NOTE added 3/4/2011 - OC Register reported yesterday that 'Quiet Zones' have been established at 16 railroad crossings through Orange: "In a Quiet Zone, trains do not have to sound their horns unless there is an emergency." Work on establishing these Quiet Zones -- such as the one shown here at the Meats Avenue crossing -- began in 2009 and finished last January, and included "signage, striping, installment of signals, raised pavement markers, automatic pedestrian and vehicular gates, modified roadway medians, fencing gates, hand railings and concrete crossing panels."

Nothing overly special here - photo opportunities and inspiration have both been thin on the ground lately. As a non-native, though, I've always liked signs that have a particular "Americana" feel to them, and the classic railroad crossing signs are a good example of this.
