LOS ALAMITOS - A public memorial service and celebration of life was held for Los Angeles Fire Department Firefighter Kenneth Brink at Cottonwood Church in Los Alamitos, California on November 18, 2022. Brink, a beloved 15 year veteran of the Department assigned to Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks, died unexpectedly while off-duty and at home on November 9, 2022.

LOS ANGELES - It took more than 120 Los Angeles Firefighters less than an hour to fully extinguish heavy fire in a 250' x 100' L-shaped one-story school district warehouse at 1425 South San Pedro Street in the Fashion District of downtown Los Angeles on October 3, 2019, .The major emergency blaze thankfully caused no injury.

Dans le cadre du volet 1 – Intervention dans l’espace public de notre programmation artistique, Kandis Friesen propose le projet maintenance/d’entretien, dans la continuité d’une série d’interventions basées sur le dessin pendant lesquelles elle nettoie les espaces publics et les espaces liés aux arts.
Voyant l’accumulation de saleté comme le processus de dessins collectifs, son travail vient confirmer leur présence par le geste d’effacer (nettoyer) ceux-ci. Se faisant, elle exploite les problématiques du labeur, de la collectivité, de la propriété, de l’usage et de l’occupation des surfaces de l’espace public.
Pendant deux semaines, l’artiste travaillera dans les lieux environnant le quartier général de DARE-DARE afin d’exécuter ses journées de nettoyage (10h à 18h). Devenant ainsi la concierge publique du centre d’artistes, elle portera un uniforme de travail neutre pour nettoyer et récurer les trottoirs et les espaces publics en incluant le mobilier urbain s’y trouvant. Elle se situera à deux endroits différents : une parcelle de trottoir de la rue Saint-Laurent au coin De Maisonneuve et l’esplanade de la promenade des Artistes du Quartier des spectacles.
Intention
Les tâches de nettoyage dans les espaces publics sont souvent ignorées, invisibles ou encore dénigrées (ramasser les ordures, entretien des stations de métro). Le geste de nettoyage «performé» par l’artiste focalise ainsi notre regard, nos perceptions du labeur et des actions propres à l’entretien et à la création artistique. Par son travail manuel, elle met en lumière la saleté accumulée par l’achalandage des festivals et de la vie quotidienne du quartier.
Cette proposition de Friesen fait écho, vu dans un aspect élargi, à sa pratique en dessin et tisse des liens entre ses œuvres antérieurs et plus récentes. Ces résonnances se forment par la présence des concepts de la collaboration, du labeur et de la relation entre l’acte de laisser une trace et les formes d’archives collectives.
Contexte d’intervention
L’emplacement actuel de DARE-DARE aux abords du métro Saint-Laurent le positionne à la fois : au cœur du Quartier des spectacles (ce qu’était l’ancien Red Light), à proximité de zones résidentielles à prix modique et d’un secteur commercial.
Certaines manières plus marginales d’occuper l’espace public telles que le travail lié au sexe, la sollicitation de dons par les sans-abri ou encore les allers et venues de rôdeurs, sont souvent criminalisées et associées à une forme de saleté ou à « être sale ». Par exemple, lorsqu’un quartier s’embourgeoise ou, qu’un nouveau développement urbain est mis en place, on entend souvent des expressions comme faire un «nettoyage du quartier».
Ainsi, cette œuvre bouleverse et questionne les idées et les conventions entourant l’occupation de l’espace public, ce que nous pensons de l’art en général et la notion de propreté. Les journées de travail de l’artiste lui permettront d’interagir avec les passants, (approximativement 15 000 personnes transitent près du quartier général de DARE-DARE tous les jours). Ces interactions devraient mener à des conversations portant sur le rôle et la définition de l’art, les manières dont nous occupons et prenons soin des espaces publics, de nous-mêmes et des autres.
Dans un contexte où le développement du Quartier des spectacles est omniprésent et où les festivals d’envergure sont à l’honneur, le travail de l’artiste contraste avec un portrait dit séduisant du domaine des arts.
Le projet maintenance/d'entretien vise à aborder une forme de critique face à tous ces aspects de la vie dans les différents espaces publics. Se faisant, ce projet reflète les intérêts de DARE-DARE pour l’exploration des contextes urbains, l’échange et les collaborations possibles dans les pratiques d’art public.
Biographie
Kandis Friesen est née et a grandi à Winnipeg (Manitoba), elle vit et travaille à Montréal depuis 2000. Travaillant avec le son, la vidéo, le dessin et l'installation, sa pratique interdisciplinaire s’intéresse au langage et à la traduction; aux sites d’identité nationale et culturelle; et aux fonctionnements de la mémoire et de l'archive collective. Son travail a été présenté à travers le Canada et à l'étranger, notamment à : La Centrale, articule et Skol. Ses vidéos ont été diffusées dans divers événements : Athens Video */Arts Festival (Grèce), THEOFFCENTER (San Francisco), WNDX (Winnipeg), et OK.QUOI?! (Sackville); elles sont distribuées par le Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV).
