These are the 58 books I read in 2013, starting with a biography or a remarkable 19th/20th century documentary photographer of Indian cultures (January, bottom row) to Bill Bryson's take on the summer of 1927 (December, top left). Altogether they're about equal parts science, biography, and northwest history with some comedy and sports thrown in. Not much fiction this year.

The best current affairs: The Big Truck that Went By (about the Haiti rescue efforts) by Jonathan Katz. The best history: Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher by Timothy Egan. Most poignant photography collection: Dear Photograph (I loved the captions) by Taylor Jones. The most interesting science (well, amateur science anyway): On Looking by Alexandra Horowitz. Most interesting Northwest-related book (but not as good as I had hoped): Kicking and Dreaming by Ann and Nancy Wilson (aka Heart).

So in my day job as a studio manager at BBC Radio Current Affairs, I'm part of the team that records the Reith Lectures for Radio 4. The first one was up in Manchester last Monday evening at the Hallé St. Peters hall.

Usually at these events when we do them we don't get any pictures, and I thought I'd take along my Fuji X-E2 this time and try and grab a few shots if possible. Once the event was underway, there wasn't much scope for taking photographs, but I did manage to fire off a couple of frames of Hilary Mantel whilst she was delivering the first of this years' lectures.

This was with the 56mm f/1.2, which is a great lens by all accounts. My plan for using the electronic shutter mode to enable me to take pictures silently was slightly scuppered once a lighting guy had set up some LED lighting either side of the stage. As I took my first image I was aware of some very noticeable banding across the image. This is due to the interaction between the refresh rate of the lights and the way electronic shutters work. I didn't want to switch back to the mechanical shutter as the noise of this might have been distracting. Anyway, this shot was originally a portrait format shot and I've heavily cropped into it to turn it into a landscape one, but this also minimises the appearance of the banding.

Later, back in the hotel, I did some Googling around the artificial light/electronic shutter problem and discovered I might have been able to eliminate the banding if I'd used a shutter speed of 1/50th which would somehow have been in sync with the 50Hz refresh rate of the lights (or something like that - I don't totally understand the physics of it!). Anyway, I know what to do in future now ...

Also on The Science Show 5 June 2010 Threats to Western Port Bay

John Clarke describes Western Port Bay, which lies east of Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay. Within a short space of time swamps have been drained, mangroves and seagrass have been removed, and silt has washed into the bay from nearby agricultural lands and eroding cliffs. This environment was once used as a breeding ground for fish. Now, the area is seriously degraded

Second generation biofuels (Queensland R&D) - relates to Gulf Oil Spill

The disastrous oil spill gushing out into the Gulf of Mexico highlights the cost of our dependence on oil. Since late April, up to nineteen thousand barrels or 3 million litres a day have escaped from the ruptured underwater well, the largest oil spill in US history. There's an increased risk at the tail end of this resource and we are starting to pay a very heavy price. So the weights are really going to come on to biofuels, despite the food verses fuel debate. While there are significant improvements in first generation biofuels, an Australian company is at the forefront of revolutionary efforts in second generation biofuels. These could effectively double the productivity of farm land and produce significantly high quality and high quantity feed for animals

26 TOILETS TO SAVE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN

Toilets as status symbols - (and cheaper than a cellphone! & waterless & recycles)

An estimated 2.5 billion people in the world do not have proper sanitation, resulting in the death of millions of children every year. But cheap, water-less options are already on the market. We just need to make the toilet a status symbol and sanitation sexy. That's the message from Jack Sim. Sim is a merchant and manufacturer from Singapore who retired almost 10 years ago to set up the WTO, the World Toilet Organisation. The WTO has now got 203 member organisations in 56 countries.

Reduced biodiversity directly affects human health

Aaron Bernstein argues that biodiversity directly affects human health. He says we rely on a diverse range of organisms for the production of drugs. High-density living in cities and industrial-scale farming have created ideal conditions for the spread of infectious diseases such as SARS and H1N1. Loss of habitat and climate change are the major factors contributing to the loss of biodiversity. Species extinction is currently occurring at a rate 1,000 times the background rate; that's almost as fast as when the Earth was hit by an asteroid 65 million years ago.

The light in darkness: Finnish impressions of endless days and nights

'The most important thing about darkness is to be in peace.' The people of Finland live through long, dark winters where the sun does not appear for months. They have developed ways of coping, like using artificial sun lamps inside or swimming under the ice. Yet in fighting the darkness have they lost touch with nature and increased their chances of depression, alcoholism and suicide?

Current Affair was at the Cobain memorial, filming people and getting sworn at by lots of people too. At some point Kurt's aunt was there talking to them. (This is not her in the pic, though)

Speaking of Kurt's relatives, Courtney showed up a while after this and was giving away things to some of the fans. I was out of film and heading home by then.

A mock-up of a Japanese Wide Show (current affairs and entertainment program) emphasising the features that demonstrate timtak/Nacalian theory of Japanese culture: that Japanese culture is predominantly visual or imago-centric.

1) The faces of the commentators are seen displayed during the parts of the current affairs program that are filmed on location, so that viewers can SEE the expressions, and see the feelings that are being felt. (Yasuko's face, in the top right hand corner)

2) The Japanese is given subtitles so that the viewers can *see* what is being said.

In the West, the viewers are provided with copious amounts of canned laughter so that so that they can know when to laugh. The principle is the same - the folks at home need to be told when to laugh - but while Japanese are stimulated by visual images, Westerners are comparatively "(logo) phonocentric" (Derrida).

In some Western News shows there are also teletypes providing extra linguistic information rather than a subtitles to what the presenters are saying. The majority of Westerners do not need to see what is being spoken, but they do like to feast upon as much linguistic information as possible.

Istanbul Istanbul, a novel by Burhan Sönmez and translated from Turkish by Ümit Hussein, has won a new international literature prize launched by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The prize, awarded at a ceremony at the Bank’s headquarters in London on 10 April, was created last year by the EBRD, in partnership with the British Council and the London Book Fair (LBF).

The €20,000 prize will be split between the author and translator.

The EBRD Literature Prize champions the literary richness of its regions of operations, which include almost 40 countries from Morocco to Mongolia, Estonia to Egypt. It was also created to illustrate the importance of literary translation and to introduce the depth and variety of the voices and creativity from these regions to a wider global audience.

Set after a military coup, the winning novel is a love song to Istanbul inspired by the author’s own experiences. Below the ancient streets of Istanbul, four prisoners sit, awaiting their turn at the hands of their interrogators. When they are not being subjected to unimaginable violence, the condemned tell one another stories about the city, shaded with love and humour, to pass the time. In a style that resembles Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th-century classic The Decameron, the prisoners’ narratives slowly turn into a story of the city itself, increasingly blurring the line between life above and below ground.

Rosie Goldsmith, chair of the judging panel, said: “Istanbul Istanbul is a life-affirming novel of profound humanity and exquisite writing. And Burhan Sönmez is a major writer, a highly deserving winner of this major new prize. Yes, the novel is set in a prison cell, yes, it’s set in Turkey, but at no point does it condemn or take a position: it’s our story too. The four protagonists are on a quest to find kindness and beauty in a world of cruelty. They are fully rounded, real characters with flaws and oddities, gripping us not with accounts of violence and torture but through their humour and conversation. Burhan Sönmez wears his immense learning lightly and together with his literary companion Ümit Hussein, his outstanding translator, they have created a prize-winning novel of great passion and poetry.”

Suma Chakrabarti, President of the EBRD, said: “Through the EBRD Literature Prize, we recognise the work of scores of authors across the nearly 40 countries where the Bank works – most of whose voices would have remained unheard had it not been for the translators and publishers who bring these works to the English-speaking world. But our prize is meant to go beyond recognition. It is meant to promote the wealth, depth and variety of culture and history in the countries where the EBRD invests.”

Burhan Sönmez is an internationally prize-winning novelist who worked as a human rights lawyer in Istanbul and was a founder of the social-activist culture organisation TAKSAV (Foundation for Social Research, Culture and Art). Sönmez is a member of Turkish PEN and English PEN. He is a founding member of the 'Writers Circle' at PEN International and currently lectures in Literature and Novel at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara.

Ümit Hussein is a British translator and interpreter of Turkish Cypriot origin. She has translated the work of Nevin Halıcı, Mehmet Yashin and Ahmet Altan, among others.

The two runner-up titles received €2,000, also split between author and translator. These were All the World’s a Stage by Boris Akunin, translated from Russian by Andrew Bromfield, and Belladonna by Daša Drndic, translated from Croatian by Celia Hawkesworth. All were present at the award ceremony, where the three finalist authors and translators discussed their books and the art of translation.

These titles were chosen from the original longlist of 12 titles by the judges.

A special event will also be held at the London Book Fair at 11.30 on 11 April 2018. Entitled ‘Whose Prize is it Anyway?’, featuring the prize winners and the judges, the panel will be discussing the benefit of literary prizes, the need to read more literature in translation and the role the EBRD Literature Prize plays in the current international cultural arena. This year the LBF market focus is on the Baltic states, one of the EBRD regions of operations.

See all information/announcements of the EBRD Literature Prize.

About the EBRD Literature Prize:

The prize provides a unique opportunity to reflect the culture and creativity of almost 40 economies where the Bank invests, from Morocco to Mongolia, Estonia to Egypt. The prize is awarded to the best work of literary fiction translated from the original language into English and published by a UK publisher in the 18 months prior to 15 November 2017. Divided equally between author and translator, it champions the art of translation as well as the extraordinary richness, depth and variety of arts and history in the countries in the Bank’s region. The EBRD Literature Prize is a project of the Bank’s Community Initiative.

About the EBRD:

The EBRD was set up in 1991 after the fall of the Berlin Wall to meet the challenge of an extraordinary moment in Europe’s history: the collapse of communism. It is a multilateral bank with almost 70 shareholders which promotes the development of the private sector and entrepreneurial initiatives in 37 economies across three continents.

About the judges:

Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at Oxford University. His most recent book, The Silk Roads: A New History of the World, was an international number 1 bestseller.

Gabriel Gbadamosi is a poet, playwright, essayist and broadcaster. He was a Judith E. Wilson Fellow for creative writing at Cambridge University. His London novel Vauxhall won the 2011 Tibor Jones Pageturner Prize.

Lucy Hannah is a writer and producer who founded Commonwealth Writers in 2011. She has worked for a range of organisations on communication for development projects, mostly in areas of conflict and post-conflict, including South Sudan, Chechnya and Afghanistan.

Rosie Goldsmith, chair of the judging panel, is an award-winning journalist specialising in arts and current affairs in the UK and abroad, and a champion of international literature. She is Founder and Director of the European Literature Network.

Though water wheels were simultaneously developed all over the ancient world, the earliest evidence of the structure was discovered in a Syrian mosaic dating from the second century A.D.

These amazingly beautiful water wheels are several centuries old and the term noria is derived from Arabic which describes the scooping up of water into aqueducts which transported the water further to all the fields.

Only 17 norias still stand in the Syrian city of Hamah, mostly along the Orontes river, which cuts through the city. In February 2012 parts of the norias were covered in red paint to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Syria's attack on the city, when then-President Hafez al-Assad, the father of current leader Bashar al-Assad, deployed tanks and aerial bombs to quash government opposition in the Sunni Islamist community. The attack killed an estimated 30,000 citizens and flattened entire neighborhoods, and the Hamah massacre still ranks as one of the most brutal events in modern Arab history. The sound of the norias heard throughout the city, is haunting. When the wheel turns, it makes a sound that residents liken to a human cry. Most are no longer operational, standing as tourist landmarks that commemorate the city’s tragic history. (ref: Good News)

In the run up to International Women's Day, Channel 4's International Editor, Lindsey Hilsum, asks women reporters with roots in the Arab world how women are changing the face of war reporting. As a founder of The Marie Colvin Journalists' Circle which was launched in February of this year, Hilsum is part of a network mentoring young women journalists in the Middle East. What draws them to the frontline?

She was joined by BBC journalist Yalda Hakim, documentary filmmaker Safa Al Ahmad, current affairs journalist Mina Al Oraibi, and Lebanese journalist and senior lecturer in international journalism at City University, Dr Zahera Harb.

China is to launch its first unmanned probe scheduled to land on the moon, the first spacecraft in 37 years to touch down on the lunar surface. Chang’e-3 comprises a six-wheeled rover designed to deploy from the lander section and explore the moon independently.

This preview story for tonite's installment of the ABC television program Four Corners gives me more than a few good tiny reasons to champion civility on the internet. Thankyou Quentin McDermott & Four Corners. Thankyou ABC.

Last year I tried reading my favourite newspaper every day of the working week. Given the time it took to get through the whole paper I found by Friday I had a backlog of about three days worth of papers to read.

So now I just read the Monday edition which includes post match analysis of the weekends football matches. Not particularly enjoyable to read when you support Manchester United, we're experiencing one of our worst seasons this year.
