Across from the Country Club and its golf course "The Dominion," a bona fide gated community, is being built. I asked Grandma, "Why does Searcy need a gated community?"
She replied: "There's two!" Then she told me where the other is, and added, "Gangs moved here from New Orleans after Katrina."
I don't think she put much stock in the gang argument, but she thought it plausible. But still: Searcy is where thousands live like millions wish they could. Who is it keeping out with the gates?
As for what "The Dominion" promises, I'll just note: (1) The spec homes there are the same sort of mausoleum-chic as every other petit-bourgeois house erected in Searcy the past 15 years. (2) There are no sidewalks. (3) Is this what Old World Europe is nostalgic for?
