The Gosper County Courthouse, at 507 Smith Ave. in Elwood, Nebraska, was built in 1939. It was designed by architects McClure & Walker with Art Deco style.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It was deemed historically significant for its architecture and for its association with politics and local government; it was one of seven Nebraska courthouses built by New Deal programs.
The courthouse was built in 1901 in the Late Victorian Style. It was constructed of brick from a local kiln, stone from Valentine Ridge near the Snake River and roofed with shakes from the nearby Blue Mountains. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and underwent extensive restoration in 2011.
I first heard about Sedona over a quarter of a century ago when my great aunt and uncle celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there, but my family was unable to attend the festivities because my lovely wife was just days away from giving birth to our youngest child.
Flash forward 27 years later, and we decided to finally see the town in person -- via a quick, last minute out-of-the-way stop on our drive back home to Los Angeles after a week of visiting family in Albuquerque. In fact, this weekend we also found out after being together over 30 years, that my wife has distant family ties (through marriage) to the town.
It seems Sedona was named for the great-grandmother of one of my wife's aunts, one Sedona Schnebly who hailed originally from the Show Me State of Missouri and was also the burg's first postmistress..
There's even a statue of her in front of the town's library -- but we never saw that.

Thanks to a controlled burn along 1-17 just south of Flagstaff, and the southbound road being shut down to one lane, we almost didn't get there for a sunset at all. But thanks to a fortuitous tip from a friendly and knowledgeable gas station attendant, and a photocopy of the Google map she must give out to idiots like me all day, we took the longer but faster route -- 1-17 south to highway 179, which brought us in the back way through the Village of Oak Creek.
Luckily one of the first scenic view turnoffs we found happened to have amazing views of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. The sunset was amazing and seemed to go on forever --- I love the last bit of light reflecting off the butte here. And I thought it was over, only to put away the tripod and have the sky blow up even more, as evidenced in the image below.
The only downside was the millions of mosquitoes and the horrible stench coming from the public restrooms, but that was a small price to pay for the light show put on by Mother Nature.
I hope one day to return and stay longer -- just not in the summer. It's hot -- not Phoenix hot, but hot enough. And then there's those pesky mosquitoes.

McLennan County Courthouse, Waco Texas, located on the Edwards Plateau in Central Texas, was created by the Texas Legislature in 1850 out of Milam County. The county seat, Waco, had been founded originally as an outpost of the Texas Rangers, laid out by George B. Erath, and was known by 1850 as "Waco Village." According to local lore, the first sustained flight did not occur in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, but just outside Tokio (a small community in McLennan County) by a man flying a gyrocopter. During World War I, McLennan County was home to at least one military airfield, Rich Field. In 1886, Baylor University relocated from Independence, Texas, to Waco absorbing Waco University. During the early 20th century, McLennan County was home to as many as five colleges; in addition to Baylor, the other colleges included the predecessor to what is now known as Texas Christian University (now in Fort Worth), Paul Quinn College (relocated since to Dallas), and two other short-lived colleges. In the 1960s, the Texas Legislature created the first community college to use those words in the name, McLennan Community College. Around the same time, what is now the flagship institution of Texas State Technical College was founded as James Connally Technical Institute, as a member of the Texas A&M University System. Today, Baylor, McLennan Community College, and Texas State Technical College remain in McLennan County and absorb a large portion of the college-bound high school graduates from the County and the surrounding areas.
The courthouse was built in 1877 and reportedly had an ornate walnut staircase which is way long gone. Check mathteacher's photostream for a view of the inside as it is now. Frio was considered a "cowboy capital" and outpost cultural center during the 1870's. After the town picked up all the buildings but the courthouse and the jail and moved to Pearsall where the railroad was, this courthouse was purchased by W. Yancey Kilgore and it subsequently housed a general store, the post office and in 1884 Frio Acadmey. What a shame indeed to see this fall into decay. 4 photos in this series

The DeKalb County Courthouse is located in the county seat of DeKalb County, Illinois, U.S.A., the city of Sycamore. The Classical Revival structure sits on a square facing Illinois Route 64 as it passes through the city. The current courthouse was constructed in 1905 amid controversy over where the courthouse and thus, ultimately, the county seat would be located. The current building is the third structure to bear the name "DeKalb County Courthouse." DeKalb County's Courthouse still serves as the county's primary judicial center and is a contributing property to the Sycamore Historic District. The district joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The architect was Herbert T. Hazelton (Watson & Hazelton).

I parked on the rooftop (level 6) of the bus depot carpark last week, and gosh it made a lot of difference to shooting this dome instead of standing at street level. Of course the 21x zoom really helped. It was a miserable wet day, with heavy thunderclouds with heavy rain forecast.
I decided not to park in the parklands (for free) and forked out $11.50 for the day instead to avoid getting wet. The weather however did not behave as predicted and did not rain at all that day, although it always looked as thought it was about to. Same again today, and I parked in the free spot and biked into the office without getting wet. I don't care about the home trip as I can have a hot shower as soon as I get there.

There's a fabulous view of the old DeKalb County Courthouse from the upper floors of the new courthouse.
As to why I was in the new courthouse, I had jury duty. My group of 14 was dismissed for several hours while the lawyers interviewed (voir dire) the other groups. We were told to return at a specified time, but they ran behind schedule. So I had the pleasure of waiting in a windowed hallway outside the courtroom for as long as it took to do this sketch. Though I didn't have my sketchbook with me at this point, I had colored pencils and a piece of scrap paper. I'm probably the only juror who enjoyed the wait.

The Jackson County Courthouse, located in Jackson, Ohio, was built in 1953 after a fire destroyed an earlier courthouse dating to 1868. The memorial in the lower left hand corner of the shot honors Jackson County native James A. Rhodes, who served as governor of Ohio from 1963-1971 and 1975-1983.

The red rocks of the American Southwest seem to almost glow during the early morning and late afternoon when the sun's rays are striking them almost perpendicularly. They, however, seem to lose that glow as the sun rises in the sky.

Parking County Jail prisoners broke out of the holding area below the courthouse after the jailer passed out. They called for help and tried to provide assistance. When deputies arrived, before they understood what was happening, they came in guns drawn.
Russell County Courthouse in Phenix City Alabama was built in 1838 in the Classical Revival style. The building faces north and is a three story red colored brick, stone and concrete structure. The building is located on landscaped grounds on the north side of the center of Phenix City. The north front has a porch with four large columns rising to a pediment at the roof line. The center section rises above the east and west wings which have flat roofs.

Manassas Courthouse
The Old Manassas Courthouse is located at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Lee Avenue in Old Town Manassas is the 5th County Courthouse and County seat in Prince William County. The County seat was moved to Manassas in 1894 and this building was used as the County courthouse until 1982. The Old Manassas Courthouse was the site of the 1911 Peace Jubilee where President Taft stood on the grounds of the courthouse to kick off the week-long festivities. The 1911 Peace Jubilee marked the 50th anniversary of the First Battle of Manassas.
At the Old Manassas Courthouse stands a monument dedicated to the 1911 Jubilee of Peace. Flanking the plaque and two anchors are a pair of gun tubes, cannons, dating to the Civil War.
In 2001, restoration and rehabilitation were completed and the Courthouse was reopened to the public. Upstairs visitors will find the original courtroom has been rehabilitated to an elegant ballroom, which the public can rent for meetings receptions and other special events.
