Kitchen- refaced cabinets, new hardware, new countertops, new floor, new dishwasher, oven, and cooktop, done little by little 2009-2012.
Gas stove dying. Oven gone to gas heaven months ago. Mum to the rescue! A new induction range with convection bake + eggs expiring inspired my first cook and bake. Basmati rice in 15 minutes, 15 only because I screwed up the first 10. Next time, I’m sure it’ll be 10, induction cooking is so quick! Most amazing of all: it was like I’d cooked it in the oven and no burning at the bottom!! Fluffy, perfectly tender white rice. Whoa.
The soufflé omelette was fluffy. The cast iron pan - only pan that I have that worked on the induction cooktop - was like weightlifting class. But the omelette cooked well, the Parmesan cheese on top broiling to crispy, golden perfection in 30 seconds. My old broiler took minutes. This one so quick, I almost had a heart attack I was gonna burn it!
You won't want to leave home and miss this view! This home sits on one of the most prime lots in Gaillardia. This is a beautiful traditional home. The entry features a dramatic curved staircase and large dining room with soaring ceilings. The living room has a full wall of windows overlooking the back porch and its' water and golf course views. With only one wall cabinet in the entire kitchen, all of the dish and food storage was in a pantry located between the refrigerator and oven cabinet. There was no landing space for the pantry, refrigerator, oven or microwave.
Our clients’ primary goal was to cook on a commercial style range without a hood obstructing the view to the family room. It is important to be able to chat with family and friends while cooking. A downdraft vent would not be adequate with the very high BTU range, thus we installed a ceiling mounted exhaust fan which includes LED lighting. This is mounted in a soffit constructed to allow space for the ducting, shorten the distance from the range to the exhaust and complement the style of the kitchen. The bottom of the soffit was painted to match the cabinetry. A powerful remote blower was installed outside, making the vent very quiet in the kitchen.
The large island has ample storage for dishes and cookware. The back of the island offers additional storage for cookbooks and less frequently used items. Pendant lights were installed to illuminate the portion of the island not under the exhaust. There is recessed lighting in the balance of the kitchen and eating area.
Two tall cabinets (one with a micro-convection oven) replace the storage in the former pantry. The cabinets and counter in the area formerly occupied by the pantry allow more eye level storage and display space. The counter is also used for landing for the refrigerator and micro-convection. A shallow spice cabinet disguises a mechanical chase adjacent to the refrigerator. An under cabinet light fixture highlights the custom backsplash tile.
The window was replaced with an awning model to allow an unobstructed view to the yard. The new sink was centered under the window.
The existing hardwood floor was patched and refinished.

More playing around with reflections on the cooktop. This time, the results are much more what I was looking for! I am quite pleased with this one, if I do say so myself.
The light is actually just the cooktop's hood light, though I love the way it looks as though there is a lit candle in the bowl.

Professionals by day, chefs by night, these homeowners consider entertaining to be the center of their active lifestyle.
This kitchen in their upscale Buffalo suburb home was a collaboration between the homeowners and designers Kathy Fedak and Keith Specht. Together, they created a high-end modern room with top-notch materials and a variety of textures.
The homeowners stripped down the dining room as well as the kitchen and combined the spaces to create multiple
working zones: prep area, cooking area with five-burner cooktop and double oven, cleaning zone with oversized sink and two dishwashers, entertainment area, and storage.
A custom floor-to-ceiling 13-foot pantry wall offers plenty of storage and accommodates the homeowners’ growing cookbook collection. A pantry with retractable doors houses all the small appliances.
One of the two islands includes a prep sink and storage for immediate necessities. The other is used for entertaining and houses a refrigerator, wine cooler, and icemaker. A stainless steel column supports a granite slab surrounded by leather barstools. An
indoor grill in the dining room, adjacent to the kitchen, allows for inside meal-making with an outdoor twist. A perfect spot for morning coffee is nestled in the bay window. I knew this was going to be a tough image to capture, but I knew this was what I wanted to try as soon as I read that today's topic at PhotoChallenge.org was Fire.
Inspired by Brad's furnace image, but wanted to go a slightly different direction rather than just copying his shot.
This is a 5-exposure HDR, multiple Qtpfsgui outputs (layering in GIMP). HDR is not particularly kind to flame images, but I think I managed to get it pretty close to what I envisioned.
The stove is not really that grungy -- that's just the Qtpfsgui Mantiuk mode at work.
