If it's early July in Göteborg, it must be time for the annual Partille Cup.
Now in it's 38th year, the Partille Cup is the world's largest youth handball tournament, with nearly 900 teams from over 50 nations descending upon Göteborg for nearly a week of competition.
Given the size of the tournament, many of the early round matches are played outdoors. In 2007, this meant rain and very slippery courts. In 2008, it means (so far) sun, sun, sun. Great for the players, slightly less fun for the photographers, as well, more shadows....

A few months ago, the company I work for decided to "go green" and ditched the styrofoam cups and plates and the plastic utensils in favor of paper and... whatever you call plastic made from corn. The eating utensils "made from plants" are only marginally more useful than they would be if they were cardboard, but this cup gets a big thumbs up.
Twice a year, some of the biggest and most famous super-size sailing yachts gather for a friendly race called The Superyacht Cup. The December 2008 race, held in Antigua, was marked by stormy skies and seas, but the yachts and their crews persevered. See more photos at www.madmariner.com

The body of the cup, which comes from the former Benedictine monastery of St Veit at Herrieden near Ansbach in Franconia, consists of an ostrich egg. Ostrich eggs were highly prized as exotic rarities both in the secular world of Kunstkammer and cabinets of curiosities and in ecclesiastical contexts. The Gothic mount of the present cup, with its spiral cap, chain and adoring angels, suggests that it was used as a reliquary or as a container for sacred liquids, such as water from the river Jordan or holy ointments
