Just a hotel in a capital city with flags on display making for a good night-time street scene. History, religion, politics and current affairs dictate that some spectators see much more than that. For me I saw a hotel in a capital city with flags on display making for a good night-time street scene. It was a bright moment in the night on North Bridge in Edinburgh as I enjoyed the Spring season warming up the great natural beauty of Scotland. For others the ructions roused around Brexit are keeping history, religion and politics in a very much hotter heat than March and April can ever bring and a legacy of turmoil that will be much longer lasting than the average remembrance of time from one month to another month. Fate and facts are being created right now to be briefly be held in the spotlights and to be slowly allowed to flutter away in the continuing passing breezes.

After 16 years on the run, Ratko Mladić is now where he should be – in a jail, awaiting trial for genocide and other war crimes. While this monster and his swaggering soldiers were rampaging across the Balkans, for a brief period I was there, producing television news reports.
This was Vukovar, which was all but totally destroyed by Bosnian Serb forces in 1991. With my film crew I got in a few days after the final onslaught, in which more than 3,000 men, women and children were killed. To this day I’m still shocked to have witnessed such total and depraved inhumanity.
Further images from those days are here.

Ronnie Biggs, one of the 'Great Train Robbers' of 1963, was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for his part in this audacious crime, but he escaped from jail, went on the run and in 1974 he hoved up in Brazil, where he fathered a child – thereby making extradition to the UK impossible.
At the time, I was a journalist working for This Week, Thames Television's international current affairs programme in London. I flew out to try and set up an interview with him, but because he'd already signed an exclusive contract with a tabloid newspaper, the answer was 'no'. So all I got was this quickly-grabbed snapshot outside his flat in Rua Prof Gastão Baiana, Rio de Janeiro. With his eyes firmly focused on the ground, it's hardly an award-winning image – but given the circumstances, it was better than nothing and it captures a moment in time.
The Great Train Robbery was a sensation in 1963, not just because of the audacity of the operation, but also because the 15-strong gang escaped with £2.6 million in used banknotes – a staggering amount of money at the time and the equivalent of around £50 million today.
Eventually, Biggs returned to the UK voluntarily in 2001 when he was in need of medical treatment. It's worth stating that he remained a controversial and notorious criminal right through to his death on 18th December 2013 at the age of 84.

Photographs taken on Saturday Febuary 4th as Police escorted members of the English Defence League (EDL) as they marched holding banners aloft during a demonstration through the streets of Leicester city center. Estimates say Up to two thousand members of the EDL gathered in the centre of Leicester, personally I think it was around a thousand as an opposing demonstration by anti-fascists UAF (Unite Against fascismheld) was held nearby.
I was shooting the events as they unfolded for Getty Images.

Howard Anderson was a leading television journalist. Here is his obituary in BBC's Ariel magazine:
Howard Anderson, who died this week, was one of the most colourful characters to work in news and current affairs at the BBC and ITN in the 1980s and 1990s.
A talented programme editor, he worked on Newsnight and Channel Four News as well as editing and producing current affairs programmes for Channel Four, first for ITN and later as an independent producer.
I first met him on Newsnight when I arrived as editor in 1985. We had agreed to let Time Out magazine do a profile of the programme and it was not going well - the Time Out journalist clearly found us a dull, earnest bunch. Then he met Howard, who was that night's programme editor - a bright green shirt, equally colourful language, a wicked grin and a steely determination not to let anyone interfere with his running order.
From that moment on they were inseparable and as Howard descended into the control room at 10.45 still not sure which of the many items he had commissioned for that evening he was going to run it was clear that the article was going to be A Day in The Life of Howard Anderson - and a pretty exciting and entertaining day at that. And in the end, that night's Newsnight was very good, as well.
Howard went on to ITN where worked successfully on Channel 4 News, on the ITV service (famously going open-ended with ITN's skeleton overnight crew on the first night of the Gulf war) and for a number of Channel Four current affairs programmes - most notably as editor of the channel's new Parliament Programme set up to take advantage of the televising of the Commons.
Although working with Howard was never dull, and occasionally explosive, he was a thoughtful and highly intelligent journalist. His bark was far worse than his bite - he was actually a very kind man as well as a very clever one and people loved working for him.
He bore his final cruel illness with great courage, supported by his wife Fiona and their daughters. All his friends share their sorrow that such a vivid and lovable man has gone - but we will also remember him, as he would have wished, with a smile.
Later in the week, I came across another headstone memorial to a journalist, Bob Williams at Seething in Norfolk.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I stood in Steeple Gidding churchyard, looking southwards into the heat-hazed sunshine, picking out spires in the mist on the ridges. Where were they? I didn't know. it was wonderful to be here. About three miles off in the valley I could see the vast blockish tower of Hamerton church, so I got on my bike and headed towards it, reaching All Saints, which, as I'd been told previously, turned out to be locked without a keyholder notice.A big tower, castellated stone parapets and aisles. You reach the churchyard across a 16th century bridge, very picturesque. A small group of people in the churchyard regarded me with suspicion, didn't respond to my hello, and said nothing when I tried the locked door. Perhaps this told me all I needed to know about Hamerton parish church. Soon, I could hear the roar of the A1(M) and headed deliberately towards it through Upton.
==================
A pleasant cycle ride in the Huntingdonshire Wolds, on the brightest, warmest day of the year so far. I set the alarm for 5am and got up to make coffee, have breakfast and see the world grow light. At a quarter to six I cycled down to Ipswich station and caught the 0600 train to Peterborough. Arriving at 0730 I lugged my bike across the long bridge to the far platform to catch the train to Huntingdon, where I arrived at 0800. Huntingdon is on the east coast main line, but this is a small station - the woman inspecting tickets looked at mine in disbelief. "You came from Ipswich this morning? You must have started early!"
I pushed my bike into the High Street and Market Place, and bought provisions for the day. The market was being set up, and few of the shops were open. It was pleasing to walk around a small town getting itself ready for the day when I had already travelled almost a hundred miles. I set out along the ancient Great North Road, the Roman Ermine Street, for a cycle ride in the Wolds. Over the course of the next eight hours I would visit 17 churches, of which I saw the inside of eight. It must be said that most of the others had keyholder notices, but I wanted to get as many churches for my money as possible (£35 for a day return!), and so only went for a key twice. Having said that, it was clear that west Cambridgeshire, the former Huntingdonshire, is not as good for open churches as south Cambridgeshire or east Cambridgeshire. My real goal for the day was Nicholas Ferrar and T S Eliot's Little Gidding, but there would be other delights and surprises in store. It would be a day of stone churches and stone spires, of gargoyles and grotesques, of almost no stained glass at all, medieval or otherwise, except for one fabulous moment. It would be a day of hazy hills and lots of spires off in the distance that brought A E Houseman to mind.

I used to enjoy reading broadsheet newspapers. I gradually stopped reading them because they takes ages to read and I don't have time and I find them to be quite expensive.
The independent have launched a concise format newspaper, simply called 'i'.
I like its format and it provides a decent summary of events. The only problem is trying to find a newsagents that actually sells it. I have to make a trip out to either the main Tesco or Sainsburys supermarket to get a copy.
