Sometimes looking for new places

in SL leads to a whole series of pictures.

This time I have explored

"Florence at Low Tide"

together with Mary D.

While we were sitting together,

drinking a glas of wine

(or two .. and she ate all the cheese!)

we both made some pictures

of this beautiful place.

I also wanted to thank Maddy Gynoid,

who presented this sim in his amazing blog.

thank youuuuuuuu ♡♡

Asian rhinos, in contrast to their African counterparts, possess a distinctive and heavily armored appearance, owing to the numerous folds in their skin. These magnificent creatures are herbivores, primarily feeding on a diet consisting of tall grasses, shrubs, leaves, and fruits. As they graze, they play a significant role in shaping and restructuring the landscapes they inhabit. However, the unfortunate truth is that some Asian rhinoceros species are on the brink of extinction.

Vietnam's last Javan rhinos, a critically endangered subspecies, tragically became extinct in 2010. One of the most pressing threats to these remarkable animals is poaching. Rhinoceroses are mercilessly hunted by poachers for their horns, which fetch exorbitant prices on the black market. East Asia, particularly Vietnam, stands out as the largest market for rhino horns.

Rhino horns, despite being composed of keratin, the same protein found in hair and fingernails, are coveted for their supposed therapeutic properties. Some cultures grind these horns into dust and consume it as traditional medicine or use it for ornamental purposes. Astonishingly, the price of rhino horns, when measured by weight, can rival that of gold on the black market.

Among Asian rhino species, both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros possess two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn. Regrettably, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categorizes the black rhinoceros, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros as critically endangered, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures from extinction.

Dust whirled in the air, attracted by the sunlight as the dawn closed in. Peaceful silence filled the room, accompanied by the song of pencils scratching over paper. There was no pressure to talk, nor to stay quiet. Just wholesome harmony of connected counterparts, so different, yet so alike. Both amazing in their own way, not to be compared or to compete but in true friendship.

Gently she leans over and smiles. "I admire how you draw hair."

He dips his head. "Thank you." A smile brightens his face as he takes a look at her work in return.

"I admire how you draw skin. This skill is one of a kind.", he replies. "Probably you won't believe me, but I learned a lot from you and you keep motivating me."

Her lips pull into an cheeky smirk. "That's true, I don't believe you."

"Hah, you better.", he says, half-joking. "Just imagine what we could do if we worked together."

"Everything.", she replies.

After several failed picture-ideas and attempts, I'm happy we finally managed to take this picture together! You've got such a kind heart, smart brain and although sometimes you don't believe in yourself, I do. Without a doubt. I'll always be at your side when you need me. I'm more than grateful to have met you, my counterpart.

The Cape Buffalo is the largest sub-species of the African Buffalo. The adult African buffalo's horns are its characteristic feature: they have fused bases, forming a continuous bone shield across the top of the head referred to as a "boss". It is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous animals on the African continent, and according to some estimates it gores, tramples, and kills over 200 people every year.

The African Buffalo is not an ancestor of domestic cattle and is only distantly related to other larger bovines. Its unpredictable temperament may have been part of the reason that the African buffalo has never been domesticated, unlike its Asian counterpart, the water buffalo. Natural predators of adult African buffaloes include lions, hyenas, large crocodiles and humans. (Wikipedia)

The Yellow-billed Oxpecker sitting on the buffalo's head is a bulbul-sized olive-brown bird that sports a diagnostic red-tipped yellow bill, a red eye without an eye-wattle, and a pale buff rump. Small groups occur in savanna and farmland, where they require large wild ungulates and domestic stock to forage on; they clamber agilely over host mammals, gleaning ticks, mites and other ectoparasites, and occasionally drinking host blood. As they fly between large mammals, they give a distinctive sizzling-crackle call. (eBird)

2020 Lamborghini Adventador SVJ Coupe

With wild-looking bodywork and dramatic performance, the 2020 Lamborghini Aventador is spectacular in every sense of the word. It's also the last of a dying breed, with hybrid technology expected to enhance future iterations of the V-12 supercar. Still, this wedge-shaped, scissor-doored Lambo blasts into the sunset with neck-snapping acceleration and a maniacal exhaust note.

The 2020 Aventador powertrain hierarchy begins with a mid-mounted naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12 that develops 730 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque that is transmitted to the wheels via a seven-speed automated-manual transmission. This basic setup is shared among the three distinct variants, but the track-focused SVJ (which stands for Superveloce Jota) has various enhancements that unlock extra horsepower and torque that meet the pavement through all four wheels. We drove this brutally powerful monster—along with its roofless counterpart—and experienced their tremendous acceleration and kidney-crushing cornering forces firsthand. The hefty machines heaved through the corners, but their incredible grip and rear-steering system helped it change direction.

The Indian pangolin, thick-tailed pangolin, or scaly anteater (Manis crassicaudata) is a pangolin found on the Indian subcontinent. It is not common anywhere in its range. Like other pangolins, it has large, overlapping scales on its body which act as armour. It can also curl itself into a ball as self-defence against predators such as the tiger. The colour of its scales varies depending on the colour of the earth in its surroundings.

It is an insectivore, feeding on ants and termites, digging them out of mounds and logs using its long claws, which are as long as its fore limbs. It is nocturnal and rests in deep burrows during the day.

The Indian pangolin is threatened by hunting for its meat and for various body parts used in traditional medicine.

The Indian pangolin is a solitary, shy, slow-moving, nocturnal mammal. It is about 84–122 centimetres (33–48 in) long from head to tail, the tail usually being 33–47 cm long, and weighs 10–16 kg. Females are generally smaller than the males and have one pair of mammae. The pangolin possesses a cone-shaped head with small, dark eyes, and a long muzzle with a nose pad similar in color, or darker than, its pinkish-brown skin. It has powerful limbs, tipped with sharp, clawed digits. It is an almost exclusive insectivore and principally subsists on ants and termites, which it catches with a specially adapted long, sticky tongue. The pangolin has no teeth, but has strong stomach muscles to aid in digestion. The most noticeable characteristic of the pangolin is its massive, scaled armour, which covers its upper face and its whole body with the exception of the belly and the inside of the legs. These protective scales are rigid and made of keratin. It has 160–200 scales in total, about 40–46% of which are located on the tail. Scales can be 6.5–7 cm long, 8.5 cm wide, and weigh 7–10 grams. The skin and scales make up about one-fourth to one-third of the total body mass of this species.

The Indian pangolin has been recorded from various forest types, including Sri Lankan rainforest and plains to middle hill levels. The animal can be found in grasslands and secondary forests, and is well adapted to desert regions as it is believed to have a tolerance to dry areas, but prefers more barren, hilly regions. This pangolin species may also sometimes reach high elevations, and has been sighted in Sri Lanka at 1100 meters and in the Nilgiri mountains in India at 2300 meters. It prefers soft and semi-sandy soil conditions suitable for digging burrows.

Pangolin burrows fall into one of two categories: feeding and living burrows. Feeding burrows are smaller than living burrows (though their sizes vary depending on the abundance of prey) and are created more frequently during the spring, when there is a greater availability of prey. Living burrows are wider, deeper, and more circular, and are occupied for a longer time than feeding burrows, as they are mainly used to sleep and rest during the day. After a few months, the pangolin abandons the burrow and digs a new one close to a food source. However, it is not uncommon for the pangolin to shift back to an old burrow.

Unlike its African counterpart, the Indian pangolin does not climb trees, but it does value the presence of trees, herbs, and shrubs in its habitat because it is easier to dig burrows around them. Features that promote an abundance of ants and termites (grasses, bare grounds, bases of trees, shrubs, roots, leaf litter, fallen logs and elephant feces) are often present in pangolin habitats.

Few details are known about the breeding behaviour of the Indian pangolin. During the animal's mating period, females and males may share the same burrow and show some diurnal activities. Males have testes in a fold of the skin located in their groin areas. The female's embryo develops in one of the uterine horns. The gestation period lasts 65–70 days; the placenta is diffuse and not deciduate. Usually, a single young is born, but twins have been reported in this species. The young weigh 235–400 g at birth and measure roughly 30 cm. The newborn animals have open eyes, and soft scales with protruding hairs between them. The mother pangolin carries her young on her tail. When the mother and young are disturbed, the young pangolin is held against its mother's belly and protected by the mother's tail.

Sehnsucht (German pronunciation: [ˈzeːnˌzʊxt]) is a German noun translated as "longing", "desire", "yearning", or "craving". It is often romanticized and subject of many poems and songs

I still get surprised how many words I use in my daily life that don't have a counterpart in english

With a pair of painted C40s bracketing a patched C40-8W, POAY is doing every bit of trackspeed as they cruise by the old B&M station at Wells, headlights dimmed for the meet with counterpart AYPO. Sadly Pan Am hasn't repainted any of the widecab C40s, and with CSX looking to purchase the railroad, it doesn't seem likely that any will be painted.

Eastern White Pelican

St James Park

London, England

A Bit of History

At the height of the Cold War, when the Russian ambassador to the UK extended the hand of friendship by offering some Russian pelicans for the park, the US ambassador got wind and decided they had to match the offer. A move that only exacerbated tensions.

As the story goes, the pelicans that the Americans sent didn’t get on with the Russians.

True to the age, there was a lot of posturing about whether either side were trying to sabotage the other. Until it turned out that the US pelicans were of a saltwater species and just didn’t like the fresh waters of St James’s Park.

Mistake realised and pelicans recalled, the Americans sent a fresh batch that ended up getting along just fine with their Russian counterparts. True again to the age, the story remains shrouded in the clandestine, with neither side confirming its truth.

The 3,800 acre Clumber Park contains extensive wild life. The Grey Squirrels are especially 'human' friendly as, like their other counterparts, receive a regular supply of food. This image taken on 20.02.2020 sees this 'Cheeky Chappy' enjoy a quick snack having just broken open a 'Monkey Nut'!

The aggressive counterpart of the Grey Winged Blackbird. This unlike her male hubby was quite interesting! The males most of the time darted off when she was around. Only a few times, the female foraged without bothering about the males. I am not sure if this is the normal behaviour and found that interesting only after I was reviewing my pictures.

We sighted these birds in several places, mostly in small numbers of 1-3, in the lower branches or slopes foraging in the leaves / soil below.

Many thanks in advance for the views, faves and feedback.

Snowy Egret

The Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) is a small white heron. It is the American counterpart to the very similar Old World little egret, which has established a foothold in the Bahamas. At one time, the beautiful plumes of the snowy egret were in great demand by market hunters as decorations for women's hats. This reduced the population of the species to dangerously low levels. Now protected in the United States by law, under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, this bird's population has rebounded.

For more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowy_egret

Her male counterpart tends to get all the plaudits., all to do with that impressive 'Pirate-like' beard that gives the species its name

But I happen to think the female is a bit of a stunner herself

They belong to a family called Panuridae., and so far no other bird has been identified as belonging to that family which makes the Bearded Tit a unique bird

So you really could say she is Impressively Unique!

*"On the resplendent afternoon of the 15th day of December, in the year of our Lord 2018, at the precise hour of 3:52 and 14 seconds past, the moon ascended with regal poise over the tranquil expanse of Puerto Escondido, Duvergé. In its First Quarter phase, the lunar orb revealed a harmonious balance—half illuminated by the sun's golden rays, half veiled in shadow’s tender embrace. At the tender age of 7.59 days, the moon graced the heavens with an angular diameter of 0.5 degrees, suspended at a distance of 399,649 kilometers from the Earth. The sun, its eternal counterpart, lingered at a distance of 147,228,062 kilometers, casting its celestial influence upon the azure firmament.

Astronomical ephemeris whispered of the moon's passage through the sign of Pisces, imbuing the scene with an air of mysticism and poetic reverie. The tableau, a divine interplay of light and shadow, evoked a sense of cosmic grandeur, as though the heavens themselves had conspired to bestow this moment of sublime splendor upon the beholder."

Sparrowhawk - Accipiter Nisus

Though it is a predator which specialises in catching woodland birds, the Eurasian sparrowhawk can be found in any habitat and often hunts garden birds in towns and cities. Males tend to take smaller birds, including tits, finches, and sparrows; females catch primarily thrushes and starlings, but are capable of killing birds weighing 500 g (18 oz) or more.

The Eurasian sparrowhawk is found throughout the temperate and subtropical parts of the Old World; while birds from the northern parts of the range migrate south for winter, their southern counterparts remain resident or make dispersive movements. Eurasian sparrowhawks breed in suitable woodland of any type, with the nest, measuring up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) across, built using twigs in a tree. Four or five pale blue, brown-spotted eggs are laid; the success of the breeding attempt is dependent on the female maintaining a high weight while the male brings her food. The chicks hatch after 33 days and fledge after 24 to 28 days.

The probability of a juvenile surviving its first year is 34%, with 69% of adults surviving from one year to the next. Mortality in young males is greater than that of young females and the typical lifespan is four years. This species is now one of the most common birds of prey in Europe, although the population crashed after the Second World War. Organochlorine insecticides used to treat seeds before sowing built up in the bird population, and the concentrations in Eurasian sparrowhawks were enough to kill some outright and incapacitate others; affected birds laid eggs with fragile shells which broke during incubation. However, its population recovered after the chemicals were banned, and it is now relatively common, classified as being of Least Concern by BirdLife International.

The Eurasian sparrowhawk's hunting behaviour has brought it into conflict with humans for hundreds of years, particularly racing pigeon owners and people rearing poultry and gamebirds. It has also been blamed for decreases in passerine populations. The increase in population of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk coincides with the decline in House Sparrows in Britain. Studies of racing pigeon deaths found that Eurasian sparrowhawks were responsible for less than 1%. Falconers have utilised the Eurasian sparrowhawk since at least the 16th century; although the species has a reputation for being difficult to train, it is also praised for its courage. The species features in Teutonic mythology and is mentioned in works by writers including William Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Ted Hughes.

Male Eurasian sparrowhawks regularly kill birds weighing up to 40 g (1.4 oz) and sometimes up to 120 g (4.2 oz); females can tackle prey up to 500 g (18 oz) or more. The weight of food consumed by adult birds daily is estimated to be 40–50 g (1.4–1.8 oz) for males and 50–70 g (1.8–2.5 oz) for females. During one year, a pair of Eurasian sparrowhawks could take 2,200 house sparrows, 600 common blackbirds or 110 wood pigeons. Species that feed in the open, far from cover, or are conspicuous by their behaviour or coloration, are taken more often by Eurasian sparrowhawks. For example, great tits and house sparrows are vulnerable to attack. Eurasian sparrowhawks may account for more than 50% of deaths in certain species, but the extent varies from area to area.

Males tend to take tits, finches, sparrows and buntings; females often take thrushes and starlings. Larger quarry (such as doves and magpies) may not die immediately but succumb during feather plucking and eating. More than 120 bird species have been recorded as prey and individual Eurasian sparrowhawks may specialise in certain prey. The birds taken are usually adults or fledglings, though chicks in the nest and carrion are sometimes eaten. Small mammals, including bats, are sometimes caught but insects are eaten only very rarely.

I've got a good collection of automotive images with most stored quietly on hard drives and I decided it would be nice to try and get some into print in the most cost effective way I could.

A trend lately is to create a 'zine' or effectively a soft cover magazine which I decided to do. Not as difficult as I first imagined, the hardest part being selecting and placing images that worked together on the pages.

The cost of the zine was very reasonable but then add in the international postage to NZ and it's now a zine to be handled with care!

As it was my first attempt I ordered a single copy as a proof basically, but ordering a few at a time would even the cost out somewhat.

This is the outcome - a 36 page high quality zine featuring 50 black and white and colour images from both film and digital cameras. I thought the film BW images actually printed and looked nicer than some of their digital counterparts.

A nice way to print and showcase a collection or special event etc.!
