutch flag flies in the summer breeze. The farmers’ protests and their apparent widespread support have led to some soul searching in the Dutch media about what can be done to solve the ‘national crisis’. The AD points out that the Netherlands is in the midst of a record number of crises with no easy way of solving them.
The floods of 1953, the paper says, led to ‘enormous solidarity’ with the victims and the feeling that such a thing should never happen again. But crises have now become ‘a test of solidarity’, Leiden University professor Arjen Boin told the paper. In the past, a government dealing with a crisis could count on the support of the ordinary man in the street, politicians and the media. ‘But that is now no longer the case, and this is something I find disturbing,’ Boin said.
Coronavirus In the early days of the coronavirus crisis the approach was one of ‘we will only get coronavirus under control by working together,’ but that feeling has now disappeared. ‘Everything has become politicised and that is feeding through into other protests. The anti-vaxxers are turning up at the farmers’ protests,’ Boin said.
Parliamentary historian Ronald Kroeze told Trouw that it is the cabinet itself which is presenting crises as crises. ‘It is as if we are faced with a slew of problems which are so big and so complex,’ he said. ‘But you could say, “yes, that is right, but it is up to politicians to solve them”.’ Politicians, Kroeze said, have to be aware that problems such as the shortage of housing and the refugee issue cannot be solved overnight. ‘You cannot solve a housing or a refugee crisis for all time,’ he said. ‘They are problems which return.
We had a housing crisis in the 1970s and we solved it.’ Citizens’ councils The Financieele Dagblad refers to the inverted Dutch flags which are flying from farm gates and lamp posts all over the country this summer as a symbol of protest. Support for the government has plunged since the new cabinet took office with a pledge to restore trust in government, the FD points out. ‘The Dutch have little faith that Mark Rutte’s fourth cabinet can solve the big social issues of our time.’ The paper suggest one way to try to restore faith in government is the introduction of the burgerberaad, or citizens’ council, which helped pushed through Ireland’s abortion law, for example. A citizens’ council is made up of 100 to 150 people selected by lottery, who work together with experts to draw up concrete proposals to deal with tricky problems, which politicians can then take further.
Cultural historian Eva Rovers told the paper that she is convinced citizens’ councils can strengthen democracy because ‘currently, political party interests often beat long-term gains’. Society, she says, is ‘a great source of expertice and experience’ which politicians make too little use of.
Polder
Volkskrant columnist Frank Kalshoven asks if the poldermodel – the Dutch practice of involving unions, employers, interest groups and politicians in reaching agreement on difficult issues – has had its day. While the first three components may have lost some power, politicians, he says, are wrestling with themselves, with central government, with voters and the media.
‘Most political parties that are now in parliament did not even exist when the international press praised the poldermodel in the 1990s,’ he says. ‘They are many, they are loud, ill-mannered and often disinterested in good governance and the common good – not to mention the good guys.’
Big tech
The disruption caused by big tech and social media have changed both behaviour and people’s ways of thinking. There is no longer room to count to ten and calmly reflect on things, he says. ‘Anyone who tries to make sensible policy in such circumstances will soon be disappointed,’ he writes. ‘What is useful for the common good is in conflict with the interest of some (privileged) minority. The loss is then magnified by a splinter party, supported with dubious information, whether financial or not, or by a lobby supported by companies with their own vested interests.’ Politicians, he concludes, are becoming more and more like the modern Sinterklaas in that they are handing out presents to those who are good, but no longer have a way of dealing with those who misbehave. Politics, he says ‘has become impotent.’
The apartment block in St. Denis used by the Paris terrorists, that was then raided by police. The whole back wall was blown out and floors collapsed, blast holes are also very visible around the windows. Can't really imagine what that must all have been like...
In my capacity as a sound engineer in the BBC's Radio Current Affairs department, I got to work on the Reith Lectures again this year. The first one was at Middle Temple Hall in London, the same venue we used for Hillary Mantel back in 2017.
I was leading the recording again, and this year the lecturer is Jonathan Sumption, the former Supreme Court Justice. Middle Temple Hall is an incredible venue, brimming with history as it is from its 400 years, it's actually fairly hideous acoustically! Every surface is reflective of sound, and it has a very high vaulted ceiling which means the whole place is reverb-tastic. Anyway, despite these challenges, I'm pretty happy with how the recording came out. You can judge for yourself, as it'll be on Radio 4 on May 21st ...

The moment I captured above is from our dress rehearsal day a couple of weeks before the actual event itself. This was after Jonathan had read through his lecture, and pictured are the producer, Jonathan, the presenter of the Reith Lectures Anita Anand, and with his back to the camera is the programme's editor.
Having done my sound duties at this stage I was vaguely free to wander round and grab a few snaps with my little Sony RX100 compact camera ...

In 1994, South Africa abolished its apartheid regime and Nelson Mandela became the country’s first democratically elected president. After decades of white minority rule, a new constitution granted equal right to all South Africans, regardless of skin colour, culture, religion or sexual orientation. The generation born after 1994 are the Born Frees.
Mandela maintained a keen focus on young people and their role in society. He saw them as carriers of hope, and as future leaders with a responsibility to make South Africa a better place to live: a Rainbow Nation with equal opportunities for all. “Mindful of your own challenges, you must continue to promote the principle of relentless freedom and democracy,” said Mandela.
For over a decade, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien has portrayed the Born Frees; through interviews, photography and film. Though equality exists on paper, in reality, South Africa struggles with issues such as high unemployment rates, economic inequality, and wounds from the apartheid era. Many young people experience racism and discrimination. Did the dream of the Rainbow Nation ever come true, or is it just a myth?
Ilvy Njiokiktjien (b. Netherlands, 1984) has worked as a current affairs and documentary photographer in a number of countries, focusing especially on Africa. Her work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, TIMES and Der Spiegel. Born Free has received numerous awards, and in 2013, Njiokiktjien became Netherland’s first National Photographer. The images in the exhibition were taken between 2009 – 2019. Foto: Mari Hildung

Once again, there was a news story today about Addiction - whoever is selecting these ODC topics certainly has their pulse on current affairs! :)
The story was titled ‘Is Addiction a Disease?’, and described how, according to some sources, addiction is a pandemic disease driven by our high-stress culture and existential angst:
news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9725000/9725162.stm
Whether addiction is chemically based, or something much more subtle like your mobile phone, the disease model is certainly a controversial one. There is no denying, however, that there is a fundamental change in the relationship between human beings and their social environment, leading to the progressive replacement of people by material objects.
Sorry for the heavy content but one that is worth some thought I’m sure you’ll agree. Anyway, I shall leave you with this final thought -
“Everyone is addicted to something” …

From the archive, and following on from the previous image - I'm on the promanade in Benghazi, waiting for Gaddafi (and looking quite relaxed about it) in March 1973. I haven't a clue who took this photograph - but all these decades later the sideburns, the purple shirt, the leather coat, the Chelsea boots are something of an embarrassment... but the style at the time.
By the way, that's Benghazi's former Catholic cathedral in the background. It was built between 1929 and 1939 and was once the largest church in Africa. It later became a headquarters for the Arab Socialist Union and today it's ramshackle and derelict.

"Düsseldorf-Hafen means "Düsseldorf harbor" in German, and is also the name of the Düsseldorf district in which the harbour is located.
The borough covers 3.85 km2, but there were only 212 inhabitants in the year 2000. With 55 inhabitants per km², this is the thinnest density of population in Düsseldorf.
For decades the harbour has been an area of workers, industry and trade. But after the Mannesmann company had discontinued its tube production in Düsseldorf, parts of the central harbour lost their reason for being (another harbour is in Düsseldorf-Reisholz). As a result the eastern part of the harbour started to be redeveloped.
Mainly third sector businesses were attracted to move to the Hafen: media companies, but also fashion and design offices. One of the first new residents to the so-called Media Harbor was Westdeutscher Rundfunk with its current affairs TV and radio studios. There is also Düsseldorf's local radio station, Antenne Düsseldorf, in the harbour. CNN used to have an office there. One of the largest cinemas of Düsseldorf is in the Hafen. The Landtag (State parliament) of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rheinturm are situated right next to the harbour.
The Hafen district itself contains some spectacular post-modern architecture, most famously the three twisted constructions by renowned architect Frank Gehry, Neuer Zollhof. There are also many restaurants, bars, and a few clubs, which make the Hafen a prominent lifestyle district. But one of its main attractions, the beach bar "Monkey's Island", had to close for the sake of one further newly planned upscale hotel.
The western part of the harbor is still industrially used, but there are plans for further redevelopment with the construction of high end apartment buildings."

The tall logo at the top of today's abandoned building is a remnant of glorious times. But these have passed. National and international press agencies sent the current affairs from here to the whole world. Today the high-rise is rotting away. The police has to move in regularly because of copper thieves and vandals. And this time because of us.

Spending numerous hours on the internet daily, I use it for socialising, researching and keeping up with current affairs. This has lead me to a psychological interest in social media and how technology has changed the way we represent ourselves within the digital world, both aesthetically and integrationally, through a number of different expressive visuals like photography and written text.
My practice combines collaborating various surfaces with mixed media to represent what we immerse ourselves in digitally. I’m creating these visuals on 2 dimensional planes to express my emotional and personal response of my own development within the current digital era producing that fleeting moment of self awareness through the subject of Selfies and consciously edited portrayals that is shared daily on the internet.
We sit in front of the many different screens everyday, monitors, TV’s, tablets and mobile phones, and it is generally a solo experience. I am using my own impression to portray cyber space and how we fail to control where our online uploads and information goes. Using mirrors I am bouncing reflections within a confined space that I have constructed to have the same infinitive quality of the world wide web and to recapture that solitary experience within the space of the work.
