Starch is a natural polymeric carbohydrate consisting of glycosidic bond-linked glucose units. Depending on its botanical source, the size, the shape, and the morphology of starch semicrystalline particles are different. Natural starch is cheap and recyclable. It is a raw material for many products in food industrial production. There are two main types of starch polymers: amylopectin and amylose. The ratio of amylose to amylopectin in starch varies due to the botanical origin.

The molecular weight of starch is high, and the intramolecular hydrogen bonds make it difficult for starch to dissolve in most solvents. The literature has reported that only dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 4-methylmorpholine 4-oxide (NMMO), and ionic liquids are able to effectively dissolve starch, of which the most soluble and cheapest is DMSO. To expand the applications of starch, it is necessary to chemically modify the raw starch to improve its hydrophobicity, film-forming properties, and tensile resistance.

When the amylose helices are dissolved in a mixture of water and DMSO, the starch maintains a random coil conformation. Therefore, DMSO and DMSO/water mixture are applied to dissolve starch for the electrospinning.

A study has analyzed the quantitative relationship between fiber diameter and electrospinning parameters, such as concentration, applied high voltage, spinning distance, and flow rate. According to the response surface analysis, starch concentration has the greatest impact on fiber diameter. The ratios of both the voltage to distance and the polymer concentration to distance are essential to predict the fiber diameter.

Under ambient conditions, DMSO does not evaporate sufficiently, so DMSO-dissolved starch solutions fail to deposit on the grounded collector. Wet electrospinning, a modified electrospinning setup, is designed to overcome this problem. Starch is added to a 95% DMSO aqueous solution to form a 15% (w/w) polymer solution. The average diameter of starch fibers by wet electrospinning is on the micrometer scale. To improve the water stability and crystallinity of starch fibers, they are placed into a 50% (v/v) ethanol aqueous solution and then heated at 70℃ for 1h as post spinning treatments. Afterward, the fibers are immersed into a 25% (v/v) glutaraldehyde (GTA) aqueous solution to crosslink.

In a quiet and naive SEM session of a hydrogel sample made of polyacrylic acid, an unexpected battle arises. Beyond suspicion, the hydrogel-made horse was hiding a handful of Greeks. It is a bloodshed; the Trojans took the bait and lost the war.

The SEM micrograph represents the edge of a piece of PAA hydrogel where large aggregates of particles can be seen. This arises from the fact that during the formation of the hydrogel, only the stable particles contributed to the physical crosslink of the network, thanks to their higher mobility and active sites availability. As a result, aggregated particles are not internalized in the structure and are segregated at the boundary of the hydrogel.

Bishop Harold has instituted the Revd Peter Bourke as the rector of St Jude’s, Ballynafeigh.

 

Peter takes up the reins in the Ormeau Road parish after serving for 5 years as Associate Minister in St Elizabeth’s, Dundonald. The rector of St Elizabeth’s, the Revd Tim Anderson, was the preacher at the service on Monday 3 July 2017.

 

Parishioners, family and friends from different chapters of Peter’s life came to support him on this special occasion, including colleagues from the Church of England and Crosslinks.

 

Peter is 37 years old and is married to Sarah. Together they have three young children – 2 girls and a boy – ranging in age from 9 months to 6 years old.

 

Peter became a Christian as a child through the influence of his parents and the local church. He grew in his love and knowledge of Christ through Crosslinks camps where he also served as a leader and met his wife!

 

After graduating from Queen’s University, Belfast, Peter left for England where he lived and served at churches in London and Cheshire before his ordination training at Oak Hill College (London).

 

He was ordained in 2009 and served a curacy in the Church of England on the Wirral (Merseyside), before moving back to Northern Ireland in 2012.

 

Peter longs to see Christians grow and share their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He says: “My prayer as I start at St Jude’s, Ballynafeigh is that I may be a faithful pastor–teacher putting into practice God’s Word.”

 

‘Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.’ (1 Peter 5:2–3).

There's an internationally known yodeling star from Maine who's passed on but his daughter is a Jewel .

Yodeling Slim Clark is known the world over (still Very Big in Europe ) as a Maine music legend and was at one time a regular @ the East Benton Fiddler's Convention of years past. His daughter, much like her dad yodels up some songs to the children inviting them up on stage, teaching them the finer aspects to having fun with/while yodeling. it worked!

Here we have Engine 202's rods, pistons, crosslinks, wheels and more. 202 is a steam locomotive located at the Hagerstown City Park, and from my most recent visit to it, it's in much rougher shape than it was just a couple years ago. This K-2 Pacific Type was built in 1912 by Baldwin and mostly carried passengers and baggage between Baltimore and Hagerstown and was retired in 1953. It's under cover, but even a roof over it's head can't fully protect it from the elements.

Crosslink Road near Rock Quarry

GBRf class 66 diesel locomotive 66719 hauls "The London Crosslink" railtour through the disused Primrose Hill railway station in Camden.

The Anglia Railways operated 'Crosslink' services between Basingstoke and points in East Anglia was supposed to provide a Cross - London service in advance of Crossrail but was terminated after less than two years operation. The irregular schedule, with often huge gaps in the service meant that it was not especially popular and was quietly abandoned.

The lack of consistent destinations didn't help either, with the six services variously terminated at Stratford, Chelmsford, Witham, Colchester and Ipswich.

Here after an overnight dusting of snow the one service that covered the whole route heads for the next stop at Witham.

Class 66/7 No.66719 METRO-LAND arrives at Ipswich to form 1Z50 12:05 to Basingstoke,London Crosslink Charter on Sunday 27th July 2014.The train ran one way only for a fare of £20.

This device measures the thickness of the cornea by using ultrasound waves. A probe is placed against a numbed cornea and the device returns the thickness in micrometers (µm). A typical cornea has a thickness of about 540 µm. In keratonus patients it can be dramatically lower, I remember one of my eyes measuring 350 µm and being uneligible for corneal crosslinking.
