Cooper's Hawk
(Astur cooperii)
Life is tricky for male Cooper’s Hawks. As in most hawks, males are significantly smaller than their mates. The danger is that female Cooper’s Hawks specialize in eating medium-sized birds. Males tend to be submissive to females and to listen out for reassuring call notes the females make when they’re willing to be approached. Males build the nest, then provide nearly all the food to females and young over the next 90 days before the young fledge (allaboutbirds.org)
I was cooking some breakfast for dinner tonight and had a sausage patty in the pan. I got caught up with the eggs and next thing I know, I've got slightly smoking sausage. Our smoke detector is super sensitive, so in an effort to avoid setting it off, I went to open the patio door to get some ventilation going. I see the silhouette of a bird on our fence, which isn't rare considering I have a bunch of feeders out there. It actually took a second for me to realize the silhouette was about 8 times bigger than the usual House Sparrow's. I did a double take and realized I was staring down a Cooper's Hawk. I slowly backed away from the window and ran like a madman to get my camera, which was all the way in our bedroom. I kept saying to myself "Please still be there, please still be there" the whole time I was getting my camera ready.
I went back to our patio door and shot through our dirty screen door before I decided to get brave and open it for a clearer view. The hawk stayed. I got a few shots off before my cat spied the open door and nonchalantly sauntered outside. The hawk still stayed in place, splitting his time between watching me, the camera, and the cat. I shot off about 35-40 frames before the cat got too close and he flew off. I closed the door and went back to my nearly-on-fire-by-now sausage. I got it off the pan and went back to open the patio door to let all the smoke out. As I open the door, I see a flash fly off in front of the fence. He had come back almost immediately after I left the first time, this time to my neighbor's patio.
Hopefully I'll see more of him in the near future. I can only assume he's preying on our Sparrows and House Finches.

The Cooper Foundation in partnership with the Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation and the Ravitz Family Foundation celebrated the opening of the newly created Teen Lounge at Children's Regional Hospital at Cooper.
Cooper is a 9 week old lab (therapy dog in training) that came to visit our office today. Such cuteness!
Cooper's hawk is a medium-sized hawk native to the North American continent and found from southern Canada to Mexico. This species was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter.
Graduates of the Cooper Union School of Art include Seymor Chwast, Lou Dorfsman, Milton Glaser, and Herb Lubalin.

1). ROMA - Virginia Raggi, "La cultura dei Musei di Roma, un esempio per tanti." Il Messaggero (25/08/2021): 22.
È fondamentale portare al centro del dibattito la cultura, il ruolo dei musei e l’importanza di valorizzare il grande patrimonio artistico, culturale e archeologico di Roma, ma bisogna farlo con cognizione di causa. In questi giorni il candidato a sindaco di Azione ha proposto la creazione di un Museo Unico. Un’idea che non si basa su analisi ragionate, né su valutazioni scientifiche. È solo campagna elettorale. Ben venga mettere i Capitolini al centro del dibattito, ma parliamo di un museo vivo e frequentato, al centro di ricerche scientifiche, dove i reperti, le opere, i beni non sono affastellati, ma esposti e valorizzati. Voglio ricordare che dopo oltre 50 anni abbiamo riaperto il nuovo spazio espositivo di Villa Caffarelli ai Musei Capitolini che abbiamo inaugurato con la mostra “I marmi Torlonia. Collezionare capolavori”, considerata una delle esposizioni più importanti del mondo. Una proposta d’eccellenza culturale. Inoltre, da qualche mese, nell’Esedra del Marco Aurelio si può ammirare la mano del colosso bronzeo di Costantino ricomposta con il frammento del dito in bronzo proveniente dal Museo del Louvre.
Forse a Carlo Calenda sfugge, ma a Roma esiste già il Museo della Civiltà Romana: un museo che racconta la storia della città antica e per il quale ho lavorato chiedendo lo stanziamento di 18 milioni di euro all’interno del Pnrr. Lo restituiremo a cittadini e turisti. Reputo che sia necessario informarsi su cosa è stato fatto dalla nostra Amministrazione per poi proporre una diversa visione di politica culturale. In questi cinque anni abbiamo lavorato per rendere la cultura più accessibile, dal centro alle periferie. Ricordo che abbiamo riaperto al pubblico il Mausoleo di Augusto, il più grande sepolcro circolare dell’antichità, oltre a spazi culturali come il Nuovo Cinema Aquila e, dopo 15 anni, l’Arena del Teatro di Tor Bella Monaca. Poi le biblioteche Giovenale, Raffaello, Laurentina, il centro culturale Elsa Morante. Abbiamo reso il Macro ad ingresso gratuito tutto l’anno, abbiamo riaperto lo spazio di Santa Rita e 12 artisti vincitori di un bando esporranno fino a dicembre le loro opere site specific di arte contemporanea.

Con il Ministero della Cultura nel luglio del 2019 abbiamo unificato i Fori, con una fase di sperimentazione durata 6 mesi, per la prima volta nella storia, abbattendo la barriera immaginaria fra Stato e Comune. Inoltre ho proposto di unificare in un unico ente co-partecipato le soprintendenze nella nostra città per facilitare le procedure e rendere gli interventi di restauro più veloci. Abbiamo creato la prima card – la Mic – che consente ai residenti a Roma e nella Città Metropolitana ad un costo di soli 5 euro, di accedere per 12 mesi ai nostri meravigliosi Musei Civici. Un’iniziativa che sarebbe interessante ampliare anche ai Musei Statali.
Poi c’è Roma Pass, il biglietto unico che stiamo ripristinando e implementando grazie al lavoro di Sovrintendenza e Zètema. Con “Roma Pass” in versione digitale, infatti, si potrà entrare in tutti i musei, Civici e Statali, si potranno usare i mezzi del trasporto pubblico, e nella nuova versione si sta lavorando per inserire anche altre esperienze culturali, come spettacoli teatrali e concerti e per metterla in rete con altre città d’Italia.
È importante continuare a lavorare seguendo la visione di un patrimonio culturale che sia sempre più accessibile, per fare in modo che cittadini e turisti possano visitare e scoprire le meraviglie che solo Roma può vantare di avere. Il fatto che a novembre scorso 45 sindaci di città in tutto il mondo, come Città del Messico e Barcellona, abbiano preso ad esempio le politiche culturali di Roma firmando un protocollo che prende il nome della nostra città – la Carta di Roma 2020 – è il segno che le politiche culturali messe in campo in questi anni sono vincenti.

Tribute to my dear artist friend
BARBARA COOPER
My favorite artist, and dearest friend, BARBARA COOPER, ended her suffering back in 2007.
BC was a wonderful artist. I collected many of her works and have quite a few of her paintings in my apartments. It always seems that she is right there with me for I see her in her paintings.
BC is the person who gave me the cool FRENCH-ENGLISH dictionary with the hidden story inside. Somehow her guides, knew that of all her friends, it would be ADDA who would find that incredible story. I will always be grateful for that tremendously generous gift.
Adda was one of the first collectors of her incredible paintings, as well, as an advisor to her first venture into selling her paintings. (Ask more MONEY, was my advice! hahaha)
I was able to connect her with the folks at VISUAL AID who welcomed her in their arms. They provided her with vouchers for art supplies and wonderful heartfelt support.
BC was collected by many people in the BAY AREA. She won several awards and was featured in several art shows in Marin.
Every year BC contributed some of her art works to benefit VISUAL AID and other organizations.
She was deeply loved and appreciated by her friends and her art loving admirers.
my friend STEVIE passed away last week, (MAY 2013) and his sister has distributed some of his items. STEVIE also loved BC a lot and he had a huge collection of BC (Barbara Cooper) paintings. Most of the BC paintings went to me, which opened a flood of tears...remembrance of two friends who are no doubt parting and painting on another level....
Miss you my dear artist pal BC and I miss my cherished friend STEVIE...

Cooper Creek is part of an inland drainage system that empties flood waters from the top half of Australia into Lake Eyre. During dry seasons it is just a series of lagoons and clay pans but in wet seasons can cover vast areas of land. At Windorah it can be as wide as forty kilometers during flood. The fellow with the houseboat lives in hope.
Two Cooper Bristol sharing a trailer in the paddock at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Donington Park in May 2001. No racing numbers visible, but it looks like the car of Michael Parr on top and that of Bob Gilbert underneath. Both are the Cooper Bristol T23, or MkII, model and have the 6-cylinder inline 1,971cc engine derived from the pre-war BMW 328 unit. The cars were numbered 19 and 44 respectively in the Ron Flockhart Memorial Trophy race at this meeting.
