This is a sample of curly maple. This grain is very challenging to plane with a machine or by hand.

Notice the fine curls and finish that the card scraper has produced.

Remember, the scraper was only stroked on the file, not honed, nor burnished,

We call him curly, but I don't know what he is. Bought him from Ikea a couple of years ago. Has great curly leaves, although he's getting a little gangly now - not quite sure how to 'tame' him!
