Castle Street, near the junction with High Street, Cardiff (Caerdydd), Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom, on Saturday 17th of June 2023.
About the photograph.
This is a photo of a lady in a colourful summer dress, here she is seen looking like she is taking a selfie of herself. She is one of the many people simply hanging around, waiting for the Pride parade to start. I spotted her doing this, and attempted to grab a shot, only to find this guy, part of the management team, walking across.
About the event.
Pride Cymru was previously called Cardiff Mardi Gras when it was formed in September 1999. It held annual festival in Bute Park. It became a registered charity in 2010, and starting from 2012, they held a parade through the city centre.
In 2014, Cardiff Mardi Gras was renamed to Pride Cymru, and had operated under the new name ever since the change of name.
Pride Cymru is in reality a weekend event, often called Pride Cymru Big Weekend, and attracts up to 50,000 people over the three days, with Saturdays having the parade through the city centre.
The route for the parade is approximately about more or less one mile in length, and would take anyone approximately up to an hour to complete the route.
Because I was doing photojournalism, trying to find interesting shots, therefore I often sometimes walk back and forth, up and down the parade, so it would take me about a couple of hours to do the photo-shoot.
That day was a very hot and strong sunny day, and I some sunburn.

Anchor Road, Bristol, South West of England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 9th of July 2022.
About the photograph.
At one time between 1987 to 1989, I did try taking photojournalism kind of photos of college students going on a march, while I was attending college. Since then, I have not done any photojournalism kind of photos for a few decades.
I would consider myself still inexperienced in the field of photojournalism, and the Bristol Pride was the first of a big current affairs event that I attended and took photograph.
I walked all the way from the starting point to the finishing point of the Pride parade, which took me about a couple of hours, allowing for the fact that I sometimes went back and forth. Normally everyone on the parade would take only about an hour to get to the end.
Once I reached the end, I decided to double back, and try to grab more shots.
Here, I find some of the emergency services, like the ambulances and police cars, bringing up the rear. They were at the rear end of the parade, maybe ready for any emergencies, specially as it was an extremely hot weather, and anyone could faint from the heat.
I thought of calling those shots The Back Up.
Those are some of the last shots of my 2022 Bristol Pride photo-shoots, after that, I went back to my car, and went to my friend’s home in Bristol, to stay and have a long rest. (I live like 60 miles away, would not be safe to drive home after too much sun.)
I hope I’ve done okay with those the event, if you want to see more of the Bristol Pride photos, there is an album on this subject in my Albums section.
About the event.
Bristol Pride is an annual festival held over couple of weeks, promoting equality for the various LGBT+ people, with a march through the city at a weekend.
The Bristol Pride started life in 1977 as a fundraiser for the local LGBT community, and evolved into an annual event held every year. There was a gap of only some years between 1994 to 2010 when it was restarted.
The 2022 march started at Castle Park, near Castle Street. The route took them past Cabot Circus, and went around the major shopping area by using The Horsefair and Union Street, and as they went down Union Street, they headed towards Castle Park. When they reached Castle Park, they turned into Wine Street, went into High Street, and into Baldwin Street, headed towards the A38 which is Anchor Road. This route took them into Canon’s Road, and ended up near the Bristol Aquarium.
The march was said to take about an hour, but as a photographer whom would go back and forth, up and down the line, looking for good shots, it took me at least a couple of hours to complete the route.
After the march, those whom bought tickets, can attend an evening musical festival at The Downs, approximately to the north-west of city centre. I did not attend this event, and by the time I got back to my friend’s home, I was worn out from the heat.

I assisted at the Falla event in Montreal last night. it is based on a tradition from Valencia, Spain.
The Fallas are enormous models made out of papier mache, wood and wax, and often characaturing Spanish social and political current affairs. The models are burnt on the night of 19 March in a festival of fire, fireworks and organized mayhem. Fireworks and firecrackers play a big role in any fiestas held in this region, and Fallas is no exception.
Happy World Photography Day!

I’m delighted beyond measure to say that my dear friend and erstwhile colleague, the author and television journalist Peter Taylor, has been appointed a CBE in the King’s New Year Honours. His well-deserved award is for services to journalism and to public broadcasting, and I couldn’t be happier to hear this news.
Peter (on the left, holding a BAFTA award – see later) reported frequently on the murderous ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, and he consequently became a trusted ‘go-to’ specialist on the subject. He went on to make many further television documentaries on conflicts and terrorism around the world, and is still much in demand for his expertise.
He and I – that’s me on the right – met at Thames Television in 1969, and we’ve been friends as well as colleagues ever since. I worked with him on many of the Northern Ireland programmes as well as on other subjects, including conflicts in the Middle East and a spate of aircraft hijackings.
Peter’s CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) is a fine recognition of the quality of his work over six decades. And his *BAFTA Special Award, presented in 2014, is one of the academy’s highest honours, recognising his outstanding contribution to factual and current affairs television.

So I have a little confession, I'm a junkie, a reality TV junkie. It's awful, I've seen them all from Jersey Shore to Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, you name it I've seen in. I pretend to be into acceptable things like books and current affairs but I really I just want to hear a bunch of spoiled LA kids whine over their boyfriends. I guess this is my attempt to justify what I'm about to say next.
I was watching an episode of Wife Swap USA.
I'm sorry, it's a brilliant show, it's heavily scripted and edited but that just makes it better. If you don't believe me watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERENCqOHJCA
In that very episode with King Curtis, the other family have this ritual where they take a picture of their dream home and tell themselves, this is where we'll live in five years. The parents were trying to teach their kids about the Power of Positive Thinking. Now because it's reality TV they took it WAY too far, they'd actually go to the house on a weekly basis and take a picture in front of it to remind themselves of their goal. Yeah...it's a bit much.
Well, here's my dream home. It's in Brooklyn, right next to a subway stop (wish I could remember which one) right by the flea market (wish I could remember which one). I took a (crappy) photo of these lovely houses and wished on a Brooklyn star that one day I'll be able to live there. Well, insert some positive thinking power, I WILL LIVE THERE and I'll let you know if it works out. I mean WHEN it works out :)

What draws them to the frontline?
She was joined by BBC journalist Yalda Hakim, documentary filmmaker Safa Al Ahmad, current affairs journalist Mina Al Oraibi, and Lebanese journalist and senior lecturer in international journalism at City University, Dr Zahera Harb.
Photos can be misleading sometimes. If you take this photo at the face value, you might think there were some kind of explosions happening at the stadium. In fact, this was captured at the beginning of the fireworks. It makes you wonder how an event could be manipulated with a photo captured at the right moment and angle. Something to think about when reading news of current affairs.

“The split red and blue on the flag shows how America is split by the current government. The faces represent other nations and the headphones represent America’s closed mindedness to other nations.”
--6th grade student artist’s own words written in Dec., 2005
This flag was exhibited on a bulletin board in 2005 at Capital Hill Gifted and Talented Magnet Shool in St. Paul. The student, who was in the 6th grade when he/she made this , is now a senior in High School. Previously I did not want to name the school for fear that it might alert federal agents to investigate and intimidate the teacher or the school for being "anti-american"! That was 6 years ago though . . There is a great debate below this image and the other images of other student's flags that deals with issues such as brainwashing kids with liberal political propaganda and patriotism, etc.

Betty Furness (1916-1994) was an American actress, consumer advocate, and current affairs commentator.
Elizabeth Mary Furness was born in 1916 in Manhattan, New York City. She was the daughter of wealthy business executive George Choate Furness and his wife Florence. She attended the Brearley School and Bennett Junior College. Furness made her stage debut in the school holidays in the title role of 'Alice in Wonderland'. She was a teenage model with the John Robert Powers agency. Noticed by a talent scout, she was signed to a film contract in 1932 by RKO Studios. Betty made her film debut with a bit part in Thirteen Women (George Archainbaud, 1932), starring Irene Dunne. However, her scenes were deleted before the film's release. In the following years, Furness appeared in mostly secondary roles in more than 35 films. Among her best-known films are Magnificent Obsession (John M. Stahl, 1935) with Irene Dunne and Robert Taylor, Swing Time (George Stevens, 1936) with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and Good Old Soak (J. Walter Ruben, 1937) starring Wallace Beery. At the end of the 1930s, her film career halted and she appeared on stage. She acted in Adelaide Heilbron's play, 'Something Gay', at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. At the end of the 1949s, she started to appear in TV shows.
In the USA, Betty Furness is best remembered as the highly paid television spokesperson for Westinghouse Electric Corporation. In 1948, Furness was performing in the television series Studio One, which was broadcast live. She filled in for an actor to promote Westinghouse products during the advertisement break and impressed the company with her easy and professional manner. They offered her a contract to promote their products and she thus became closely associated with them. Wikipedia: "Furness proved a successful spokeswoman because of her good looks and attractive, but neat and modest clothing, which she changed three times a day. She also proved strongly independent-minded about her appearance and image, refusing to adopt a stage name or wear an apron after Westinghouse offered these suggestions. She did, however, agree to wear a wedding ring on camera to appear more like a housewife. Furness also purchased all of her clothing herself, not wanting Westinghouse to decide her appearance for her. During the political party conventions in the 1952 presidential election, which was heavily sponsored by Westinghouse, Furness wore 28 different outfits, enough to become the subject of a Life Magazine story." In this function, she starred in the feature-length promotion film Ellis in Freedomland (Abby Berlin, 1952). Furness's contract with Westinghouse eventually resulted in her receiving an annual salary of $100,000 and her advertisements caused sales of the company's appliances to soar. In 1953, she appeared in her own daytime television series Meet Betty Furness, which was sponsored by Westinghouse. In 1959, a new Westinghouse president decided to drop Furness, possibly because he wished to impart his own ideas on the company, and suggested getting a new, slightly younger spokeswoman.
Betty Furness later was New York City's Director of Consumer Affairs for many years and appeared as the consumer affairs expert on NBC's Today for 16 years. In 1990, Furness was treated for stomach cancer and cut down her schedule on The Today Show to four days. NBC used this as an excuse to fire her two years later, along with a network decision to change their consumer reporting to a more tabloid-style format. Furness was not happy with her termination and cited it as an example of age discrimination. She expressed her desire to continue working, but a recurrence of stomach cancer prevented her from doing so. Betty Furness died at age 78 of stomach cancer in 1994 in New York City. She was married four times with three men. Her husbands were composer-conductorJohnny Green (1937-1943; divorced), radio announcer Bud Ernest (1945-1946 and 1946-1950; his death), and Leslie Midgley (1967-1994; her death). She had a child with Green. Her granddaughter is Liza Snyder, from the Television series Yes, Dear and Man with a Plan.

The veteran reporter Peter Taylor has been covering events in Northern Ireland for more than 40 years now, and has written numerous books on the subject.
He and I have been friends for even longer – and for much of the 1970s we worked together in Northern Ireland on countless This Week current affairs programmes for Thames Television, then part of the ITV Network.
Under the legendary Jeremy Isaacs, Thames Television’s Controller of Programmes, This Week led the way for its coverage of The Troubles throughout the ‘70s. In 1980 Peter moved to the BBC, where he has continued to make award-winning documentaries not only about Northern Ireland but also on intelligence matters and Islamic terrorism.
Peter is the recipient of a John Grierson Award for Best Historical Documentary; a Royal Television Society Lifetime Achievement Award; and a BAFTA Special Award in recognition of his career and contribution to factual and current affairs television. He also received the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Prize for his lifetime’s contribution to Anglo-Irish understanding and he holds the OBE for services to broadcast journalism.
On Sunday at 10pm, BBC Two will broadcast Peter’s personal retrospective of his time in Northern Ireland. For me, because I spent so much of the '70s treading that beat with him, it will be unmissable; I’ve booked my front row seat.
♦ For anyone with a long memory, the title music to the This Week programme is here; formally known as the Intermezzo from the Karelia Suite by Sibelius; still one of the most thrilling pieces of classical music I've ever known.
See also my Flickr album 1970s Northern Ireland.
As an actress, she is best known for her role as Carole Sands in the ITV soap Crossroads from 1981 to 1984. She played a schoolgirl in the 1978 cult British horror film Killer's Moon, and filmed an interview for the 2008 DVD release. She also appeared in the all-star black comedy film Eat the Rich in 1987 and in the Only Fools and Horses episode "Go West Young Man" in 1981. She provided the voices of Lillie Lightship, Sally Seaplane and Pearl in Tugs, a show created by Robert D. Cardona, David Mitton and the original model makers of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends. On stage she has played the title role in Educating Rita, co-starring with Norman Bowler, and for several years in the 1990s worked as part of Derek Nimmo's touring company, performing all over the world. She played several parts in The Bill, most recently in 2008, and was an extra in the Sex and the City film.

A protest outside the Department of Transport to ask for better safety measures for cyclists in London.
Düsseldorf-Hafen means the harbour of Düsseldorf. More than that, Hafen is the name of the Düsseldorf district in which the habour is located.
The borough covers 3.85 km2, but there were only 212 inhabitants in the year 2000. With 55 inhabitants per km², this is the thinnest density of population in Düsseldorf.
For decades the harbour has been an area of workers, industry and trade. But after the Mannesmann company had discontinued its tube production in Düsseldorf, parts of the central harbour lost their reason for being (another harbour is in Düsseldorf-Reisholz). As a result the eastern part of the harbour started to be redeveloped.
Mainly third sector businesses were attracted to move to the Hafen: media companies, but also fashion and design offices. One of the first new residents to the so-called Media Harbour was Westdeutscher Rundfunk with its current affairs TV and radio studios. There is also Düsseldorf's local radio station, Antenne Düsseldorf, in the harbour. CNN used to have an office there. One of the largest cinemas of Düsseldorf is in the Hafen. The Landtag (State parliament) of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rheinturm are situated right next to the harbour.
The Hafen district itself contains some spectacular post-modern architecture, most famously three twisted constructions by Frank Gehry. Other than that there are many restaurants, bars, and a few clubs, which make the Hafen a prominent lifestyle district. But one of its main attractions, the beach bar "Monkey's Island", had to close for the sake of one further newly planned upscale hotel.
The western part of the harbour is still industrially used, but there are plans for further redevelopment with the construction of high end apartment buildings.
