Countdown to Halloween

Radio Static.

Captain Estubing lies unconscious from falling at the wheel when the boat took a sudden turn.

Waters splash against Shrimp Boat now aground just a few hundred feet from the lighthouse. A board creaks on the stern of the boat as a ghostly figure with sword raised approaches the cargo hold. He sees one of the two pieces of cargo that he was told to get. But he sees some men carrying flashlights coming towards him. He calculates his time, decides one crate is better than none, and dashes overboard with the cargo. He will have to make a return to get the other one later.

“The boat’s over here!”

“I see it. Quick, radio for more help!”

Countdown to Halloween

The officers escorted the two ghosts inside the warehouse. “This is Sam Shoegum, detective.” the police commander said with a firm voice. “May I speak with your commander?”

Silence.

“This is Sam Shoegum, detective and friend. May I please speak with your commander?”

“Now that you said ‘please’ we can talk.” The voice came from the darkness.

“Forgive our lack of manners,” Sam admitted shame-facedly, “but time is of the essence. I understand you have a container we need, and we have a container you need.”

“Yes, you do!”

“And you need it for your Halloween party just as we need the other for our Halloween party.”

“Right.”

“So, here’s our idea...”

for a year now I have been preparing my final papers for a specialist exam in the teaching of citizenship. Twenty three points have to be covered and cross referenced using school policies/examples of work/lesson plans/evaluations/essays/observations/outcomes and other documentation.

It all goes in next week.

It's like having baby..you nurture it, watch it grow, get tired, make the wrong decisions, make the right decisions, and you wonder what your life will be like when it leaves your side for the world (or Roehampton University in this case!) to make it's mark.

Last hurdles are always hard but having the finishing line in sight also sets you free.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone...xx

I'm counting down the days...can't wait to get back to Florida and see these guys.

This painting seems like a long-winded way of revealing that I like foot bondage! I guess I'm too shy to just say "Hey girl, can I tie up your feet?"!

Nah, I'm not shy about it!!!

“Are you okay, Ursula?” Sam Shoegum asked.

“Of course,” Ursula replied calmly. “These ghosts were tame. I think they were more fearful of the big helicopter blowing all that wind around than they were of me!”

“I have the container,” one of the officers reported. “What should I do with it?”

Sam came over to look at it and said, “We’re going to switch it with the other decoy container, and then wait for the other ghosts to come. Once they do, we’ll be able to follow them and find the original container that has the parts we need for our Halloween party.”

“About that party,” Ursula began slowly. “I have an idea that might work out for everybody.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, the ghosts claim they need the other container to have their party, just as we need the container they have for our party. I was wondering if...”

“We could have the party together?” Sam’s eyes lit up.

Cliff checks in with the baggage clerk who instructs him to set the shipping containers on the platform. The locomotive arrives at the station, but no one is really paying any attention. Trains come and go; they arrive and depart. No one really pays attention to the locomotive as they all appear the same. Except this one.

“You’re all set, Cliff,” the baggage clerk announces. “Your shipment will arrive in Newberry in two days.”

“Good to know, sir.” Cliff receives the shipping order stamped with the code to make sure that once it is picked up at its destination, the right person signs for it.

“All in a day’s work,” the clerk replied, tipping his hat.

Meanwhile, the ticket agent joins them on the platform. “Carl, just a minute on that shipment.”

Cliff was taken back by this announcement. “Is there anything wrong?” he inquired, hoping that there was nothing.

“Oh, no, sir,” she replied. “We have to make sure the contents are secure. Did you notice anything rattling inside?”

“No, Malinda. Everything was padded securely. Nothing will come loose in shipment. Right, Cliff?” The baggage clerk seemed to become a little edgy, but that was normal as once a train makes a stop, he wants to get it back on its schedule. There’s nothing like having a shipment delay in his mind.

“Thanks,” Cliff waved as he felt a sense of relief. “That train should make good time, right? I mean, the weather is great this time of year, and barring a forest fire, hurricane, or flood, it should make it to Newberry in good time.”

“Unless the unthinkable should happen,” Malinda replied. “I know of things that happen on this line, and we can’t quite explain what goes on.”

“What things?” Cliff asked.

After Robby stealthily left Jeffry and Marsha, the two of them walk slowly, side by side, to the concert. “It’s been since my college days that I had attended a concert, and the only one I did was so loud, I vowed never to attend another one again.”

“We’ll, it looks like you’re breaking your vow tonight!” Marsha criticized, but knew this was going to be much softer in volume than a college concert. “You have to realize this is for high school students, and they don’t have the maturity like a college student to listen to a concert.”

Jeffry thought a moment then agreed. “I guess you’re right on that. As I remember it, we thought we had the best music in high school times, but when I got to college, the music seemed to be better when it was louder.”

“I thought it was the other way around,” Marsha countered. “I thought bands would try to make high school kids go deaf, then the college bands would sing songs that would bring back their hearing.” She smiled, knowing this was not really what happens.

“Ha! You almost had me there,” Jeffry laughed. “I know you’re partially deaf in your one ear, and can’t hear out of the other, right?”

Marsha didn’t say anything for a while. They kept walking down the sidewalk to where the concert was assembling.

“I said, I thought you were deaf in one ear…

“Oh, stop it!” Marsha shot back. I heard you the first time. I was just playing you!” She seemed sincere, but deep down insider her, Marsha felt a feeling she never had before. Being with Jeffry for the first time in all these years brought back some pleasant memories.

“Say,” Jeffry said to break up the tension. “Let’s grab an ice cream cone or something before the concert. Do you have a favorite flavor?”

“Why, sure!” Marsha’s eyes lit up. “I love chocolate.”

Just then the wind picked up and shifted direction. Leaves that were on the ground or barely hanging in the tree started to swirl around the two as they continued walking. But the leaves weren’t the only things flying in the air.

It is so happy to shoot fireworks with my friends on the last day of 2018. Wish you guys have a good time in HK. 😄

Countdown to Halloween

The decoy cargo container was sealed with the replacements along with the tracking device. Sam Shoegum carefully supervised this operation, including loading it onto the Shrimp Boat and finding the best spot to cast it overboard. Once there, Ursula Diver would carefully set it in place underwater, then return to the boat.

All that needed to be done now was for the ghosts to come and get this container.

Countdown to Halloween

“Ahoy, mates!”

“Who are you?”

“Let’s just say that I am one who knows what may be inside that container. It might be in your best interest to let me examine that before you take it.”

“Why?”

“There might be something planted inside that could be dangerous to you.”

“What is it?”

“I’d rather not say. Once you get it on board, I ask permission to board your ship and take a look inside. When I find it, I’ll take care of it, but you can have the treasure.”

“Permission granted.”

Countdown to Halloween

“Now, tell me something. What is in this shipping container that makes it so special? How big is it? When did you last see it?”

“It was on a Shrimp Boat that ran aground near the Grimsmouth Cove Lighthouse. It was about so big by so big by so tall,” motioning with his arms but in a drunken state of mind. “And it had musical instruments in it.”

“Musical instruments? If they can’t find this container, why not just buy replacements?”

“The musicians say these are special and they need them for the big party coming on Halloween. That’s why I have to get that container.”

“I know someone who knows someone who knows about a thing or two about musical instruments, so what we can do is make up a container like what you’re describing, then load it up, then deliver it. In the meantime, buddy, you better make plans to skip this town and hide for a long, long time.”

“I’ve been doing that ever since the day I died when I drowned at the levee. The music also died that day. Since then, music and musical instruments haven’t been my thing.”

Countdown to Halloween

“YOU!”

“Me?”

“Yes, you! Where are my drumsticks?”

“And my bow for my violin?”

“And my magic pick for my guitar?”

“I... I... I’m looking for them right now.”

“Really?”

“Yes. I’m going to find that cargo container if it’s the last thing I do.”

“You better!”

“Or it will be the last thing you do. This party is the most important party of the year!”

Countdown to Halloween

After daylight came and after a short rest, the gang gathered at the entrance to the lighthouse where they were greeted by two specialists. The Admiral introduced them to Captain Estubing. “When I learned of your predicament, I called two people I trust to help you. Here is Detective Sam Shoegum, the best private investigator in these parts. And here is Scuba Specialist Ursula Diver, who finished first in her class while she served in the Navy.”

Captain Estubing responded with a sigh of relief, but realized that time was of the essence. “What can you do to help me find that missing container?”

Sam Shoegum responded, “Judging from what the Admiral told us about your encounter last night, we have deduced that pirate ghosts have struck again here in Grimsmouth Cove. We’ve dealt with them before and we have a plan that may work.”

“Yes,” Ursula chimed in. “With your permission and cooperation, we need to know what was in that other container. We’ll also need to carefully inventory what is in this container.”

“Once we’ve accomplished that, then we can develop our plan to recover that missing container.” Sam said with an air of confidence.

“I hope you guys are right. Afterall, Halloween is coming, and I need to get these things to town in time for the party.” Captain Estubing said, but he felt inside that things would get tense.

Countdown to Halloween

The substitute container with the tracking device is taken down and planted where the other one was found. Now, it was a waiting game to see if anyone would come back to check on this container. But that wouldn’t matter to these guys. They had what they wanted. It was time to return to port and combine the contents of the containers and get the party ready for the ghosts.

Countdown to Halloween

With all the excitement going on, the Admiral thought it best to ascend to the observation deck of the light house to see what he could see. What he saw was more than just the sea, for he saw something that made his jaw drop. He recognized the one boat, but the other was a totally different kind of watercraft. He adjusted the focus on his telescope, squinted more earnestly, and studied every detail he could observe. He was shocked by whom he saw in the one boat!

“I’ve got to contact Sam Shoegum right away!” he said as he descended the stairs to the radio room. “Otherwise, his tracking device might not work!”

Many parents are finishing Halloween costumes, carving jack-o-lanterns and stocking up on candy. Since Halloween falls on a Monday this year, some families have been celebrating all weekend:)

Have a safe holiday this year:)

Countdown to Halloween

“I think you just needed a date for this year’s Halloween party, right, Sam?” Ursula winked,

“I think you deducted correctly,” Sam said with a touch of laughter. “With all the activity of searching for that container, I didn’t have any time to think about my costume. But you thought of it for me. Thank you!”

The music swells up while people and ghosts are dancing.

In the crowd, people were talking. “That was a great idea that Sam and Ursula had, joining forces to put on this great party. The musicians got their drumsticks and bow, and the guitarist got his magic pick. The people here are enjoying the music.”

“And after the dancing, we get to go Trick-or-Treating!”

“I’ve got the treat if you’ve got the trick!”

Countdown to Halloween

“You called, Wanda?”

“Yes, I did, Sam. I have good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear first?”

“Oh, we’re playing that game again, huh?”

“You know I always do.”

“And you know what I’ll want to hear first, right?”

“Okay. The good news is they have taken the bait. Our informant has spotted them nearing the drop site and the Admiral confirmed it with a visual spotting of their boat.”

“And the bad news?”

“It’s going to cost you a pizza.”

“Is that all?”

“And a large bottle of soda!”

Again, Ian Fleming said nothing.

...the end of a beautiful day. Sigh....
