After the trailing SD70ACe could no longer pump air, and the trailing GE was already bad ordered, the thinking heads in Adams made the decision to attach an SD40N to the front of the daily MALPR. Fortunately, a 0200 departure from Adams ensured that the train would be in daylight down in my neck of the woods. While I didn’t wake up until it was already out of Butler, I was able to make it to the searchlight signal at Bain, WI, on the north side of Kenosha.
Growing up along the Kenosha Sub, I was no stranger to seeing ATS pilots leading the foreign coal trains; but they had unfortunately disappeared when PTC was activated, and that was before I knew what I was doing as a photographer. While this is the Milwaukee Sub (a line that never had ATS), and a manifest, rather than an Oak Creek coal (or a Harvard grain, which I also never got), it was still nice to catch this as a throwback to my childhood.
I only wish I could go back and shoot more of the coal trains.
Could not resist posting just one more of these little blue beauties. I pray they will find our backyard.
Thanks for all the encouraging comments and likes. Always appreciated !! Have a blessed day !!
On the afternoon of Thursday, March 20th, 2025, Trona Railway’s afternoon Searles turn makes its way past the Trona Pinnacles with a trio of former Southern Pacific locomotives running lite. With no loads to bring west, the crew quickly brought the engines to Searles Interchange and spent over an hour there building air pulling a large cut of cars out of storage to bring back to Argus. After months of TRC2006 being out of service awaiting new traction motors and air conditioning, it was certainly nice to see it on the main again. Unfortunately, TRC2006 has since been scrapped and TRC2002 has been placed out of service.
I could still see my destination on the snow covered path. It doesn't matter which direction I will take as each step is a fresh imprint on the white snow.
Let's all take fresh steps and reach our destinations for the new year.
“I wish I could do whatever I liked behind the curtain of “madness”.
Then: I’d arrange flowers, all day long,
I’d paint; pain, love and tenderness,
I would laugh as much as I feel like at the stupidity of others,
and they would all say: “Poor thing, she’s crazy!”
(Above all I would laugh at my own stupidity.)
I would build my world which while I lived,
would be in agreement with all the worlds.
The day, or the hour,
or the minute that I lived would be mine and everyone else’s -
my madness would not be an escape from “reality”.”

Mark Twain described the Heidelberg Castle in his 1880 travel book A Tramp Abroad…
“A ruin must be rightly situated, to be effective. This one could not have been better placed. It stands upon a commanding elevation, it is buried in green woods, there is no level ground about it, but, on the contrary, there are wooded terraces upon terraces, and one looks down through shining leaves into profound chasms and abysses where twilight reigns and the sun cannot intrude. Nature knows how to garnish a ruin to get the best effect."
Heidelberg Castle is a ruin in Germany and landmark of Heidelberg. The castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps.
The castle has only been partially rebuilt since its demolition in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is located 80 metres (260 ft) up the northern part of the Königstuhl hillside, and thereby dominates the view of the old downtown.
The earliest castle structure was built before 1214 and later expanded into two castles circa 1294; however, in 1537, a lightning bolt destroyed the upper castle. The present structures had been expanded by 1650, before damage by later wars and fires. In 1764, another lightning bolt caused a fire which destroyed some rebuilt sections.

Mhm-mm-ooh, ah
Don't let them fool ya
Or even try to school ya
You have a mind of your own
So go to hell if what you're thinking is not right, oh
Oh, love would never leave us alone
Under the darkness, there must come out the light
Could you be loved and be love?
Could you be loved and be love? Yeah
Could you be?
Could you be? Could you be loved?
Could you be?
Could you be? Now, could you be?
Could you be loved? Yeah
Don't let them change ya
Or even rearrange ya
We have a life to live
They say, they say, they say, they say, they say
They say only, only, only, only the fittest of the fittest must survive
Stay alive, oh
Could you be loved and be love? Oh, now
Could you be loved and be love? Could you?
Could you be love and be loved? Ah
Could you be love, yeah, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved? Ooh
And be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved? Oh-oh
And be loved, and be loved
And be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved? Ah
And be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved, and be loved? Ooh
And be love, and be love
And be love, and be love
Could you be loved?
Could you be loved and be love? I choose love
I choose love, love
I choose love, love
Ooh, I choose love, love
I choose love
Could you be loved and be love?
Could you be loved and be love?
That could be a title of a nice country song. In Mui Ne, this was not advertising, it was simply sign and picture of a tree in a private residence. I just liked the light in the late afternoon.

When a sunrise sky pops up at the end of my garden it would be rude not to take a couple of shots.
No exotic location just a shot over gardens, I cloned out a rooftop and and some distant cables to make a more pleasing image.
On the same day as I shot this I went out to Worthing pier to shoot the sunset, I had been watching the clouds all day, so when 6 pm came around with sunset at 6.45 I headed out to shoot a cracking good sky. which I`ll show tomorrow. I
t`s been a long time since I shot both ends of the day .
I went out twice today, thinking I could get some nice shots of the cedar waxwings.. they are around.. but all I got is pissing rain... and very few birds interested in my photography :) the sun would shine for a little while and then it got so dark, I knew I was in trouble... I have a rain coat for my gear but it feels like my gear gained some weight over time, perhaps Christmas time, (who did not ) and the coat fits is a bit too tight ( battery grip will need to be removed for a better fit )... So glad this Great-tailed Grackle was waiting for me in my Arizona library..... I am not a very brave wildlife photographer.... I am always leery about laying down on the ground and thinking what or who is going to grip me from behind.. I am particularly not found of insects... but I could have never imagined a world like the one that exist before I started laying down on the ground for photography. That morning, I remember focusing on those beautiful Black-necked stilts on the left when I turned slightly to the right and noticed this bird... as keen as me on the morning hunt...with just a different interest than mine... this type of scene makes me happy that I conquer my fear... proud of the little wuss I am :)
If I could fly,
Up in the sky,
I'm sure I could catch those birds flying by.
Chance often does his bird watching from the upstairs windows and dreams of the chase.

If you could ask God one question, what would it be? it's what I saw on a sign, and the question stuck in my head. Of course I'm sure that lots of people ask God to explain things, and some will hear his answer. Me, I just kept on thinking about it. My question, "How do I get your job?"

It was turning into one of those indecisive mornings. “Shall we go and lounge by the pool and read until lunchtime, and then head down to the beach? Or will we get in the car and head off for the day?” Neither of us could make our minds up. It’s often like this, and until we close the front door, we could be heading anywhere between fifty yards away and the other end of the island. It’s part of what makes us so fascinating, and no doubt would drive anyone else unfortunate enough to end up in a long term relationship with either of us to the edge of their senses. All things considered, it’s a good job Ali and I found each other. Neither of us seems to mind when one asks the other what we’re going to do today, only to draw a distant gaze and a blank response.
If anything, I’m a little more driven than she is, and so I made the call. “Right, we’ll go back to that place in Femes for lunch, then we’ll go and visit one of the bodegas at La Geria, and after that I want to go and walk up the red mountain for sunset” – that’s Montana Colorada by the way. “Ok,” came the predictable response. And so we had a plan; a nice simple one that didn’t require too much thought or too much driving. We’d drive up the mountain pass from Playa Blanca to the village of Femes that sits on the saddle, and the rest of the day would follow as planned.
Except that it didn’t. 12:30 we agreed was a bit early for lunch, and so we drove in the other direction and headed for a menu del dia at the place we’d stumbled across in Teguise a few days earlier. And just to make things interesting, we decided to go along the main road rather than the wine route, just to have a bit of a test run for that inevitable drive to the airport just over a week later. “It’ll be faster” I reasoned. It wasn’t, especially after a couple of wrong turns, one of which almost had us heading into the jams of Arrecife, the island capital. Eventually, we arrived at a dinner table to be served by a very harassed looking waiter, whom it seemed was working solo through the busy lunch hour. As he unceremoniously thumped our drinks onto the table and feigned no interest whatsoever in our opposing views on the inclusion of tuna in our ensaladas mixtas, we wondered who’d thrown a sickie and left him in the lurch. After the meal I was too frightened to ask for coffee as well, and spent the next twenty-five minutes looking for another establishment to replenish the caffeine deficit. The first such attempt found us hastily evacuating our seats, scarpering around a corner and tracing an elaborate circuit of the town after Ali had seen the price list. Six euros for a scoop of ice cream? Not on your Nellie!
Some time later, happily refuelled with coffee and ice cream we sat at a bench in the church square. By now it was some time after 4pm, and with less than two hours until sunset we considered the options. At the far end of the island, just another twelve miles or so away lay the Mirador del Rio, offering a classic view of the three small islands that fan away from the northeast corner of Lanzarote, while retracing our tyre treads down to the coast would bring us to the wreck of the Telamon, a long exposure magnet that lies a few yards out to see between Costa Teguise and Arrecife. Tentatively, we set course for the former, where the road rides up to its highest point on the island between Los Valles and Haria. And still several miles short of our target, as we sat at a layby gazing down at the white coastal villages of Punta Mujeres and Arrieta far below, we changed our minds again – and then furthered the endless mystery of our final destination by missing the turn without signpost that was supposed to take us to the Mirador del Risco de Famara.
As you can see, the error turned into what Bob Ross would call a happy accident. Finally, somewhere around five, we ended up here, at the lonely and altitudinous Ermita de las Nieves. Quite how often there’s ever been snow here, even at this distance above sea level I’m not sure, although I did need to put my long sleeved top on over my tee shirt to brave the last hour of daylight on this late November afternoon, as a fellow visitor from France told me his wife was very jealous of my telephoto lens. The view across the volcanoes that dominate the landscape over to the west from where we’d come was, well you can see for yourself can’t you? Even before the golden hour, it seemed evident that we were going to be in for a show, as layers of cloud allowed sunbeams to filter through and light up the spaces in between the distant cones. For an hour I watched from behind the long lens transfixed, as the colours deepened and the sunbeams bounced and weaved their way into ever more epic frames. As the sunbeams moved, I continually followed the drama, recomposing and focussing as quickly as I could keep up. It’s not often that I get to spend time in a landscape like this, and certainly I’d never seen a sunset sky such as the one we were witnessing now in the mountains. Eventually, the sun having disappeared for the day and the magic leaving centre stage almost instantaneously, I headed back to the car with an enormous grin on my face. The day of sliding door decisions had given us the best possible outcome with a sunset we’d never forget. It’s a good job we’re not that great at making our minds up, or we’d have probably missed it.
If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I'd take back those words that have hurt you
And you'd stay
I don't know why I did the things I did
I don't know why I said the things I said
Pride's like a knife, it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes
well, I could keep it above
but then it wouldn't be sky anymore
so if I send it to you,
you've got to promise to keep it whole
buy the sky
and sell the sky
and lift your arms up to the sky
and ask the sky and ask the sky ...
