An exercise in imagination, I put blobs of masking fluid in a grid on the paper, then a quick dash of watercolour over each one. After rubbing off the masking fluid, I drew a little face into each white dot...

Some people doubt they are creative or have any “special” talents. I disagree. One of the most universal driving forces, even necessities, for an ever-evolving human civilization, is the capacity for creative thought inherent in ALL human beings. Sure, not everyone can be a Picasso or Da Vinci. There are even some who will try to argue there is “good” and “bad” art or that some people are more or less “creative” than others. But these sorts of social or cultural judgements of creative expression subjugates the true function of art into what Joyce called “improper art”. Art forms which draw you towards desire, loathing, judgement.

Within each and every one of us is the capacity for original and creative thought. The capacity to think “outside the box” or to combine, organize, write, draw, paint, build or photograph something that speaks from our own hearts. Creativity is nothing more than thinking, acting or expressing yourself in a novel, or meaningful way. Not someone else’s definition of “meaningful”, but your own.

I also like to think of creativity and art to be one of the uniquely human modes for expressing the numinous, the underlying forms of reality and myth. Creativity and (proper) art can be thought of as human tools for evoking and revealing, through visual or other expressive means, that which transcends all forms, all duality. “Proper art is art in the service of what is properly the function of art.” (Joyce) That function is to evoke or connote a state of aesthetic arrest. “You apprehend a proper piece of art and you can only stand there in sensational (aesthetic) contemplation and enjoyment. You’re in awe, raised above desire and loathing.” (Peter Quadrino – www.abuildingrome.com)

So go out and draw, paint, write, build, sing, compose and photograph as if nobody were watching or listening. Just listen to what’s inside your own heart, hear your own creative voice and draw the most crooked and handicapped stick-men the world has ever seen, or just throw some paint on a bare concrete wall.

“The role of the artist I now understood as that of revealing through the world-surfaces the implicit forms of the soul, and the great agent to assist the artist was the myth.” (Joseph Campbell)

“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” (Van Gogh)

“What you get in the vegetation traditions is this notion of identity behind the surface display of duality. Behind all these manifestations is the one radiance, which shines through all things. The function of art is to reveal this radiance through the created object. When you see the beautiful organization of a fortunately composed work of art, you just say, “Aha!” Somehow it speaks to the order in your own life and leads to the realization of the very things that religions are concerned to render.” (Joseph Campbell)

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.” (Albert Einstein)

Things have changed. Detailed planning and preparation have given way to a more 'on-the-fly' approach to business and productivity, it's core tenants are 1- learning through practice and discovery -2- solving through doing. While the process is often scary and painful, it's also deeply rewarding and incredibly effective. (above illustration: ok, so I may have exaggerated my own wingspan, but that's an illustrator's prerogative:)
